The Tacoma Tigers showed their might for the second year in a row, paving a clear path to the Varsity B championship game. This time, however, they sealed their victory beyond a doubt with an 18-10 beating over Lakeside.
To Lakeside’s credit, the score is not reflective of the entire game. The game opened up with a Lakeside drive to goal, but an offsides call put the ball in Tacoma’s hand. Lakeside made another intense fast break drive six minutes in with a beautiful pass from sophomore attack Sadie Mackay to sophomore attack Molly Levine but they were unable to complete the play. Tacoma’s Caitlin White, a junior midfielder, answered the drive back but Lakeside’s goalie, sophomore Sarah Adler, made the save. Lakeside drove back at Tacoma, but Tacoma’s goalie, sophomore Megan Woodard, blocked the shot. Tacoma finally scored the first goal of the game, which was quickly answered by Lakeside’s Sadie Mackay on a crease roll in the eighth minute. Tacoma junior attack Anna Callaghan returned the ball to the other end of the field on a fast break a minute later. After a few fast breaks back and forth and a free position shot taken by Tacoma midfielder Rachel Bellamy that was saved by Adler, Sadie Mackay responded with another Tacoma goal on a crease roll, tying the game at 2-2. Soon after, Tacoma defender Alia Malo found her way onto attack, worked to find a hole, and put Tacoma in the lead again at 3-2. Ten seconds later, Lakeside answered back as Lauren Blake-Whitney scored on a fast break off the draw. Only a minute later Anna Callaghan netted another goal for Tacoma, followed by a goal two minutes later by Blair Callaghan off an assist from Alia Malo, putting Tacoma up by two. Lakeside kept pushing on attack, but Tacoma kept stopping them until Lakeside’s Sarah Pollnow responded a few minutes later with a crease roll shot. Tacoma was not having any of it and, after being held off for three minutes, they answered back with two quick goals; one by Anna Callaghan, who followed up her free position shot to get the ball in the cage, and senior attack Ali Jensen, off an assist by Caitlin White, giving Tacoma a 7-4 lead. Two minutes later Lakeside’s sophomore attack Molly Levine worked the defense in front of the cage and scored to put Lakeside one closer. Tacoma patiently worked the ball on attack and waited for an opportunity that Anna Callaghan found to score her fourth goal of the game. With less than two minutes to go, Lakeside’s Sadie Mackay smashed in another goal, but Tacoma was not done as Rachel Bellamy made sure to put in one more goal before half. Lakeside was on a fast break run for goal when the half time whistle blew keeping the half-time score 9-6, Tacoma.
Not wanting a repeat of last years one point loss in the Championship game, Tacoma came out with four unanswered goals in the beginning of the second half. The first goal was a goal by midfielder Caitlin White off an assist by Anna Callaghan five minutes in, followed up by a goal by Alia Malo thirty seconds later. Shortly thereafter Caitlin White fed to Blair Callaghan and then Blair Callaghan netted one more to finish Tacoma’s four goal run. Lakeside finally answered back with a goal by Molly Levine followed within seconds with another goal by Emmy Armintrout. Their streak ended there as Anna Callaghan netted her fifth goal of the game, putting the score at 14-8. Lakeside continued to battle as Charlotte Fiskin smashed in a goal with eight minutes remaining and Molly Levine netted her third and Lakeside’s final goal of the game with five minutes remaining. Tacoma sealed their victory with a final four goal scoring streak, as Ali Jensen scored on a rebound off of a save, Anna Holcomb netted one, Anna Callaghan put in a goal off of a free position shot and Caitlin White finished off the scoring on a fast break with less than two minutes to go. Tacoma ended the game exactly how they came into it… with a clear desire to take the lead and keep the lead with enough room to avenge their 2006 loss.
