D2 Scheduling

Last year in D2 regular season play it was structured so that you would play every team in your confrence twice (most confrence were about 6 teams then) and then you would play 2 random out of confrence games. I thought that worked so well but this year each confrence is only 4 teams and they still play each other twice but each confrence is matched up with another confrence and those teams play eachother each once, so that they have identicle schedules. Why the change? It was a great idea I thought.

last year's system

Last year's system was flawed in one primary way. While the regular season scheduling was great, the playoff seeding was messed up. For example, matchups were pre-set by place in specific divisions where a record could not give each team the correct opponent. In one of the three divisions, both the 1st and 2nd place teams played a 2 seed from one of the other divisions, which makes so winning 1st in that division is not necessarily better than 2nd depending on which division's 2nd place team you're matched up with.
I would like to see more regular season games on the schedule in the future though. Last year had 14; this year 10. 12 would be good...

Playoffs

and now how are is the playoff bracket going to be decided?
since the division are so small is it going to be the top team from each division or just the top 8 teams. either way it is going to be slighted since some divisions are much stronger then others.

Playoffs

It's the top 2 from each division, with four of the six first-place teams getting a bye in the first round.

really?

that seems very lopsided. with divisions like cascade and metro with really strong divisions. and then you have olympic and skagit with weaker division it doesnt seem like the top teams will get to be in the playoffs. the top 12 teams will not be in the playoffs if that is the case.

it works for now

it seems that having 12 teams in the playoffs was the goal of the whsbla, considering how many D2 teams there are now.
but with 24 teams in the league, why couldn't there have been 3 divisions of 8 teams and take the top four from each? That seems to be the best way to make it fair.
The answer is simple, a lot of d2 teams have money issues, and traveling is money. So by having 6 division of 4 teams, the goal was to regionalize it to the point that travel was not a HUGE problem among the teams. has it worked, yes, but it has created some lopsided leagues...but you can't go into a season in d2 expecting certain teams to be good and certain teams to be bad, because if history tells us, we can't always predict it, so regionization seems to be the best way to go for now.
Besides, next year it will change again as more teams join the league.

conference alignment

I was thinking 4 conferences of 6 teams rather than 6 of 4 would be the way to go. The top 2 from each conference would make it, and we have an 8 team playoff. This way less undeserving teams get in, and there can be more than the current 10 games. Each team would play the other 5 teams in their conference plus one team from either 2 or all 3 of the other conferences, leaving everyone with a 12 or 13 game schedule.

Playoff brackets explained...

at whsbla.org.
Basically top two from each confernece in, champs from strongest conferences get an automatic bye, champs from weaker conferences may get a bye based on record of whole conference.
