RECAPS
DIVISION I
**Wow! What an amazing first week of the Division one season! It looks like the Mountain conference may decide the fate of the division, being the hardest conference play around between MI, Issaquah and Bellevue. Much chaos in the first major rival games, (if you missed the details, check out the MI vs. Issaquah and the Issaquah vs. Bellevue recaps) and solid performances from expected performers, Garfield and Bainbridge.
One thing I noticed, a lot of the strengths of the top seeded teams came from their defensive personnel. Mercer, Bellevue, and Issaquah all have excellent defenses, but may be disproportionate. On the other hand, Garfield has 2 of the top 5 scorers and a solid goalie in Montoya. So… lets see how everyone stacked up.
Garfield moved into the number one overall position with a two-win week with a pair of home games against Roosevelt and Prep. Defeating Roosevelt 10-1 in a fairly dominated game, Garfield wasn’t tested, but was able to put up some good numbers. In their second game against Prep, a surprising 13-3 score demonstrated they could frustrate a powerful offensive team allowing them only three goals. Prep lost starter Mike Travers to a thumb injury that has plagued his career.
Bellevue Pre-season rated the Wolverines as the Dark Horse of all the teams. With a 3-win week, Bellevue must feel good about their start in the toughest division, all of their wins are conference wins AND against two top ranked teams on the road. If Bellevue can increase their goal differential, this will demonstrate their strength in offense and defense as well. Hats off to a well played game against Issaquah. Stay tuned to see how they perform against Mercer Island at home on Wednesday night!
Issaquah Issaquah has kept it close this week with every opponent. Finishing the season with a 2-1 record after surpising MI on Opening Day, they dropped one to Bellevue and then scraped by a scrappy Maple Valley Vandal assault in overtime. Issaquah has one of the best defenses in the state, a good keeper, and a missing Yaap that I am sure will benefit from this week’s downtime.
Bainbridge Island The Spartans performed as expected maintaining their spot atop the Sound Conference with wins over Curtis and Vashon. Bainbridge lost to Lakeridge in the Dempsey Center, but again, has a young team that won two decisive conference rivals in Vashon and Curtis. Look for Bainbridge to continue to mature and improve. Their true test will be Friday against archrival Mercer Island at Bainbridge.
Mercer Island The Islanders suffered a knock against the crown last week in the first loss since 2003, but on overtime loss to a long-time division rival in the first game of the season is hardly their undoing. Mercer may have release all their pressure for a repeat of last season, but are still in the running for defense of their title. A true test this week as MI plays Bellevue at Bellevue and Bainbridge at Bainbridge.
Seattle Prep Prep performed very well in their opener with a balanced offense and defense, beating Lakeside 10-5 and putting 47 shots on Ian Holmes. They lost 2-year starter Mike Travers in the first two minutes of the Garfield game, and will have to find a way to solve that problem. They finish their first week 2-1, winning both conference games. Prep has to strategize about finishing as number two in the division and making a late season run.
Curtis Curtis dropped one game to conference leader Bainbridge, and defeated Vashon in conference play. Curtis will need wins against Bainbridge and Prep, or a sweep of Prep to get somewhere this year. Yergler and Wood have been impact players, and the team is also young. Curtis should be fun to watch this year.
Vashon After dominating their first game against Maple Valley, Vashon dropped a close one to division leader Bainbridge. Vashon has potential to be play-off bound in their first season in Division I. With a host of returning players, Vashon controls their own fate with some key wins at Prep and snatching one from the Spartans.
Maple Valley After a disappointing loss to Vashon, the Vandals came out strong against Issaquah pushing the game to double OT! Young stars Bryan Martin and Trenton Butt all demonstrated a spread assault scoring on 7 of 11 shots against Johnson. Maple Valley could also give the Sound Conference a run with all the other conference opponents left to play. The Vandals have a lot of potential.
Lakeside Lakeside split in conference play on their first week of play. Dropping the opener to Prep, Lakeside demonstrated a strong youth starting core and a solid goalie in Ian Holmes. In a battle with Roosevelt, Elliot Coperhaven tallied a hat trick, with most of the scoring occurring at the attack.
Roughriders The roughriders have a production leader in Jared Grose and they were faced with a tough first outing against Garfield, but one-goal losses to both Lakeside and Hale keep them hopeful about their future.
Eastside Suffering defeat in the first three outings against two division rivals, Eastside is going to have a long season if they cannot get some chemistry going. Their first loss to Bellevue was a strong showing in a 5-3 defeat. Both Garfield and MI losses were painful, but Olin is a sophomore, and Eastside puts most of its offensive power in midfielder and face-off man, Greg Bearson.
Nathan Hale Hale has had it tough. A close loss to Roosevelt in the season opener was disappointing. Losing their head coach for whatever reason is very difficult to rally around during the season, and losing to Bellevue and Maple Valley at home keeps the Hale Raiders at the bottom of the well this week. All-state hopeful Alec Springer leads the division in points per game, but he has to have some help.

TOP PERFORMERS
DANNY HOFFMAN, JR, Midfield, GARFIELD…points leader after week one with a hat trick in game one and 6 goals in the second as well as dominating face-offs, this junior can control the tempo of games with possession and as a scoring threat.
MIKE GERRARD, SR, Defense, ISSAQUAH...with a super performance against Mercer Island, and solid defensive effort against Bellevue, Mike continues to demonstrate his abilities and tenacity on Defense.
JIM REPASZ, SR, Attack, KLAHOWYA...Sitting strong in both Goals and assists catagories, Jim’s performance as a midfielder shows the balance a solid midfield contributor must have to lead his team.
GAMES TO WATCH
3/22 Mercer Island @ Bellevue …This will be a battle. Can Bellevue stand at the top of the division legitimately? Was the Issaquah loss a one-hit wonder for the defending state champions?
3/23 Lynnwood @ North County ... this will be the first struggle between these two powerhouses, it could be a harbinger for games to come. Don't miss the battle of offensive might.
3/24 Mercer Island @ Bainbridge …Depending on how the Wednesday game against Bellevue goes, this could prove which conference is better or which Island is better. Division #5 versus #4 should be a great game!
3/25 Curtis @ Maple Valley…Curtis and Maple Valley will battle in untested capabilities against fairly equally capable rivals. This intra-division game should help define the Sound.
