HS Girl's Weekly Beat - Playoffs

Features
VARSITY A PLAYOFFS:

Last year, Lakeside barely edged out Mercer Island to meet Bainbridge, who handedly defeated Overlake in the playoffs, for the Championship game. In an incredibly tight final, Bainbridge managed to defeat Lakeside 11-10 for the 2005 Varsity A Division State Championship title.

Three of those same four teams will be looking for a 2006 championship win. However, in a new expanded playoff running this year, six teams will be vying for a spot at Memorial Stadium.

Added to the mix is rookie team Lake Sammamish (8-6-0), who will be playing 2005 runner up Lakeside (10-3-1) on Monday May 15th at Lakeside. Lakeside defeated Lake Sammamish 13-3 in their only meeting early on in the season. Since then, Lake Sammamish has had a string of victories and close games against top teams.

The second first round playoff game on Monday will be between Holy Names (7-6-1), who barely sealed a playoff spot over late bloomer North Kitsap, and Mercer Island (9-5-0).

Division leaders Forest Ridge (10-3-1) and Bainbridge (14-0-0) each have a bye for the first round of playoffs.

VARSITY B PLAYOFFS:

With new teams in the Varsity B division and both the 2005 B State Champion, Snohomish, and the runner up, Lake Sammamish, moving to the A Division, none of the teams in contention for this years Varsity B State Championship were in the playoffs last year.

On Tuesday May 16th, Seattle Prep (5-8-0), second in the West, will meet third in the East, Tacoma (10-3-0). Tacoma defeated Prep in season play. The winner will play Mercer Island (11-2-0), the division leader for the East who has a first round bye, on Thursday May 18th.

Second in the East, Eastside Catholic (10-2-1), will play third in the West, Nathan Hale (4-8-1). In their season match-up, Eastside Catholic barely edged out Nathan Hale 7-6, so this should be a game to watch. The winner will move on to play Roosevelt (9-2-1), the division leader in the West who has a first round bye, on Thursday.
