Lynnwood Win over Snohomish 9-3

Last night, the Skagit conference title was up for grabs in a battle between Snohomish and Lynnwood, the top two teams in the conference at the Alderwood Middle School.

Upon arrival to the field, I couldn’t help but notice the immense amount of supporters on both sidelines, cheering their teams on. Both teams were playing intense Lacrosse on both sides of the ball. By the end of the first quarter, Lynnwood was up 4-1 with goals from Casey Bloomquist, Kyton Blair and Sean Girgus. This was one of the most physical games I have seen to date. Teams were battling for ground balls, in fact, this was so physical, that someone lost a tooth on the field. You don’t see that every day.

Lots of change of possession between Lynnwood and Snohomish; only a few shots for each team during the second quarter, but one big save and clear attempt gave Snohomish the opportunity to intercept the ball between the clearing defensemen and the goalie to give Snohomish midfielder Burnette a race to the cage and beats Lynnwood goalie Selley for a far side net score. In quick succession, Burnette gets the ball after a quick face-off possession and shoots from up top scoring again making the score 4-3 in the 3rd quarter. Near the end of the half, Alex Burns gets a nice bounce shot from up top to sneak past Jesse Wolfe to go into halftime Lynnwood leading 5-3.

The Third quarter would belong to Lynnwood. Sean Girgus takes a solo sweep and scores from up top just a few minutes into the third quarter. The pace of the game is definitely slower and more physical due to the sloppy field and lack of footing, which does change the possession a lot. After several changes of possession, Lynnwood keeper hits a wide-open midfielder Alex Burns for an outlet which he feeds to Girgus for a jump shot that finds the back of the net making the score 7-3 with a few minutes left in the third quarter.

Harrison Roulstone, who has been noticeably silent, wrapped himself around the cage from X, for a difficult score on Selley to make the score 7-4, and that would be the last score for Stanwood. In fact, that goal was removed due to illegal equipment, and the score stayed at 9-3!  At the end of the third quarter, Snohomish had picked up 26 GBs and Lynnwood had picked up 40. Alex burns takes another possession from up top, and moves the ball to Girgus who again rings the bell making the score 8-3. Lynnwood is dominating possession and Lynnwood captain Casey Bloomquist moved the ball to Girgus who scored another far side shot left-handed with four minutes on the clock. With the final minutes counting down in a 9-3 game, Snohomish gets a free clear for interference. Inside the last minute, Snohomish’s Roulstone is doing everything he can to score. Selley made 14 of 18 saves, and Girgus brings in 6 points on 5 goals. Lynnwood takes a demonstrative win to hold the Skagit crown for now.
