2014 State Championship Preview
The 2014 boys’ lacrosse finals are all set for this Saturday. The D1 championship game pits KingCo rivals Bellevue against Issaquah while the D2 championship game sees King’s Way play Seattle Academy (SAAS).
In the D1 game, Bellevue looks for their third consecutive state title and their fourth in five years. A three-peat has not happened in this state since Mercer Island’s run from 04-06. Issaquah returns to the big game for the first time since winning back to back titles in 2008 and 2009.
Bellevue and Issaquah battled just over a month ago in a back and forth but low scoring affair with the Eagles coming out on top 6-5. The Championship game should prove to be another great game between these two perennial powers.
Both teams battled to earn their place in the title game. Issaquah traveled to Tahoma to take on the Bears and had to come from behind in the fourth quarter scoring 4 goals in the final frame to take a 9-8 win. Bellevue built a big lead only to have a well assembled Eastside Catholic squad scratch their way back to even it in the fourth quarter. Eric Haehl scored the game winner for the Wolverines with just 9 seconds left in regulation to push Bellevue into the title game.
The D2 title game pits the Metro champs Seattle Academy (formerly Garfield) in their third straight title game versus Kings’ Way (Vancouver, WA) representing the Central-South division and in their first state championship appearance. Both teams are looking for their first State title.
Seattle Academy jumped out fast building a 5-0 lead after the first quarter and never looked back as they cruise to a 13-4 win at Vashon. King’s Way battled with the Owls in the first quarter, with Overlake staying close, 3-2 but the Crusader’s proved too much as they built the score to an 8-4 lead at half and finished going away 16-7.
D2 Championship game starts at 3:30pm. The D1 Championship game starts at 6:00pm, both games will be played at Seattle Memorial Stadium.
