June 24th – June 26th 2006
Day 1: June 24th
Game one
The first game of the tournament was against Team Texas. They had a good reputation and it was known it was going to be a tough game. Rainz had not yet played a real game with all the girls who were at the tournament but did their best to play together as a team. Rainz also had the loss of one of their best defenders, due to sickness. Texas started out the game hard, with a goal and elevated from there. Rainz fought back as best they could but could not close the gap of the score. Rainz goalie, Lisa Schomaker (Lakeside), played a hard game, but held in with more than 8 saves. The goals for the Rainz were contributed by Frannie Hemmelgarn, Lauren Murray, Beckie Oesterle, and Anna Timberlake. Gracie Binder and Madeline Grose both had one assist. The Rainz had a total of 7 caused turnovers. The Rainz played the game until the last second and played together. Having this be the first game of the whole team as one, there was room for improvement and as the next games show, they closed that room and made the improvements. Texas 10 - Rainz 6.
Game two
After the first game the team knew what they had to do in order to better their play, and play as a unit, not as a one-woman game. The team was feeling the disappointment of a loss and wanted to gain a good reputation and played a great game against the Colorado Futures. The Rainz started the game with intensity and really started to get a feel for how each teammate played. They learned each others strengths and weaknesses and used them to the team’s advantage. Binder and Murray each played a great game with one assist and three goals. Grose and Hemmelgarn each had one assist and one goal. Tiffany Louie, Frannie Hemmelgarn and Annabelle Dessert played a good defensive game each with two caused turn overs. Jennifer Courtney, Sarye Creighton, and Madeline Simon each had one caused turn over. Louie also had three draw controls. Binder, Murray, and Kati Fithian had 2 groundballs each. Simon and Timberlake each had one. Schomaker again played a good game and evened out the score (after the first) with winning the second game. The final score of the game was Rainz 8-Colorado Futures 6.
Game three
Having won a game the team felt confident and knew they would just get better with each game. Their third game of the day was against The Colorado Mustangs. Simon played an amazing attacking game with four goals and an assist. Binder also played great with three goals and an assist. Murray and Cat Snider each contributed two goals, Louie had one. Victoria Maxon, Hemmelgarn, Olivia Hull, Sarah Courtney also had an assist each. Dessert and Hemmelgarn both had two CT and Louie had one. Louie and Hemmelgarn both had a groundball. The Rainz again had a victory and each person was feeling more comfortable about the team work with each game. They finished out the day with a winning record of 2-1 and were anxious to return the next day and face more teams. Rainz 12 – Colorado Mustangs 7.
Day 2: June 25th
Game one
The first game of the second day was against Ohio and the Rainz wanted to begin the day with a win, and that is exactly what they did. However they were again in the loss of two defenders/Midfielders due to sickness. The girls were tired from the games the previous day but did not let that get to them. They played hard the whole game and ignored their tired bodies. Binder played exceedingly well and had three goals and an assist. Creighton, Hemmelgarn, Caroline Mahoney, Murray, Oesterle, and Simon all added in one goal. Hemmelgarn also had one assist. Dessert played a great defensive game, having 3 CT. Louie and Creighton each had two CT, and Lisa Blau-Elliott, Hemmelgarn, Murray and Oesterle each had one. Sarah Babich, Blau-Elliot and Grose all had one groundball. Schomaker played a great game, letting only 3 balls past her. Rainz 9 – Ohio 3.
Game two
Now having a record of 3-1 the Rainz were feeling better about the team. They were all playing great together and knew how to win together. They were now to face the Oregon team, who was undefeated and from the other division. They knew this was going to be a tough game and knew they would need to work hard the whole game and not let up for even a second. The game started out in the hands of Oregon but the Rainz were soon fighting back. This was the closest game yet and it seemed to be the hardest. Oesterle had two goals, (leading for this game). Creighton, Grose, Hull, Hemmelgarn, and Murray all popped one the back of the net too. Oregon knew Binder was a great attacker and had a strong defender on her at all times. Oregon held Binder to just one assist. Grose had three assists, and Mahoney had one. Babich and Kathleen Gill each had two CT. Blau-Elliot, Dessert, Fithian, Grose, and Louie all had one CT. Gill had two groundballs, and Hemmelgarn and Timberlake each had one groundball. Team Oregon was a great team and playing them made the Rainz work even harder and taught them to stay in game till the end. Even though Oregon came up with the win, Rainz still played a great game and was the only team that Oregon didn’t beat by ten or more goals. Rainz 7- Oregon 11
Game three
For the third game of the day Rainz faced Colorado Elevate. The Rainz wanted to make up for the loss of the previous game, and they did. They almost had a shut out against Elevates, letting in only one goal. This game was again a wonderful way to end the day and gave the team time to practice things that they weren’t able to in the previous harder games. Creighton and Murray each had two goals, while Fithian, Hull, Hemmelgarn, Mahoney, Simon and Timberlake each had one. Snider had two assists. Louie and Mahoney each had two CT. Babich, Dessert, Hemmelgarn and Snider all had one CT. Dessert also had two groundballs, and Babich, Blau-Elliott, Fithian, and Timberlake all had one groundball. Yet again, the Rainz ended the day on a high note and were prepared to return the next day to face Texas for a second time. Schomaker played a great game with letting in only one goal. The defense as a whole also played a great game, holding them to that one goal. Rainz 10 - Colorado Elevate 1.
Day 3: June 26th
Game one
For the second time the Rainz face Team Texas. Ready to play them again and give it their all, they took the field with intensity. If they could win this game then they would be playing for 1st or 2nd, but if they lost they would play for 3rd or 4th. Even though Rainz was ready for this game, so was Texas. Yet again Texas started out with a lead and the Rainz couldn’t get the ball. The Rainz played a hard game and played well as a team. They had great improvement from game one when they played Texas, even if the score didn’t show it. Fithian, Grose and Maxon were the only scores of this game and each had one goal. Binder had one assist. Babich, Dessert, and Gill all had two CT. Hemmelgarn, Mahoney, and Timberlake each had one CT. Hemmelgarn also had two groundballs, and Dessert scooped up one. The Rainz were then to face Midwest for the 3rd and 4th place, and Texas went off to face Oregon. Rainz made a great improvement and really played as a team; however Texas was also a great team and was on for that game. Rainz 3 -Texas 14
Game two
The Rainz wanted to make up for the loss to Texas by winning the game against Midwest Elite and getting third in the tournament. Rainz started out the game great and gained an early lead. Grose and Murray each had four goals, Hemmelgarn had three, Binder, Dessert, Fithian, Hull, Mahoney, Maxon, and Snider all had one goal. Binder contributed two assists, Creighton, Hull, Mahoney and Murray all had one assist. Hemmelgarn has two CT, Louie, Mahoney, Murray, and Timberlake all had one. Gill had two groundballs, B-E, Creighton, Grose, Louie, and Oesterle all had one groundball. The Rainz beat Midwest Elite 18-8 and got third place in the tournament. It was a great way to end the trip and getting third place was a great accomplishment.
The Rainz played well overall in the tournament and everyone had a great time. Coaches Sarah Medwell and Anna Tanodra did great and really picked up on what the team needed to do in order to improve. The next tournament is in Sonoma California, July 6-9. The Rainz will continue to practice until the end of summer and will improve more and more. Breckenridge was a great tournament and really good way to start out as a team. This is the first year of the Seattle Rainz.
