Georgetown Prep (Md.) Coach Kevin Giblin Reaches 400 Wins
It's hard to write about Kevin Giblin without first rattling off his achievements. Nine IAC titles. Two Inside Lacrosse national championships. A 400-85 record at Georgetown Prep with 200 players matriculating to Division I, including 35 high school All-Americans. That's all rather astonishing. His innate knowledge for the sport of lacrosse got him to 400 wins, but perhaps more so his fiery coaching style. Giblin is as passionate as they come and while he may apply tough love to his players, his tactics have been effective, while his ability to teach his pupils is unmatched. A surviver of colon cancer, the toughness he carries with him is evident even in his voice. His ability to outsmart officials and outcoach his counterparts is impressive, but so too is the fact that he seemingly doesn't care what outsiders say. Conversations with the Washington College (Md.) grad are full of what many people would consider the 'cold hard truth' - entertaining stuff to this particular journalist.
"Coach Giblin is a passionate, dedicated guy who has built a program essentially from scratch to prominent status today," Boys' Latin (Md.) coach Bob Shriver, who shared the Inside Lacrosse national title in 2006 with Giblin, says. "I consider him a very good friend and enjoy talking to him about lacrosse and working with him."
On a personal note, Giblin was my very first interview for Inside Lacrosse in 2009. I remember coming up to him as a nervous high school senior unsure of what to ask about his team's last-second OT win at St. Paul's and there he was asking me a multitude of questions, wanting to get to know me right off the bat.
That tidbit sums up the person he is: a genuine yet brutally honest man who simply means well, caring deeply about each kid he comes in contact with.
So, I tip my cap to Kevin on a fantastic accomplishment and wish him the best of luck going forward.
