VARSITY A
Bainbridge vs. Lakeside
In a repeat battle of the 2005 Championship, Lakeside and Bainbridge took the field for the 2006 State Championship game. This time the outcome would be different.
Though Lakeside started out the game with a drive, the ball quickly turned over to Bainbridge. Lakeside’s defense recovered, but despite taking their time on attack, they could not get the ball past Bainbridge goalie Dimi Lotakis. Then, Bainbridge scored, and it looked like it was going to be a clean sweep for Bainbridge who quickly jumped to a four goal lead with the first two goals by Sally Baumgartner, followed with a goal by Natalie Evans and one by Mariah Walk. However, a timeout provided Lakeside the chance to regroup, and thus began their slow ascent back into the game. Gracie Binder knocked in the first goal for Lakeside, followed by Lauren McAndrews. Bainbridge answered back with a goal by Marley Horne and then one by Colbi Brawner. Lakeside was not finished though and, with only a few minutes left in the half, they pumped out 3 unanswered goals by, first, Brett Eisenhart, then Ellen Fitzharris and Brett Eisenhart again. Suddenly, the game was up for contention again with a half time score of Bainbridge 6, Lakeside 5.
Lakeside started off the second half again with a drive, this time by sophomore mid-fielder Ellie Crutcher, whose goal was rescinded with an offsides call. Then, with the ball back in Bainbridge possession, Sally Baumgartner faked out goalie Lisa Schomaker and scored off a penalty shot, putting Bainbridge up by 2. Lakeside proceeded to spread out the Bainbridge defense, opening up the middle and an opportunity for senior attack Ellen Fitzharris to put in another goal for Lakeside. Senior attack Tylie Cramer found another opportunity with a penalty shot and tied the game at 7. The Lakeside charge continued and Brett Eisenhart took her team into the lead with another goal. Gracie Binder followed suite and put Lakeside up by two off an interception on a Bainbridge clear. A timeout by Bainbridge did not stop Lakeside’s determination as they put in two more, one by Gracie Binder and another by Brett Eisenhart, before Bainbridge’s Colbi Brawner answered back. The battled ensued, and Bainbridge eventually put in one more, scored by Natalie Evans with 3:12 remaining. That would be the end of the scoring though. Despite further efforts by the Bainbridge attack, Lakeside goalie Lisa Schomaker continued to make crucial saves. The game finished with an 11-9 Lakeside victory, providing a sweet revenge for Lakeside who lost to Bainbridge by one in the 2005 Championship game.
VARSITY B
Tacoma vs. Roosevelt
A nail biter game that came down to the last second, literally, the Varsity B 2006 Championship game was one not to miss. Both teams played incredibly, full of heart and determination, but it was a last second goal by Roosevelt’s Caitlin Mills, that entitled Roosevelt the 2006 Varsity B State Champions.
Perhaps even more significant is that, not only did Roosevelt lose by 4 to Tacoma in their season match-up, Roosevelt is a brand new team to the league.
Madeline Grose led the Roosevelt attack with 5 goals and an assist, followed by Olivia Hull and Caitlin Mills, who each nailed 3. Frannie Hemmelgarn was held to one goal but still managed to get off 4 assists for five game points. Hemmelgarn also dominated 4 draws, forced 2 turnovers and dug up 4, while teammate Kelsea Hazelhurst played a strong defensive game with 4 forced turnovers. Olivia Hull dug up 4 ground balls. Goalie Jessica Freedman saved 14 of 25 shots.
Tacoma’s Anna Holcomb ran the attack with 4 goals and an assist, while Anna Callaghan earned 4 game points with 2 goals and 2 assists. Caitlin White netted 3 goals, and Blair Callaghan added 2 assists to her goal. Alia Malo scored one. Alison Jensen helped out her attack with 3 assists and Annabel Dessert gave one. Defensively, Malo led the way with 4 caused turnovers in addition to 3 ground balls and a draw. Dessert competed hard for the draw, controlling 4. Goalie Meghan Woodard saved 16 of 28.
