Duke Lax Program In Question
Submitted by walax on Tue, 2006-03-28 17:56.
With the trouble at Duke and the suspension of the team what will that do to their team. A greater question would also be to ask what this incident will do to lacrosse as a whole. What image will this create of lacrosse players in general?
DNA Tests
I found it interesting how many people simply accused all the players, and reserved no judgement at all, and now the DNA tests return with no matches to any of the team members. I'm not saying this says they are all innocent, however the DNA tests, and some other evidence of pictures and such (you'll have to read the articles from insidelax.com) show that most of the players might have actually been telling the truth the whole time, and not protecting rapists on their team, as there might not have been any. Interesting thoughts.
DNA Tests Back
And they were negative so I guess the story continues.
withhold judgment
Most level headed folks will be able to see the difference between the accusations facing one Duke mens team, and the rest of the sport.
Encourage people to withhold judgment, let all the evidence come in. There is a lot of legal posturing going on, the attorneys on both sides are leaking information to the media that benefits their own side of the case.
Wreckless
Sadly, what seems to be taking over other sports -- the lack of good judgement -- has trickled into lacrosse. This will hurt the sport, but also Duke University, the coaches, players and fans. Fortunately, in my experience, lacrosse players are a different breed and rise above this sort of irresponsibility. As I have watched many lacrosse games in our state, I am pleased with the respect and dignity that accompanies this sport. Hopefully, we'll all learn something from this unfortunate circumstance without much impact on those who live by higher standards of decency.
Just sad...
Lax fans are getting what they wanted, but not in the way they hoped: National headlines about lacrosse, and it's not NCAA tournament week.
I think this hurts the sport tremendously. For those who aren't familiar with lacrosse (many potential lax parents), this creates a horrible first impression about our game and the type of people who play it. For many others, it reinforces a stereotype.
I'm ashamed for Duke lacrosse. I understand supporting your teammates, but going as far as to protect rapists is shameful. It seems obvious that some team members have information about what happened, and they're not fessing up. If they did, their season might be salvagable. As it is, they deserve what they get.
Just sad...
I Agree
this is not the publicity the sport needs but more than that Duke need to get their house in order. Having an entire team refuse to talk to the police about the evening and basically cover up for whoever did this is nothing short of disgusting. I think in one easy move the team has destroyed one of the powerhouses of lacrosse, thats very sad.
5th Amendment
Why so anxious to waive other people's constitutional rights? They are presumed innocent until proven guilty. What if it was your kid? No charges have been filed against anyone, and any worthwhile defense attorney will tell someone under suspicion not to speak to police and protect their 5th Amendment rights.
People have been railroaded by the press and the police before, false confessions have been elicted under extreme stress, and words have been twisted beyond recognition. Ever heard of Richard Jewel?
We all know things said in one context can be misconstrued. The leaked email that came out was part of an email exchange directly quoting "American Psycho". But that context was not reported until a day later when a school friend of the email author pointed it out. All this is why any defense attorney worth his / her salt will advise clients not to make statements if they don't have to.
The players are getting good legal advice and following it. Just because they play lacrosse for Duke University does not mean they waive their 5th Amendment rights.
