SANDY, UTAH – The Utah Lacrosse Association is holding its first annual meeting for coaches, officials and parent team administrators at Westminster College Nov. 10th and 11th. The convention represents a new milestone for one of the fastest growing sports in the state.
A keynote address on Nov. 11th by Tina Syer, Associate Director of Positive Coaching Alliance (PCA), a nonprofit based in Northern California, will highlight the meeting’s educational schedule. PCA’s mission is to transform the culture of youth sports so that every youth athlete can have a positive, character-building experience. Ms. Syer will also conduct several classes for coaches and officials to promote sportsmanship, learn new technical skills, and develop an “Honor the Game” attitude in all participants.
Other presenters include Bryan Perry, a longtime proponent of the game in Colorado and head coach of boy’s state champion Cherry Creek High School. On the men’s officials side, Anton Schulzki, senior official and college assignor for the Rocky Mountain region, will lead classes on officiating.
Soni Taylor Bartlett, coach of the three-time Utah girl’s high school state champion Jordan Beetdiggers, will conduct some of the girl’s coaching sessions. Joining her will be Crista Samaras, a former standout at Princeton University and US Team member, and Kate Soulier, a High School All-American, two-time captain at Duke University, and Third Team College All-American.
“Building the skills of our boy’s and girl’s coaches, officials and volunteers is a strategic goal of the Utah Lacrosse Association,” said Paul Larkin, ULA Executive Director. “We have great experts to conduct more than a dozen classes to help our constituents become more effective in all aspects of the game. Having PCA here to help us build a culture of sportsmanship is a particularly exciting element of the meeting.”
Classes include:
Level 1 coaching clinic conducted by US Lacrosse clinicians
Starting and growing a new lacrosse program
“Taking it to the next level” skills overview for officials
Open forum best practice sessions for coaches, refs and parent representatives
On-field clinic for coaches
Lacrosse rules overview for parents
Cost of the one-day general meeting on Nov. 11th is $30. Cost for the Friday evening/Saturday Level 1 coaching clinic is $65. Registration information can be found at www.utahlax.org. All sessions will take place at the campus of Utah’s newest men’s college program - Westminster College, 1840 South 1300 East, Salt Lake City.
