Greg Mahony Featured in Seattle P.I.

A year ago, it seemed Greg Mahony was just about perfect. Then a junior at Mercer Island High School, he was a star cornerback on the football team, got great grades and was the state's second-leading scorer in lacrosse as the Islanders won their third consecutive state championship.
Colleges with lacrosse programs, primarily East Coast and Midwest schools, ignored the wunderkind from the Pacific Northwest.
Mahony, though, got more perfect.
"Athletes just peak at different times, and Greg has gotten progressively better every year," Mercer Island coach Ian O'Hearn said. "Last year he was one of the best in the state, but this year he just dominated. He is twice the player he was a year ago."
The improvement was evident first on the football field.
As a team captain, Mahony had 99 carries for 1,203 yards. He scored 18 touchdowns and even kicked 26 extra points and two field goals.
In a wild game against Seattle Prep, Mahony shattered Islanders records by rushing for 351 yards and scoring six touchdowns and 41 total points in a 41-20 win.
He wasn't even supposed to be the team's No. 1 back.
"Our two running backs got hurt and I was the only captain left. I wasn't used to carrying the ball, carrying the team -- but it was great," he said.
He earned All-KingCo honors as a cornerback and was a second-team pick on offense.
Then came lacrosse season.
