About The Team
Our Coach: Christiana DelloRusso, Della, Seattle Womens Club Lacrosse player extraordinaire, teaches us everything we need to know.
The Competition: The Blackfins play mostly other club teams in the Northwest from Portland to Victoria, B.C.
Games: During the season (Mid March to early June), we typically have games every other week. Well play 1-2 games mostly on Saturdays , either in the Seattle area. We also compete in 1-2 out of town tournaments, traveling for the weekend and playing lots of lacrosse.
Practice: Practices are held once a week, beginning Feb 8th until the end of the season in May. Practices are held Tuesday nights, 6:30pm, at Greenlake track (location may change). We also will have two Sunday afternoon scrimmages planned prior to the beginning of the Season
Finances: Team dues are approximately $100 plus an additional $45 that goes to US Lacrosse, the national governing body that provides insurance, organization, etc. The $100 Blackfin fees cover tournament entry fees, paying referees, and fields.
In addition to this fee, transportation to games (we usually carpool), lodging at tournaments, and the obligatory after-practice beer are another expense. When we travel, we definitely go cheap.
Equipment: Every player is responsible for supplying her own equipment, but thankfully there is not much! Here are the essentials:
A womens lacrosse stick (of course!). Listed on this site are places to buy, and the sales people should be able to help you find the right one. Prices range from $40-100.
Cleats. For all you soccer players, you know that grass field in the Northwest can get pretty slippery! You can get by with sneakers, but trust me, its embarrassing to be on the verge of an impressive shot only to fall on your butt. Soccer shoes work perfectly, and you can buy them at any sports store for as low as $20
Mouth Guard. Referees check for this before every game, and you cant play without them (and its not something you want to borrow from your teammate). Most sports stores will have them for $3-$5.
Eye Goggles (Required) With this season womens lacrosse now requires Eye Protection for all players. Womens Lacrosse is a non-contact sport but like all sports with
Gloves (optional). While womens lacrosse is technically non-contact, things happen and your hands can get caught in the middle. Womens gloves (not the big bulky ones for men) are available where you buy your stick, and many players wear them. They also help in the beginning of the season and its still cold out. $30-40.
Running legs. Any size, shape, and speed, as long as theyre ready to go. For some reason that 20 year-old college junior I was guarding last season didnt listen when I asked her to please walk for the rest of the game.
Age Range: Whether youre just out of high school or your children just graduated, youll fit in with this team. Last year our youngest player was 23 and our oldest, well, wasnt at liberty to say. Tell your friends about us too!
Contact Us: If you are interested in playing for Blackfin next season (2005), please contact us. We can answer any questions you have, even if its a basic question about the sport. We have a great team and are determined to have fun while continuing to improve in the sport. Come out for one of the meet the team practices and see if its your thing. No commitment required.
Wed love to have you!
