Vandals' Alum Brian Johnson Named Sonoma's "Rookie of the Year"

Maple Valley, May 21: Former Maple Valley Lacrosse Club standout attackman Brian Johnson has been named "Rookie of the Year" by the Sonoma State University Seawolves. Turned midfielder at SSU, Johnson was a key newcomer helping the Seawolves to a 15 - 2 overall record and a second place finish in the Western Collegiate Lacrosse League "A" North Division, a #3 seed and a semifinal berth finish in the USLIA 2003 Championship Tournament, and a third place national ranking. Johnson had an outstanding freshman year playing in 17 regular season games scoring 10 goals (on 20 shots for a .500 shooting percentage) and 5 assists for 15 total points. Seeing action in the 2003 USLIA Championship Tournament held May 7 - 10 in St. Louis, Missouri, Brian scored 2 goals in SSU wins over #14 Cal Poly SLO and #11 Simon Fraser University before being shut down in their semifinal loss to the #2 seed and eventual champion Colorado State. Johnson will team up next season with former Vandals teammate Travis Cornelison to lead the Seawolves in their hunt for regular and post-season championships in the WCLL and USLIA.
