Issaquah Ousts Upstarts, Beats Overlake 11-6
After upsetting Northshore earlier in the week, the question on everyone's mind is whether or not Overlake could REALLY run with the best programs in Division I. A program with the depth and skill of an Issaquah would be their first test. With keen interest, folks from all over came to see the match-up and find out for themselves. In the end, Overlake measured themselves against a strong Issaquah team, and has some homework to do before their next big test.
Evan Greenhall strikes first in what would be a 4-0 run in the first quarter by Issaquah. Michael Hatcher struck again, scoring from midfield, followed by Fritz and youngster Duncan Hamilton, pushing Ovelake back on their heels after one at the Overlake school.
The second quarter would no different to the first, with Issaquah continuing on to an 8-0 run before Overlake had anything to say about it. Ben Director would add his score to the list making it 5-0. The another flurry of goals from Issaquah in Todd Jones, then Kevin Powers, and another from Fritz. En route to a complete domination, Overlake awakens with a goal from Devon Schmidt late in the second quarter. It would be followed by a rip by Joe Dolack, who bookends Pennington's tally for Issaquah, to end the half with a 9-3 outcome. Overlake has struggled, just to run offense, against Issaquah's defense. Issaquah has done a solid job at the face-off X as well.
Matt O'Neill pumped in the first two goals of the quarter 8 minutes, followed by a nice inside finish bouncing past Grubb at 4:04. The Eagles now 11-3. Issaquah has had possession most of the third, just working on their offensive sets. At the end of three, issaquah leads 11-3.
Overlake's Scout Tweedie-Yates finished a feed from behind brother Sky from behind the cage with under 5 minutes in the game. Scmidt would score again just a minute later on a broken set, scoring two goals in the fourth quarter. Finally, on a man-up, Sky Tweedie-Yates scores up top, with 2:19 remaining, as Overlake has a last breath before time expires. Final score, Overlake 6, Issaquah 11. On one hand, being a Division II state champion brings bigger expectations for the diminutive squad from the lilliputian school. On the other hand, a division I 2x champion has expectations of their own. Though the offense seemed in check, Issaquah's defeat of Overlake shows they are still tuning the engine as well.
