Issaquah Gold v Mercer Island Gray

While both teams battled for possession throughout the first quarter, Issaquah scored first with a bounce shot by Issy’s Director. Mercer answered back in the 8th minute with a nice drive by Ben Eggers who finished with a ripper top right. Issy gets it right back and scores two more times before the end of the 1st quarter. Again Issaquah dominates possession for the majority of the second quarter and Director scores another for the poised Issy team.

Peter Burrows of Mercer Island comes out firing as he dodges Hurd of Issaquah and finishes in tight over Issy’s keeper. Burrows gets the ball right back off the face and looks like he’ll score again but is denied when the long pole Leibsohn of Issy de-sticks him on the crease. Leibsohn clears it up the sideline as he’s been doing all day and moves the ball through an attackmen who redirects through X. The quarter passes by quickly with both teams looking for scoring opportunities. Issy scores two more and ends the third quarter with a goal by Wieringer assisted by Burg.

The fourth quarter starts and keeper Jake Patterson makes two great saves and clears the ball through Sten Olson who is jumped by four Issy poles and loses the ball. Off of the unsettled situation Rogeus of Issy goes unassisted, to add another goal to Issy’s rain on domination. Both teams exchange possession for three minutes until a large scrum, ends up putting the ball in the stick of Michael Fernandes of takes a hard bouncer from the restraining line that beats Issy’s goalie. After two consecutive penalties against Issy, Mercer is now two men up, and the coaching staff calls a quick time out to put in a play.

Mercer comes out of the huddle ready to score; Jason Hasegawa picks up the ball and quickly notices a flaw in the play. He takes it behind to X to try to make something happen. He finds Tamir Amitai who takes a shot that fly’s wide. Issy chases it down and regains possession; they kill the penalties and hold the ball until the final whistle. Issaquah wins 9-4 in a hard fought game.

Sten Olson of Mercer finishes the game with 11 ground balls and 1 goal. Issy’s Director finishes with 3 goals and 1 assist. And Wieringer of Issy finishes with 1 goal and 3 assists. “This is a team that hasn’t had a real coach up until this week and we already saw improvements. I’m glad to help out with the boys and I’m excited for the rest of the season. We’re a young and small team but that won’t stop us, they all want to play and that’s all I ask for”. Said head Coach Hayward Giraud of his young Mercer team.
