The Sunday Stroll - Final Week
The first couple rounds of the playoffs have been nothing short of exciting! New faces looked to make their mark in the tourney, while regulars aimed to make a return to the Final Four. Let’s take a look at the past week, and breakdown the semi-final matchups!
Division I Notes:
- Mercer Island and Seattle Prep went a full 48-minutes before things were finally settled in overtime. The Panthers’ Sergei Jacobs had a hat-trick in the game, but it was the Islanders who composed themselves in the sudden-death period, walking away with the 10-9 victory to advance to the next round.
- Issaquah looked at prime form in their matchup against the Crusaders of Eastside Catholic, coming up with the 9-3 win to move on the Final Four. 4 goals from Georgetown commit, Mikey Giannopulos, and an aggressive defensive performance by the Eagles was overall too much for the Crusaders to handle, as they fell behind early and couldn’t regain their step.
- It was a battle of two-high scoring offenses Thursday night, when Skyline and Tahoma took the field. The Spartans recorded 6 different players in the goal category on their way to a 14-9 win to advance. Charlie Kurtenbach led the way with 4 goals and 4 assists. Skyline will take on Bellevue in the semi’s.
Division II Notes:
- Metro Conferences’ #1 seed, Overlake faced off with a talented White River team, Friday evening. The action went a full 48-minutes but the Owls were able to hold off junior, Gavin Hardersen and a surging White River team, 9-8 to move on to the semifinals.
- Providence not only came into the playoffs with an outstanding 11-1 record, but also the smallest team in the state – and they held their own against the #1 seed from the KingCo Conference, Lake Washington. The low scoring game went down to the last-seconds, when the Lake Washington senior, Eli Singstad, buried a loose-ball with 8-seconds left to lift the Kangs to the 4-3 win.
Final Four Matchups:
Division I:
- Skyline @ Bellevue – Skyline comes into the matchup having allowed the least amount of goals in the KingCo Conference, while Bellevue flaunts one of the highest scoring. The Spartans and Wolverines faced-off once before earlier in the season, where Bellevue squeaked by with a 10-9 overtime win.
- Issaquah @ Mercer Island – This matchup features the two highest scoring teams in the KingCo conference. This matchup also features two goalies on the All-Conference team – Issaquah’s Jordan Dondoyano on the 1st Team, and Mercer Island’s Ezra Tillinger on the 2nd. This game is sure to be an exciting one and will truly come down to the offense that can figure out how to break the mold of the others’ defense first.
Division II:
- Juanita @ Overlake – Overlake has allowed the second least amount of goals in the whole state this season, allowing just 63 in 12 games. On the other side, Juanita has had it’s ups and downs this season on offense, but their ‘up’ games have truly been exceptional ones – flaunting 7 games with at least 12 goals scored. This is the first time the two have faced each other all season.
- Lake Washington @ Sumner – Sumner has looked impressive all season, going 11-2 in conference play, but on the flipside, Lake Washington has been just as productive, going 9-3 within a tough KingCo conference. Both teams have deep rosters and are completely capable of offensive production, so this game is sure to be full of fireworks.
We’ve made it! 3 months later, we’re down to the Final Four. With just a week left in the season, we’ll see who will be able to dig down and pull out the clutch plays when it matters to claim the State Championship!
