Complete list?
best washington players
Though the amount of good lacrosse players has obviously increased over the years, there were several very good players from the 80s and early 90s that could play with anyone.
Some of these have been mentioned previously, while others have not...
Rob Blethen
Blase Morgan
Chris Lowe
Eric Contreras
Jeff and Scott Droppleman
Jeff Liebert
Jeff Wagner
Bo and Jamie Weingartner
Andrew Carras
Jeff O'Brien
Jeff Roberts
Please add others as you see fit..

add charlie kenyon, he was pretty much a beast
DII all-time, maybe
I don't think he ranks up there with the best in the state, perhaps he's among the best middies in DII.
no
no he definitely could run in DI. as a sophomore when overlake was still in DI he did fairly decent considering the team. an that was his sophomore year. he should be on the list.

A New List
Attack:
Mark Dingfield, Lakeside '97
Kyler Spivey, Bainbridge '98
Colin Lake, Mercer Island '99
Adam Smith, Bainbridge '01
Luke Larson, Mercer Island '03
David VanderHoek, Bainbridge '05
Midfield:
Todd Thorpe, Curtis '98
Jeff Pattison, Mercer Island '99
Jordan Bayly, Eastside '00
Spencer Evans, Bainbridge '03
Chris Taylor, Mercer Island '05
Drew Snider, Garfield '06
Defense:
Will Dawson, Bainbridge '97
Jeff Jorve, Lakeside '00
Jon Bodansky, Lakeside '02
Sean Whitsitt, Lakeside '05
Goal:
Noah Symington, Mercer Island '05
add Preble
he was a beast, a true do it all defender. also, Penn or Jaques in goal over Symington, both are way better, Symington wasn't even the best goalie while he played, Montoya was.
adjust
Good call on the addition of Dawson (went to Denver) Symingon is good, but Mike Penn still is the best! Add Kelton Johnson to the middie list (Bainbridge '00). And check the date on Smith...2002, because Dave Biehn (Mercer Island) was THE attackman in '01.
Smith...
your right about Adam Smith's graduation date was 2002, but you could not be more wrong about Dave Biehn in 01. True Dave did graduate then but he was not the leagues best attackmen. adam smith set the state record for points that year with 104, nobody else even came within 40 of him that year. i cant see how after those stats anybody could say that any attackman other than Smith was the best that year.Biehn was a great player but dont make outrageous comments like that without doing some homework.
rain check
ill get into my noah v. jason arguement after wednesday. However, they're both great goalies, and have left their mark on washington
DII?
How about an All DII team? I've watched some pretty good players at some DII and even DII schools in the past several years. Some of them were on DII teams that eventually went DI and others were from "small market" teams. Here are some that I can think of in the past 5 years:
Attack:
Tom Gibbon, Curtis
Jack Andrews, Eastside
John Harty, Issaquah
Ryan McFadden, Klahowya
Charlie Kenyon, Overlake
Jon Matusiefsky, Issaquah (moved to DI senior year)
Dane Loraas, Vashon
Middie:
Vic Rybachuk, South Kitsap
Nick Tierney, Issaquah (moved to DI senior year)
Cris Hutchinson, Issaquah (moved to DI senior year)
Derek Mills, Roughriders
Tristan Droppert, Overlake (contributing at Colorado College)
Jeff "Train" Cavner, South Kitsap
Defense:
Rob Novorolsky, South Kitsap (played middie, but now a D-stick for NDNU)
Sean Bobadilla, Curtis
Dustin Cramer, Issaquah (moved to DI senior year)
Chris Moore, Garfield
Danny Feeman, Roughriders
Rick Martell-Scott, Roughriders
Kurt Preuss, Roughriders
Goalie:
Tony Maack, Roughriders
Matt Bush, Vashon
Eli Steffen, Vashon
Hal Glade, Franklin
Some of these guys moved on to play at the collegiate level. All in all, they put up some pretty impressive numbers. The difference between DI and DII always seemed to me like the difference between East Coast and West Coast lacrosse. The DI game was more of a posession game with some good defense, while the DII game was a little more wide open with high scoring matches. I'll never forget a game back in 2004 between South Kitsap and Klahowya. The two teams were branches off the Kitsap Pioneers team, so there was a bit of a good natured rivalry. The game was back and forth with Klahowya coming out on top 19-17. Rybachuk had 5g 2a and McFadden had 6g 5a for 11 points including the game clincher with under a minute to play.
Have others that should be on this list (or removed?), speak now.
Oh the glory days of d2
Oh the glory days of d2 ...
Novo played pole at SK and played some attack too in his sr.
But you need to add some more franklin cats to that list, believe it or not that team was was a damn D2 powerhouse 2000-2002. Those kids would beat the living crap out of kids... so put up Sylvester (i forget his last name but that kid was crazy... i heard he came out of open heart surgery and still managed an all state season) at pole. Also add Vu Thatch and Robert Valdez at attack.
Your middie line needs work. Tyler Carr played only 2 seasons (one at pole and the other at midde) for Seattle Prep and managed to get 4th in voting for All American that year. Sangeorzan also needs some attention in this list, as he played some d2 ball till his jr. year
Anyways, im not too sure if i really agree of your assessment of d2 v. d1 style of play. It was always my impression ... as a d2 player all through highschool (sadly)... that the best teams in d2 possessed nasty defenses. Roosevelt and Garfield is a good example of this, when those two teams batteled in 2-1 overtime games. Granted the offenses on both of the teams blew, they along with issaquah still managed to upset d1 programs (Lakeside, Prep, Bainbridge, Hale, and some of the others).
Back to studying...
DII Only
I realize that some kids spent time in both divisions, but they seem to get their recognition once they go up to "The Bigs." For example, I don't think Sangeorzan would've made AA if his team would have stayed at the DII level for his senior year. Sadly, there are some schools that due to population or popularity have been "stuck" in DII, and those players don't get to see the type of competition or the visibility that they might have seen at the DI level. Rybachuk and Novo are perfect examples. Put Victor in a DI program, and he would've been AA, without a doubt.
As for the defense, I agree with you. There were some great defensive squads out there in DII, but it seemed like 2002-2005 was dominated by the DII scorers like Gibbon, Andrews, Loraas, McFadden, Kenyon, Novorolsky and Rybachuk.
I wasn't too familiar with Franklin, so thanks for the info on that squad.
Okay yeah so i have the
Okay yeah so i have the benefit of never really playing against anyone of those players in the regular seaeson as at the time i played in the metro league. But i did have a chance to go to the first Sonoma shootout --when team washington was around -- with i think all of those players (except that loraas kid) and i can tell you that the only REAL offensive threats on that list you just had were Tom and Jack -- but then again im making the wrong comparissons as that was a west coast lax camp, not d2 ball. But victor and Novo being all americans? Victor was a vacuum for groundsballs and was a great athlete but AA .. like Adam... but was in no where the same leaugue in intelligence of a player that Adam is.
Also Hayward Evans from Franklin was a nasty midfielder.
Just Curious
Since you played against some of these guys and went to Sonoma, are you on my list?
Also, I only think Victor would have been AA, not Rob. I don't think he was ever very comfortable in All-Star games because he was so used to being "the Man" on his Kitsap teams. But he was a ferocious groundball machine and could finish with the best of them. I think he could have developed his overall game intelligence in an environment where he had a better supporting cast, and playing against stiffer competition.
As for Jack and Tom being the only offensive threats... Gotta disagree. Tom was big and strong and dominated against teams whose defense wasn't real strong. But the guy had no wheels, not the greatest stick, and was shut out against Eastside in the 2003 championship game. Most of his scoring came from picking up trash around the crease and dunking it. As for Jack, again, I think he was a bit one-dimensional. He basically posted people up and used his lower body strength to his advantage. I never really saw too much of his stick skills or dodges. Loraas and McFadden had as good, if not better stick skills than Jack or Tom, and could take their man to the net and score or find teammates for open looks.
I have nothing negative to say about Adam. He was a stud, and better overall than Victor. But put Victor at Prep, and he would've developed a better game.
yeah im on your list. Im not
yeah im on your list. Im not reallly going to argue with you about these players honestly because they all only had one hand -- the only differentiating factor about them was their athleticism, which Jack and Tom most certianly had. Yeah Victor was a nasty dude and all... my best memory of him thought will forever be when casey mccormick screamed at him "LETS ROLL A BIG FATTIE FOR THE BIG VIC DADDY!" Fun times at sonoma.
Come on...
Lets be honest here that is not the best defense. henry yes is a cool guy, but he is just that a cool guy. there are better out there Novo's better, Preble's better and Holt's better.
and why isn't thorpe on this list that guy can flat play the game. He could probably be on top of every list he played everything a whitter.
sorry henry
henry was one of the best stick handling longpoles, but thats it. he usually got burned by the better attackmen, take vander hoek for instince, 6g 6a. Preble should definitely make the list over him, he had stick skills that were as good if not better than henry's, a 90mph shot, and was the matchup no one wanted when they stepped on the field. he was a beast
note:
Note: Henry could shoot 90+ too, not as consistant maybe but i've seen him do it.
I would take whitsit over
I would take whitsit over holt anyday.
But thorpe is sick and deserves to be on there
Lets see...
Kyler Spivey: Really needs to be added
Dylan Preble: Beast of a player, plays for CSU
Jason Montoya: Hes a pretty sick goalie.....maybe not best yet
Aaron Foster!!!
I CANNOT BELIEVE FOSTER IS NOT ON THIS LIST!!! i played with him in 90' and if i remember he was THE 1st washington kid to go play in the east coast north-south allstar game!!! He was an attackmen at UPS but he played middie very well!!! anyone who saw him play knows he should be here!!
L
Aaron Foster
He was a damn good player no doubt. However, he wasn't the first to attend the HS North South Game. I can't remember what year that WA ST received AA awards, but guys from here were invited to attend the NS game prior to 1990.
There were at least three prior to Aaron that I know of:
1989 - Andrew Carras - Lakeside
1988 - Jeff Roberts - Lakeside
1987 - Jeff Liebert (sp?) - Bellevue
You've got to include Roberts on the All-Time team and Carras is a strong candidate as well. Both went to the next level - Roberts became a 2nd Team AA for Div. 3 W & L. Carras went to Duke and was running 2 line middie as a freshman before transferring to Harvard to complete school
90's
i think if any player from the 90's deserves to be on this list it should be Kyler Spivey no questions asked. anybody who had the honor of watching him play will agree with me. he is one of the hardest players to play against and one of the best to play with and watch.
also i agree that chris taylor should be added to this list.
Adam or Aaron?
Adam or Aaron?
All time team
Todd Thorpe maybe somewhere on this list?
Sulzbacher learned
Sulzbacher learned everything he knows from Dan Holt. Without Preble and Holt on D the whole list is a joke.
uh
henry and holt play completely different. holt relies on his intensity and physical style of play. henry uses more checks and his superior stick skills. so there
Gotta agree
Holt was a beast. Preble has proven his worth for a pretty well respected USLIA program (CSU).
all-wa
first things first take Gillis and Thilo off. Anyone who saw gillis play can see he only has a shot if he has a two step windup and a clean follow through. anyone who doesnt think so get your hands on the 2003 BI-MI title game. Thilo could face off and score, but he couldnt run the field. As far as i can tell with snider is all you have to do is shut him off, and he wont do anything. i would think that any player on that list would have to produce even when being shut off. definetly keep taylor pattison kelten and evans, bailey too.
As far as the goalie I think Alex Jaques from Bi 2004 is being severely overlooked. Penn is solid but Jaques is the best hands down. Another player from BI being overlooked is Dylan Preble 2004. he could score, hit, check, clear and pick up GB's more than chaddick or bodansky.
Concernig Spivey, the guy is disgusting. ive played with him for years and he makes the whole field look like its in slow motion. his moves leave defensmen laughing and the goalie on the ground.he should be the first one on the list.
Pick another goalie
I would say the all-time best goalies, play their four seasons without suspension and certainly make first team all-state as a senior.
the four seasons part
the four seasons part automatically disqualifies jaques as he moved here his sophmore year. as far as skill and potential wise he may have been the best. Mike Penn is a very solid goalie and is one of the best, playing DIII at Colorado College.
?
i dont see how not playing four seasons here disqualify's jaques. how do you explain kids that sit on the bech and then go start to play their senior year? bottom line, past his suspension and that he came to BI a sophomore he had the best save percentage of any goalie, more than that he could outlet, make highlight save's and knew how to command the D. he deserves to be on the team. penn is good too though, cant forget him.
good point
very true
retort
I'll let you pick apart my goalie choice; however, I won't let Henry be labeled in the top three defensemen to ever graduate from this state. He had a great stick, but outside of that, he was nothing but your average solid pole. Any of those attackmen you listed would pick him apart.. the other guys are a bit before my time so I wouldn't know. And Picha didn't impress me much, he hardly did anything against Mercer or the up and coming D2 Issaquah team that blew them out 15-6 on the rock.
Question...
Man i keep on hearing about Kyler Spivey being sick but i have no idea who the guy is... anyone wanna get me updated on this mystery from BI?
But Gillis doesnt belong on that list... every goalie figured out his golf swing shot by his senior year.
But how about adding Ben York as FOGO?
Spivey
Spivey graduated from BI in 97-98. Quickest attackman (maybe player) ever our of Washington. Went to UVM, maybe the first kid out of the state to play DI. I can agree that Spivey should be added to the list.
Also Dingfield went to Swarthmore and he should be on the list as an Attackman. Another Lakeside alum Jeff Jorve also deserves a spot on the D-list.
let's even this up a bit...
Mark Dingfield High School All-American (all-conference from Dartmouth and Lakeside should unseat Fine or Vanderhoek. Middies should Include Todd Thorpe- High school All-American and Whittier star. He is the only local player asked to try out for the Dragons MLL franchise.
Midfield: Keep Jordan, Spencer, Kelton, Pattison, Taylor and maybe Gillis- add York (face-off), Sangoerzan, and Thorpe. Snider is good, but he hasn't even graduated yet.
Attack: Larson, Smith, Vander Hoek- add Picha
Defense: Whittsit, Sulzbacher, Chadick, Jorve
Goalie: Penn is a good call.
what?
are you kidding me? ding field replace van der hoek, he holds the record for points in a season in a year where defenses made whole gameplans to stop him, and is at the top of alltime scoring without a doubt.
Jorve and Thorpe
Jorve has to be one of the quickest D guys ever out of WA and his stick skills were something to be desired by all. He would often run attack and middie in games. He was the only D guy I ever saw that could match up with Bailey.
Todd Thorpe definately needs to be on the middie list. He ran middie with Brandon Fortier at Whittier.
Jordan, Evens, and Thorpe would be the first middie line if there was an all-state team.
Defense is really a toss up in WA. There haven't been many formidable D men in WA. You could really make a case for anyone. Jorve should be the only real consensus.
amendments
If you take out Gillis, Fine, Sulzbacher, and Penn, and put in Sangoerzen, Chirls, Sheldon (with a pole), and Noah Symington in goal.
symington? are you serious?
are you serious about having symington in there? he wasnt even the best goalie in the state last year. That went to montoya. I can think of many goalies before symington.
ya
I have to agree...symington shared 1st team honors last year... if he was the real deal even last year he woulda been able to be 1st team alone...i like penn there... but if montoya keeps the way he is playing he could give penn a run for his money... i would also like to see sangorzan on the list for middies
Uhhh..right
I think that symington should be on that list. He did share the first team all state with montoya but if you look at his stats, his block percentage was alot higher than montoya. The only reason montoya got first team was because he blocked alot of goals but he also missed a few too.
Dude the kid only played one
Dude the kid only played one year of decent ball out here cuze of WHSBLA rules... i dont think thats enough to qualify him as one of the best goalies in washington state history. Besides you also have to remember that Noah had the benefit of NOT playing against the best offense in league play... his own team. Statistics are misleading foo goalies, often this is the hardest position to judge off of statistics alone as you never know the quality of shots the goalies are facing and the defense that the goalie has to work with. So with that said... with what montoya had for defense last year and has this year i would still say that he is the better individual goalie skillwise.
k...
Yea well...Noah came from a team that was alot higher ranked than any team in WA. And if you see him, he knows how to block with his arm on his off side. If you shoot on Montoya on his off sides, the ball just goes in.
okay im sorry but that is a
okay im sorry but that is a bs statement. I watched a game last year where a guy was driving offside pipe. Symington for one didnt get on pipe so the guy would shoot stickside and not his offside, he totally got burned on an offside shot that was MAYBE 60 mph, and thats being generous. the ball was slow motion. So saying montoya cant block offside and symington can is not true. Id take montoya any day. He did a great job last year with a super shabby defense. Symington had a pretty solid d and never had to face the mercer offense. So montoya is the better of the 2, hands down.
Dude...
You can't say Montoya's block percentage was ruined because of MI. MI played Garfield what 2 or 3 times. yea Im pretty sure that would bring Montoya's percentage down alot...
don't forget about luke
don't forget about luke boswell, from overlake. he was sick
Agreed
I was looking to see if anyone mentioned luke, I replaced him after his senior year and that kid was nasty. He didn't have a great defense and he kept overlake in alot of games back when overlake was d1 and a somewhat decent team. A possible attack candidate would be C.P. Waite he played til his junior year and then transfered to a bording school back east.
