Seattle Women, undefeated this weekend... keeping the Western States title in Seattle, where it rightly belongs

The Seattle Women's lacrosse team beat the D1 veteran-packed San Francisco West squad 7-5 to win the coveted 2005 Western States Championship at Stanford University this weekend.  Seattle shined in their skills and teamwork to secure the win in the 9am game against UCLA in the semi-finals.  Seattle went undefeated the entire weekend beating out such teams as Chico State, Cal Poly Alumni and San Diego State University.

Game recap provided by Lorrie McKay,

Game 1 - SW v San Diego State University (12 - 3).  Our fist game of the tournament was played on that nasty old turf field.  SDSU had about... oh, easily 36 players warming up when the mixed-bag of Seattle 17 meandered onto the field... pealing off un-matching sweats and what-not to reveal our new black uniforms.   My favorite point in this game was in the second half after Seattle put it in the net ....again... a plaintive wail was heard, far and wide, from the SDSU coach, "Why are they getting open!?!?!?!"

Game 2 - SW v Chico State (10 - 5).  Off the hideous turf and into the grass... this game was a bit strange, sort of in slow-motion really.  The quote of the game came from the timer/scorer's table, "Wow, these older women from Seattle are showin' the Chico girls a thing or two."   That's right!  Buh-bye.

Game 3 - SW v Cal-Poly Alum (9-4)  The thinking was that this game was going to be competitive because Cal-Poly has been the "supah stah," karate-kickin' team at nationals.  And these were the Alum.   Well evidently, someone stole their mo-jo...  because SW finished them and headed off to watch the men's semi-final, final four basketball at the bar.

Game 4 - SW v Pomona Pitzer (many-few) This game was the first played on Sunday morning after Comfort Inn waffles, brown-water, Raisin Bran, tiger-balm and Advil... Seattle was warmed-up and fired-up.  Meanwhile, PP had barely stretched... So, from the starting horn, they didn't know what they were in for... and at the ending horn, they didn't know what had hit 'em.    Ka-pow!

Game 5 - SW v UCLA "A" (10-3ish)  This game started out kind of confusing.  There were no umpires... anywhere!  Apparently, it was "picture time" for the tournament umpires, even though the starting horn had sounded.  Every field had both teams in position and ready.... but no umpires!  Upon seeing the timer/scorer about to set the draw without any umpires around, on-field captain Maggie stepped-up, adjusted her goggles, cleared her throat, and recommended that we not start until we had some stripes controlling the play.  Everyone was equally inconvenienced for about 5 minutes... until "picture time" had ended.  And while UCLA was hungry... the game proved to be a Seattle feeding-frenzy, even with a big bag of bagels in our bellies and with <gasp> Schwa coming out of the game first half with a pulled quad.  Yikes!

Championship Game - SW v San Francisco West (7-5)  After watching an inspirational Whitman OT win, brave-heart style... Seattle was ready to defend our title. This game, from start to finish, was a perfect display of team work.  Seattle came out fast... scoring a couple of goals in the first few minutes.  Kim and the defensive team took the shape of a rock solid wall of denial!  The mid-fielders established themselves as a well-oiled machine, moving the ball from one end to the other and supporting both defense and offense.  And the forward line... bless their little hard-working, attacking selves. At the close of the first half, it was 4 - 0, with umpire Coco-Crisp presenting on-field captain Maggie with a happy little yellah card for delivering an impressive slash.    Second half started with a splash of cold water in our collective faces, as San Francisco West came out of the gate mad-as-hornets, tying it up... 4 - 4!   Okay... "Game on!"... Seattle kicked it up a notch too and lo and behold, victory was ours.... and our favorite cameo center from Montana showed us how they open beer-bottles while fly-fishin' in the land of big sky... with their teeth! Double Yikes!
