One weekend down, two more to go. It was the second time I had been to Portland OR, the first only being about three weeks ago. Some bridges, an NBA franchise, a lot of hills and two great mountain views. Not bad for only a 3 hour drive from my little home in West Seattle.
I was excited when I got the call to go down there and have the opportunity to try out for the NLL Portland Lumberjacks squad. A little nervous because I haven’t played in so long but anxious to see if I could still hang with some of those guys. Only time will answer that question. Aside from that there was some great talent there this weekend. Everyone knows Ryan Powell as the dominant Attackmen from Syracuse that continues to dominate and maintain being an All-Star at the MLL level but I was surprised to see him and a bevy of other players excel and compete indoor. I guess when you’re that good, it really doesn’t matter.
It is amazing how far apart the indoor and outdoor games have become. Similar to Football in that sense but in football you still have stoppage of play. In Lacrosse, that only comes after goals……exciting to watch and exhausting to play. It is great for your conditioning and works wonders on your stick skills. The margin for error is so much smaller due to limited amount of space you have to operate. The excessive amount of contact and field size (hockey rink), make it so that mistakes can be magnified. I think I did ok but like I said, only time will answer that.
Still sick, still have a cough and runny nose, still winning in fantasy football. For those of you who play here is a little peak at what the master works with, this week’s roster looked like this:
Kurt Warner QB – 30 points
Jake Delhome
Anquan Boldin WR – 26 points
Steve Smith
Larry Johnson
Maurice Jones Drew RB – 20 points
Eddie Royal
Kevin Boss
Ronnie Brown RB – 10 points
I left some out and gave you the basics just to show the balance. MJD will definitely be on my “Start no matter what” list the rest of the way. My Carolina panthers players let me down and I thought My Giants Tight End would have a TD since he has had at least one in the last three games but no, it’s ok I still won. Oh yeah, for all of you Seahawk fans I’m sorry about what Kurt and Mr. Boldin did to you, then again I might as well just apologize for the whole season you are having. Tough times up here in the Northwest.
My Giants are 9-1! and they just kicked the living @#$% out of the Baltimore Ravens. That was a sweet victory because I had to deal with Ravens fans all throughout College in Baltimore. I think I hate the Ravens more than I hate flat tires. I just had a flat tire a couple of weeks ago and it suuuuuuuuuuuuucked.
Monday night means one thing in my book. You got it men, MNF. Unfortunately I have also come to tie myself to something Monday nights. Ezells fried chicken. Good lord I think I am in love. Believe me when I say that I have tried to find and create healthy eating habits recently and have been able to stick to my veggies and vitamins fairly consistent though when I get a craving, it is bad. That is one vice that I will have to try and cut down on if I’m gonna try to play. Those baked rolls are sooo good I’m making myself crazy just thinking about them. Tonight I have no choice, two pounds of spicy strips with extra hot sauce and tartar please!!!
If you’re reading this far then you are either really bored, my boss, or interested in what I have to say? Hit me back with comments, ideas, or topics for discussion. It can be Lacrosse related or not. Politics or Music, anything that’s everything.
Keep it real, one love and God bless.

West Coast/East Coast ?
Geez, at the rate the Seattle sports scene is going, and if you make the 'Jaxs we're gonna have to become Oregon sports fans. I'm half way there having gone to UO and therefore being a die hard Duck. Since you've been in the NW for a while now and seen a fair amount of lax played out here I'm curious as to what you see as the similarities and differences from the play back east?
The one thing that jumps out
The one thing that jumps out to me the most is Experience. I have said that before and still believe it to be true. Kids on the East just start playing at a younger age as a whole and learn X's and O's as a youth.
When they become Middle Shoolers their game sense has already started to development and learning to play with what the game gives you is second nature.
The level of athlete out here is just as good as anywhere in the country, it will just take time for players to learn a skill that cannot be taught.........Experience
do you think...
that the speed of the game is also a big difference? i would have to say that there is a lot more running in between the whistles during dead ball situations with east coast ball, and more standing waiting for the call out west
I would agree 100% with you.
I would agree 100% with you. We call it "beating the whistle". A large part of that has to do with experience.
Experience
Makes sense, and its already happening. Most, if not all, of the larger programs in the greater Seattle area now have teams beginning at the 3/4 and even 1/2 level. I know West Coast Starz and even some of the local home teams have travelled back east and fared quite well against the competition. It doesn't hurt that the level of coaching around here continues to get better too, and I think that is playing a big part as well.
