Redmond Remain Undefeated Against Whatcom
Bizarre weather conditions set the stage for the Redmond Mustangs’ and Whatcom Warriors’ April 18 bout—snow. Before the game, Redmond stood at a 4-0 overall record while the Warriors held just above .500 at 3-2. The game itself would have potentially great playoff implications, as Whatcom would need a victory to ensure their playoff future.
Redmond would get on the board first and soon jump to a two goal lead as junior Tyler Dougherty drew a slide from a Whatcom defender then passing to an open John Burke who found the back of the net. Burke’s goal would be the first of four for him as the night went on, dominating on both the offensive and defensive sides of the ball. Throughout the first quarter the Mustangs controlled the game. Their up-tempo offense seemed to have an affect on the Warriors, who as a result could not take advantage of Redmond’s few mistakes. However, mid-way through the first Whatcom’s Andrew Hoelezle was able to power through his short-stick defender, ripping a shot from ten yards out and scoring on Redmond’s John Olin. The end of the first would have Redmond in the lead.
The Mustangs continued to dominate the second as unassisted goals came from four different Redmond players. Additionally Redmond’s defense, led by junior Sean Shewey, prevented the Warriors from taking advantage of several opportunities. However, similar to his play in the first, Hoelezle was able to overpower one of his defenders, managing to get off a successful bounce shot just before a late slide.
Whatcom came out firing in the second half. Three minutes into the third quarter Daniel Hernandez was able to feed Eli Davis for a nice time and room shot bringing the score 11-4 in favor of Redmond. Along with Whatcom’s improved offense their defense began playing a more physical game. Quinton Umbaugh showed flashes of brilliance, forcing turnovers and passes. However, this third quarter effort seemed to fade away as the Mustangs shifted into a new gear. By the end of the game, Redmond finished with three different players earning hat tricks and an overall score of 17-6. Despite permitting a few goals, Olin’s ability to continuously clear the ball generated the Mustangs offense, who scored repeatedly off the transition offense started by his crisp passes. The defeat would put Whatcom’s record at 3-3, while Redmond improved to 5-0.
