Garfield Downs MI 7-5 Recap

Features

Tonight, we will see the match up of a Mercer Island team fresh off of a successful road trip, and Garfield off the game of year short-handed.  Has MI finally gelled?  Will Garfield open the offensive cannons early?

Seattle Prep vs. Issaquah Game Recap

Features

Just thirty seconds into the game, and Prep is on the board with a Shane Oneill shot top center. The lefty fired one top center on Johnson and the score is 1-0 Prep.  Mikey Travers returns to keeper for the Panthers and settles into a groove as the Eagles turn the ball over on passing to give Prep another opportunity that they can't capitalize on.

DIVISION I
Parity seems to be the story this week. Prep dropped one to Vashon who came to play, at home on Monday missing O’Neill in their line-up. Curtis was missing three starters in their loss to Issaquah, and Bellevue picked up a strong win over Prep at Prep’s house. Bellevue has a tough week ahead of them, as does Prep with Bellevue playing Issaquah and Bainbridge this week. Also, Garfield plays Mercer who will be coming back from a road trip to Norht Carolina and Garfield coming off of the best game to watch of the year in their overtime defeat of Issaquah. The top spots may change possession a few more times, the parity this year is very satisfying. Was Bainbridge over Garfield a fluke? Was Bellevue over Issaquah a fluke? I see the 6-8th spots as completely up in the air, but look for the mid-season evaluation of playoff contention next week. If you get an opportunity to watch the video of Issaquah vs. Garfield, it was incredible. Hats off to both teams!

Bainbridge Island BI is officially 6-0 and hitting their stride. Defeating Maple Valley, BI has a host of weapons in the shed right now with a gelling offense and a solid defense. The Gilbreath brothers and Weisner have been playing very well to support Masi, Delius, Colegrove, Knight and others. BI is uncontested at this point, but will have an interesting game against Bellevue on Tuesday.

Garfield  Playing a short game against a beat up Haile squad in their 12-2 win of just three quarters, Garfield went into the Issaquah game with just four subs on the bench. Garfield’s keeper Montoya is playing very strong as are Snider, Hoffman, and Rohrbach. Attackman Jason Travis broke the drought this week, but will have to begin producing in order for Garfield to keep developing.

Issaquah   Takes their first OT loss in their game against Garfield. Defeating Curtis two days before minus three of Curtis’s starters led them into Friday. Defensively, Gerrard has been playing terrifically as has Smith and Johnson. More production from Wright and Yaap now that he is back will help Campi shoulder his leadership role as will continued Kale support from the brothers. Issaquah is a run and gun team, and will need to keep relying on the youth to help peak in mid-season. Issaquah is explosive, and will be a play for the championship if they can keep MI down.

Seattle Prep Vashon beat Prep last week without a full strength O’Neill and fire in their bellies.Prep has a tough week facing Bainbridge and Issaquah back-to-back. If Prep leaves Thramer in cage (assuming no Travers) and allows their defense to gel, we may have games both ways. The Prep offense has been generating with and without O’Neill, but his return will be essential for success in these two big games. One nice surprise has been Sam Bernoski, who has been producing for Prep. A well-rounded offense in addition to settling defense and goalie situations will be key to begin a mid-season settled run.

Bellevue  Defeating lakeside on Friday, Bellevue plays two games on Saturday in Oregon. Tuesday will be a true test against the undefeated Spartans though it is Spring Break. If Bellevue can get offensive output and possession time minus their line of d-mids, Spangler may be able to lead his offense against Weisner and company at home. Defensively, Bellevue has been playing solid ball, and will have to keep the ball out of Delius and Masi’s hands to keep the game in check.

Curtis Goes into their spring break week with an easy win over the Roughriders and developing a well-balanced offense. At times the Yerglers, Hodge, and Grimstead ball movement is tremendous, their defense is young but improving. Dropping their game to Issaquah came after not playing three starters. Curtis is showing they have what it takes to make the playoffs already, we will have to see what happens at Bellevue next week.

Vashon  In solid form against Prep last week, Vashon’s new formula seems to be working. I think Coach DuPuis said it best stating Vashon is on a mission. Friday’s test against Garfield will pair potent offenses up. Vashon has led ground balls in the last three games and possession time. Led by Craighead and Serko, Kimbrough and McMurdo continue improving as does Wilks who is just getting back into the fold. Vashon continues to impress as the freshman class in Division I.

Mercer Island  Mercer had an easy week with a game against Lakeside, their out-of-state trip will hopefully get the Islanders into a groove they have been looking for thus far. Beating Charlotte Latin was a good start, the Islanders also defeated Providence Day on Monday, a team that is 10-0. Mercer has the week to prepare for Garfield on Friday, another great game to define MI.

Lakeside Dropped a nail-biter to Maple Valley Last Saturday, and then a pair of tough games against Mercer and Bellevue. The Lions have to unseat Prep as number two to make the playoffs and will continue to count on Copenhaver, the Holmes brothers and Rothblatt for production. The Lakeside defense continues to improve, this is a rebuilding year for a young team with a bright future.

Maple Valley  Buckman, Butt, Tooley and Johnson helped lift the Vandals over Lakeside in a great game. Maple Valley then faced two tough games in BI and MI. Both islands came away with wins, but Maple Valley has potential. The Vandals have their work cut out for them on Wednesday against Garfield, pitting a developing attack against a developing attack. If Maple Valley will have their work cut out for them, and will play Eastside. The Vandals still have time to get out of the Sound doghouse, but are members of the developing second best conference behind teams who are firing on all cylinders right now.

Eastside The Mountain-bourne Ravens have two games against the Sound conference bottom in Vashon and Maple Valley. Eastside has relied on Bearson all season, and he will need continued help from Liias and Finkenstadt to win games on points alone. The Ravens defense led by Sophomore net minder John Olin will have to have big games this week, but may be able to battle for wins.

Roughriders Truitt played a gritty game in their loss to Curtis. Roosevelt will have to get perspective on their goals for the season. Their season success will be determined by what Pawluskiewicz, Shaul and Hennings bring to help Grose, and the defensive effort exerted by Wheeler and company.

Nathan Hale Springer, Benitez and Shiplett lead the listless Hale Raiders looking for leadership and wins this week. Hale will travel to Issaquah to take on the Eagles before another game against Curtis. Hale is winless, but not hopeless- Defense is key and solid focus from team leaders and coaches can break the drought.

DIVISION I
The Division I Lacrosse world has already been turned on its head, this week a whole new twist! Mercer loses to Vashon in a startling turn of events, and Garfield is beaten by Bainbridge in an unbeaten battle Royale. Prep continues to move up, Issaquah continues rolling along and no one knows who really is the team to beat. Any of the top eight teams may throw an upset at any given moment.

Bainbridge Island Finishing their fourth game last Wednesday against a very strong Garfield, Bainbridge maintains their 4-0 status atop the Sound conference by stifling both Hoffman and Snider in a 9-4 route of Garfield. Bainbridge has beaten both MI and Garfield, but will need to go through Issaquah keep their number one rank. Wiesner continues to lead the defense, doing a great job against Garfield, team leader Masi and Delius continue solid numbers while a number of other middies shoulder the rest of the load. Look for Bainbridge to continue to improve on a good formula.

Garfield After a difficult loss to MI, Garfield slips to the number two position. With offensive scoring threats at midfield in Snider who has come on in the last two weeks, and Hoffman, Garfield has to find a way to use their attackmen more effectively. Sophomore Rohrbach is the anchor, but Garfield will need a completely balanced offense if they don’t want their two weapons locked out of the scoring party. Garfield has an easy week, until Friday that is, when they face Issaquah.

Issaquah Issaquah beat up on former Division II teammates in Skyline and continues to improve with the help of some young talent. Yaap returns to the lineup as a finishing attackamn to add some balance to Campi, and Travis Wright continues to put up numbers in go to situations. Issaquah has a solid defense in Gerrard and Smith, a solid keeper in Johnson, but the interesting part is the youth in the offense. Wright and Yaap are Sophomores; Goodman, Goldstein, and Director are all freshmen. Both Frye brothers provide some leadership, but Issaquah is young AND playing well. Friday will be a great game to watch against Garfield at Issaquah.

Seattle Prep Shane O’Neill at longstick last week against Mercer Island. Something to see, in a solid game against Mercer. With their inexperienced goalie, which seems to be a running theme this year, Prep puts promise in their triple threat: AP, AB and Shane-O. Prep will have to do more than blow hot and cold with a good offense to work against the top 8 consistently. The prep defense stifled MI with a zone, so it should be good to see the Vashon match-up on Monday. Prep also needs continued performance from Spano, Voeller, Corr and Ritchie to keep their offense balanced and threatening.

Bellevue  Garfield came out to play against Bellevue, and Bellevue didn’t have the answer for the Bulldogs. Although Bellevue has a solid defense captained by Platt and Schmidt, the young offense has to continue putting points up on the board. This week, a number of players outside the top three, added to the offensive threat. Spangler, Crollard, and Larrivee will have to do continue offensive output and add some of the new blood in the mix.

Curtis Losing a great game against Prep this week only showed that Curtis is in it to win it. Both Maple Valley and Prep were one goal games, and the Issaquah game should prove to be a spirited match if Curtis remains healthy this week. At 4-2, Curtis has beaten the other two teams in conference, except BI- so continued solid performance will help them tie up second in the conference and a playoff spot. Issaquah will be a good game on Tuesday, and their last game until 4/20 will pit a Roosevelt squad against Curtis.

Vashon  Looks to have weathered their spell against Bellevue. Missing a couple of starters in that game, Vashon came out with a twist in their team moving Serko to Attack from Midfield and Garbedian to goalie from attack and beat Mercer Island at home.    This was a monumental victory for them, and also shows how much a little tweak in the program can alter the results. Look for a hard game against Prep, that will tie up the Sound conference’s second spot with a win. Vashon has a veteran Midfield backed up by solid poles- if they continue to improve and click, they will be playoff bound in their rookie DI season. Look for more output from Craighead, Kimbrough, and Wilks- Serko will surely be pumping more in.

Mercer Island What a week for the Islanders. A disappointing loss to Vashon, followed by a big win over Seattle Prep at home. Mercer Island has stumbled early in the season here, and they are finding their motivation. Defensively, Howell and Brazg are doing great work against the better attackmen, MI needs more possession time and offensive momentum. Last week showed what happens when the Mahony brothers get their shots. Back in the line-up is A.J Ellis, combined with Dawson and Frankel, the young attack is finding their way to success.

Lakeside A tough loss for Lakeside against Issaquah, the young team is putting everything in Copenhaver and their two young guns Rothblatt and Holmes. Older Brother Ian has got to find a way to get a defense on track to lessen shots on goal. Lakeside plays MI this week at home.

Maple Valley The Vandals got into a little funk this week in a loss to Prep followed by a one-goal loss Saturday to Lakeside. The vandals have two tough ones this week against Mercer and Bainbridge. Martin, Buckman, Butt and Martin continue lead Maple Valley in what was a strong showing this week, but settled offense will have to get tuned up for more assault on the Sound. MV needs wins against Curtis and Vashon to progress.

Eastside Eastside had a huge win over Hale this week in their first win of the season. Dropping their next game against Curtis finds them about in the same spot this week. Young attack and defense are trying to put the pieces together to help Greg Bearson and keeper John Olin. Liias and Finkenstadt must do more if the Ravens want to produce this year.

Roughriders Roosevelt is battling out of the basement with one win to date, but will be facing an equal rival in Eastside this week. Grose has 80% of the team’s offensive production, Hennings and Shaul will have to up the output a little to overcome Curtis and Eastside this week.

Nathan Hale Nathan Hale is a team looking for leadership. Springer continues to put points up without much help from a supporting cast. Both Vashon and Garfield got to the Raider home this week, Hale will have to find a way to possess the ball and control the tempo to pick up wins before break.

MICHAEL SERKO, SR, Attack, VASHON…Serko lit it up scoring six against MI in his first start at Attack. The combination of stick skills and release made a difference and propelled Vashon to a 10-9 victory over Mercer Island.

NICK YAAP, SO, Attack, ISSAQUAH…Bjorkman has been an underestimated attackman his high school career, but this year he has come out. He leads Prep in Scoring and total points. AB has a hat trick in each of Prep’s three games this week.

ALEX GARABEDIAN, JR, Goalie, VASHON…Congratulations for becoming a starting goalie facing two of the hardest shots in the division. Alex registered 13 saves on 22 shots to vault Vashon to a win and propel them with leadership and intensity that may have been missing motivation before.
