Getting an opportunity to watch former players play at the college level is a rare opportunity for any high school lacrosse coach. Having coached high school lacrosse since 1994 I had never seen one of my former players play at the collegiate level. That’s why I could not pass up the opportunity this year to watch former Lakeside standouts Jon Bodansky and Sean Whitsitt play.
Jon is a former All-American defenseman at Lakeside, class of ’02 and is graduating this year from Colby College in Waterville, Maine. Jon is a four year letterman and was named captain for the ’06 season. I watch Jon square off against Trinity College on a cold and windy day in early April. Jon drew Trinity’s top scorer Curtis Kahn (26g 18a) and held him to one assist and one goal in Colby’s exciting 8-7 victory.
It was a real treat to see Jon play at such a high level and do so well. Rob Quinn, Colby’s head coach, spoke very highly of Jon and related to me that Jon will leave a big hole on defense when he graduates in May. Jon let me know how valuable his lacrosse experience at Colby has been to him and how honored he was to be named captain.
The following Tuesday I made my way to Brown University in Providence, Rhode Island to watch Sean Whitsitt, Lakeside ’05, and his Harvard team square off against Brown. Sean has had an immediate impact at Harvard and has worked himself into the starting line up as a defensive short stick specialist. Using his speed and athleticism Sean played a great game and was even able to get off a very good shot on goal. Harvard controlled most of the game and came away with a very satisfying 10-6 victory. Sean will letter as a freshman, being only the third Washington player to do so at the DI level. Watch Sean play this Sunday on ESPNU at 7pm against Syracuse.
