The Sunday Stroll - Playoffs Taking Shape
May is quickly approaching which means the playoff picture is slowly becoming clearer. With some big wins, and surprising losses, teams are beginning to separate themselves from the rest of the pack. Let’s take a look back at the past few days, and a take little glimpse into the upcoming weeks:
Conference Leaders:
Division I:
KingCo Conference – Mercer Island
The Islanders are sitting pretty with an undefeated 13-0 record on the season. With impressive wins over 3 New York teams on their resume, Mercer Island has matchups with Eastside Catholic (8-1) and Skyline (7-2) looming, and then Bellevue (9-2) & Issaquah (11-1) to end the season. The conference is full of talented teams; we’ll see if Mercer Island can keep their very impressive play going forward.
Metro Conference – Eastside Catholic
The Crusaders have played well thus far all season, catching many off guard. With an 8-1 record on the season, Eastside Catholic is in control of the Metro Conference at the moment, but Seattle Academy, O’Dea, & Bainbridge are not too far behind.
Narrows Conference – Gig Harbor
Gig Harbor is undefeated so far on the season with a 6-0 record. With a veteran roster, the team looks to continue it’s dominance as they host conference opponent Stadium on Wednesday.
SPSL Conference – Tahoma
Tahoma is 6-0 in a conference that is very underrated. Emerald Ridge – the #2 team in the conference, is sitting with a 7-1 record, and Curtis – the #3 team, has an 8-2 record. Tahoma has handed both of these teams’ losses, and have put up 188 goals on the season in the process. While it’s still too close to call, a potent offense put’s Tahoma in a good position as we approach playoffs.
Wesco/NW Conference – Everett / Kamiak / Sehome-Bellingham
The Wesco/NW Conference is another very underrated conference, as you can tell by the 3-way tie. Everett, Kamiak, and Sehome-Bellingham are all 5-0 within conference, and the matchups that are soon to happen are shaping up to be intense ones. With similar offensive production and defensive play, it’ll be an entertaining upcoming weeks as these teams face-off.
Division II:
Central South Conference – Camas
With a 2-0 conference record, Camas hosts 2nd place Union next in what should be a good one. Columbia River is sitting at #3, not too far behind and still easily in striking distance of the #1 spot.
Eastern Conference – Wenatchee / Gonzaga Prep
Both Wenatchee and Gonzaga Prep are 2-0 in conference play heading into the week. Wenatchee’s offense has been producing well all season, so with a matchup looming, we’ll see if that production can continue & push Wenatchee into that lone #1 spot.
KingCo Conference – Lake Washington
Lake Washington has played well all season, and their 4-0 record is proof. The Kangs will look to prove themselves further when an always-talented Oregon Episcopal comes into town next weekend.
Metro Conference – Providence
With a big win over Overlake this past week, Providence may have just put themselves within the Top-5 heading into the week. A bout with Nathan Hale is lined up for Providence as they look to continue their streak.
Olympic Conference – Vashon / Klahowya
Vashon and Klahowya both sit at 3-2 on the season within conference play. Klahowya won the first matchup between the two, and then Vashon got revenge winning the second matchup just days later. With similar schedules to finish out the season, we’ll see who can keep their composure heading into crunch time.
SPSL Conference – Sumner
Sumner sits at 4-1 within SPSL play, but White River and Auburn Riverside are right on their heels. If Sumner can keep up their successful play, they’re in prime position for a good seed heading into the playoffs.
Wesco/NW Conference – Monroe / Lynden
Both Monroe and Lynden have 2-3 records on the season when playing conference opponents. With 1 matchup between the two to close out the regular season, clutch play over the next few weeks will decide a lot.
Division 1 Notes:
- In our first ‘Game of the Week,’ Issaquah squeaked by Skyline in overtime, 4-3, to go to 11-1 on the season. Junior keeper, Jordan Dondoyano recorded an incredible 75% save percentage on the game.
