RECAPS

DIVISION I
Couple of big changes to the leader board this week. After a highly anticipated game between Bellevue and Mercer, Mercer had climbed back into the drivers seat.

Garfield Now possessing two of the leagues top scorers and three of the top six leaders in points per game, Garfield’s offense leads in production. Drew Snider leads the threesome including Hoffman and Rohrbach, who are racking up numbers. A big win over Lakeside in division helped improve stat rankings and a strong win over Eastside also paints a strong defensive picture. Montoya leads the league in Goals Against Average and save percentage, behind a defense that is solid but not dominating makes the Bulldogs a very well rounded team. Look for a test of the last two undefeated teams on Wednesday when they take on the Spartans.

Bainbridge Island The BI came to play last week defeating Mercer Island at home, and stifling them the entire second half. The Gilbreath brothers and Casey Weisner have demonstrated solid performances as the Bainbridge defense has something to prove. Bainbridge out hustled Mercer in ground balls nearly 2-1, and the offense had some great ball movement against a good defense. The Vashon win earlier in the week showed poise and stamina against a conference rival led by Delius and Knight, but the BI midfield seems loaded with other weapons in Olson and Masi. Bainbridge might have just found their groove, another great game to watch on Wednesday.

Bellevue After defeating Issaquah in a great game last week, the young Bellevue squad earned stripes in a loss against Mercer, unable to generate the kind of offense they needed to score on big opponents. In their second game of the week against Vashon, Bellevue’s offense finally started to gel and get some production. Nic Larivee lit it up with six points in three goals and three assists in a game with scoring spread amongst seven players. An exhibition game and a Roosevelt game should give Bellevue more game experience to tune the offensive engine they started and hone in on Garfield for Friday. Great defense against a great offense; I can’t wait.

Seattle Prep With continuous production from All-state attackmen like Parietti and Bjorkman, and Midfield magician O’Neill, Prep added a plethora of points to their standing in solid wins over conference rivals Hale and Roosevelt. Prep still is working on its goalie problem missing Mike Travers, but may be able to hang right below Garfield in conference to make the playoffs and give Mike time to heal. Curtis will be a good test, against a better defense and solid keeper between the pipes though both games are out of conference this week. Prep also has to figure out the team defense to manage against the bigger fish in the division, nonetheless, wins this week bump prep up in rankings four big spots.

Issaquah Issaquah squeaked by Maple Valley in a double-OT victory on the 18th with Campi scoring 4 and Gerrard doing his usual to dismantle offenses. Issaquah defeated Eastside and will face Lakeside on Tuesday and Roosevelt on Thurs. No conference games this week. Issaquah will have to continue to their pace leading up to their last game before spring break, Garfield.

Mercer Island After dropping a tough loss to Bainbridge on Friday, Mercer is far from out of the picture. In two Sound conference games this week, Mercer will take on Vashon on Tuesday, and then a feisty 4-1 Prep offense on Friday at home. Mercer just needs to find their groove, they will rebound quite quickly. With such powerful weapons, Mercer will need others to step up, and lead as well.

Curtis has two games this week, Prep and Eastside again. Winning over MV and Eastside last week, Curtis will have to battle Prep on Wednesday before their Eastside game, and will have to face a solid team. Curtis will have to figure out what to do about the Prep attack, but may see the end of the week 1-1.

Vashon Ended last week on a tough note with a 11-2 loss at Bellevue. Their week started with a close game 8-6 where they nearly handed Bainbridge a loss, and a thumping of Roosevelt in the middle of the week. Alex Craighead and Nic Wilks have been the main engines in the offensive machine, and the balanced list of starters will have their hands full at Mercer.

Maple Valley The Vandals are coming off of a demonstrative win at Hale and a close loss at Curtis. The Vandals seem to be hot and cold. Moments of brilliance are followed by underperformance while normally hitting potential in the fourth quarter. Look for the Vandals to put together four quarters of Lacrosse against Lakeside, which should be a great game. Prep should prove a difficult challenge, but not insurmountable. Trenton Butt and Walter Buckman will have to keep pushing their offense.

Lakeside The Lions are young, and will be growing as the season goes on. Coperhaven is the senior leadership with more than double the next closest in points. Dylan Holmes and Elias Rothblatt clearly have been working in the off-season. Lakeside will have a tough one against Issaquah, and then a Maple Valley game which should be a battle. A balanced offense will help get past the tough defense “the ‘quah” brings.

Roughriders Roosevelt has entrusted all of its offensive production in Jared Grose. Knowing they gave Hale and Lakeside a run the week before, and dropped two this week to Prep and Vashon, the ‘riders should use these next two as learning experience and just play hard as they have. Both Bellevue and Issaquah will be tough match-ups.

Eastside Between Hale and Eastside, someone will come out a winner this week. Bearson cannot carry his team by himself, and the Eastside attack must add some production to the team’s offense. Eastside has to stay focused on each game and continue to work hard. A rematch against Curtis could have a different outcome if they are more composed for four quarters.

Nathan Hale Hale has thus far, counted on Springer and some Benitez to score and a young defense to support. Eastside will be hungry to break the drought as will Hale. Hale will have to find an answer to reduce opposing scoring and will have to bring their transition game to settle and possess on the other half of the field.

TOP PERFORMERS

DREW SNIDER, SR, Midfield, GARFIELD…Snider has finally broken out. Last week, Drew registered 17 points in two games. Drew is leading the league in goals and his team on an undefeated streak. Snider has an even balance between goals and assists and will have some tests this week in Bainbridge and Bellevue.

ANDREW BJORKMAN, SR, Attack, SEATTLE PREP…Bjorkman has been an underestimated attackman his high school career, but this year he has come out. He leads Prep in Scoring and total points. AB has a hat trick in each of Prep’s three games this week.

3/29 Bainbridge @ Garfield …The last two undefeated teams, who will remain? Will offense or defense be the measure of these division leaders?

3/31 Bellevue @ Garfield…Bellevue and Garfield seem very well matched to each other this season. This should be a great game to watch!
