It was a repeat of the 2005 season Championship game and looked to be a 3-peat for reigning champions Bainbridge Island but Lakeside had other ideas.
Lakeside went into the championships as the underdog and in strange twist played Bainbridge who they played in the first game of the season. During that game BI came out on top 9-4. They’d meet again mid-season but Bainbridge would again come out on top, beating Lakeside 14-10. So what happened to turn it around for Lakeside? Was it the 2 earlier losses this season or the near miss last year, losing in the Championship finals by one goal. Being the final game in a series of nail-biting games definitely helps with both the boys D1 and girl’s Varsity B games, coming down to win in the final few seconds. It just comes down to who wants it more and plays the best on the day!
On the day it looked like BI was again going to come out on top with them leading the first half but Lakeside’s defense was able to shut them down in the second and keep them to only 3 goals. Lakeside clawed their way back and took the lead with just under 15 minutes left in the game.
Shots on goal were almost identical with 26 on BI and 24 on Lakeside; both goalies had 16 saves a piece. It was a great day for Brett Eisenhart scoring 4 of the 11 goals, followed closely by Gracie Binder with 3 goals and 1 assist.
An honorable mention for Sally Baumgarter and Colbi Brawner scoring 3 and 2 goals a piece. Colbi is number 2 in the leagues top scorers and consistently produced for her team.
Congratulations to both teams on a thrilling final to the 2006 Championships!
