Newport vs. Hellgate (MT) - Game Report

MERCER ISLAND – It truly was the battle of the Knights in this one, as Hellgate (MT) and Newport battled their way to an overtime bout Saturday afternoon at the Northwest Invitational.

It was a slow 1st quarter, with the first goal coming at the 6:39 mark from Newport’s Weston Heuker off a fast-break crease finish. Hellgate would get two of their own, including one with under 30-seconds left to send them into the second quarter with a 2-1 lead.

Hellgate’s Jameson Morrison opened up the scoring in the 2nd with an inside drive and finish to become the 4th player in Hellgate history to reach 100 points – 1 of his 3 goals on the afternoon. Newport answered with a goal from junior Dalton Voeller on the crease, but the impressive goalie play on Hellgate’s side held the Newport offense to just 2 goals on the half, sending Hellgate into the third with a 4-2 lead.

Newport's quick ball movement in the 3rd quarter opened up opportunities, as the team put up 3 goals, including a late one from Ian Weiss off a clean drive from X to reclaim the lead for the Knights.

The 4th quarter saw a lot of back and forth action with Newport’s Ian Weiss and Hellgate’s Justin Lane both dropping 2 goals to even the score at 8-8. It was Newport senior Ben Weibel who sent the crowd into frenzy with a clutch goal with under a minute left to even the score, ultimately sending it to overtime.

In sudden-death, Hellgate freshman Justin Lane found open space and delivered the finishing touch to give the Knights the 9-8 overtime victory over Newport.
