WHSBLA Playoffs - Quarterfinals
Tonight the 2016 WHSBLA Playoffs continue with three of the four Quarterfinals for Division I and will pick up again on Saturday with one more DI game and all four Division II match-ups. Let’s take a peek at all of the weekend’s pairings as 16 teams fight to earn a spot in the Semifinals.
Division I
Friday
Mercer Island (15-5) at Eastside Catholic (15-2) - 5:30 p.m.
The weekend of Quarterfinal action kicks off with the defending champions, Mercer Island, on the road against the top seed in the Metro, Eastside Catholic. Last weekend Coach Chris Long’s Islanders went on the road to Gig Harbor and came home with a 17-5 win which paired them with Coach Chuck Goodman’s Crusaders fresh off a 8-3 home win over neighbor Eastlake. Mercer Island is 9-1 all-time against Eastside Catholic, but the teams didn’t meet in the regular season.
Skyline (14-6) at Bainbridge (14-4) - 7 p.m.
The KingCo fifth seed, Skyline, now gets to take the ferry ride to Bainbridge Island after a 9-8 comeback on Tahoma in the first round and a 16-7 win by Bainbridge over Woodinville. Coach Jack Visco’s Spartans haven’t run into Coach Sam Huston’s Spartans in 2016. Bainbridge outweighs the all-time series, 9-1, with the 2015 meeting serving as the first win for Skyline, a 14-3 win.
Issaquah (17-4) at Kamiak (15-1) - 7 p.m.
Coming in hot off wins over league rivals, Bellevue, Eastlake, Skyline and Mercer Island, KingCo #2 seed Issaquah carried their momentum to knock off Emerald Ridge with a 16-10 victory. The win sends them on to meet Coach Mike Harlow’s Kamiak Knights, putting together 15 straight wins since losing in their first game to Eastside Catholic, with their most recent win in the first round over Seattle Prep, 16-4. The last, and only, matching of the two teams falls back to 2013 with an Issaquah victory.
Saturday
O’Dea (8-5) at Bellevue (18-3) - 6 pm..
The DI Quarterfinals wrap up when Coach Drew Snider’s O’Dea Fighting Irish cross Lake Washington to take on the top-ranked Bellevue Wolverines, coached by John Baumann. The Irish, Metro’s #3 seed, earned their way into the game with a 10-8 win at Sehome-Bellingham while the KingCo #1 seed, the Wolverines, stayed home to top Stanwood, 20-3. Although the two teams didn’t meet in 2016, Bellevue took down O’Dea in 2015 to earn the 1-0 all-time lead.
Division II
Saturday
White River (11-6) at Union (13-4) - 12 p.m.
Coach John O’Connor’s White River Hornets, competing in their second season, will kick off the DII Quarterfinals on the road against Coach Tim Goodspeed’s Union Titans. After losing their first three games, Union won 13 of their last 14 battles, recently beating West Seattle 20-5 to move on. White River, the SPSL #1 seed, took down Vashon 17-6 last round to earn their chance against the Cen-South’s top seed. The first ever meeting between the two teams fell over the first week of April with White River coming out on top, 9-8.
Richland (14-4) at Klahowya (15-1) - 1 p.m.
Undefeated in DII, Coach Rob Hawley’s Klahowya Eagles earned the Olympic #1 seed and continued their roll with a 10-9 win over Inglemoor in Round 1. The Cen/South #2 seed, Richland, coached by Chad Mitchell, moved on to meet Klahowya from a 11-3 win against Central Valley. Although both programs have been competing for quite sometime, the two have yet to go head to head.
Gonzaga Prep (12-2) at Liberty (12-7) - 5 p.m.
Coach Ryan Kelly’s Liberty Patriots are also undefeated in DII and their winning streak earned them KinCo’s #1 seed. They’ll host Coach Chris Shogan’s Gonzaga Prep Bullpups, coming in from Spokane with only one DII loss on their record and sitting in the Eastern #1 seed. The Bullpups topped Overlake, 15-14, to face Liberty, coming off a, 16-3, win over Archbishop Murphy. Saturday’s game will be the first meeting between the programs.
Shorecrest (8-5) at SAAS (11-4) - 6 p.m.
The final game of the weekend pairs Coach Scott Pattison’s Seattle Academy Cardinals at home against Coach Steve Weaver’s Shorecrest Fighting Scots. The NW Division’s top seed, Shorecrest, took down Bonney Lake 12-7 last round to get shot at the Metro’s top seed, SAAS. Winning their last six games, the Cardinals continued the streak with a 8-6 win against North Kitsap in Round 1. In their three seasons as a program, Seattle Academy has yet to meet Shorecrest, now in their fifth year.
