August
21, 2002: This
week, Seattle Junior
Hockey Association invited Nate Lazenga out to
introduce the sport of lacrosse to a group of young
hockey players. The hockey players were
participating in the Pacific Challenge Hockey
College, a weeklong hockey camp. The players were
both male and female and ranged in age from 9 to 14.
Only a few young players had any previous lacrosse
experience, this was a great opportunity to reach
players of a similar sport. Basic skills were
introduced to the players, such as cradling,
catching, passing, shooting, dodging, and one on one
defense. By the end of the 3-day clinic, there was a
4 on 4, low-contact, scrimmage.
The players had a great time
and there were many questions on how to get involved
and play on local lacrosse teams. Hopefully, this
clinic will increase the growing popularity of
lacrosse even further in the Puget Sound area, and
the Seattle Junior Hockey Association and the
lacrosse community can build a future alliance,
growing from each others success.
