Over the weekend of September 15th and 16th,
the Eugene Lacrosse Club in Eugene Oregon, hosted its 11th annual
Lacrosse Tournament. As
always, the tournament coincided with the Eugene Celebration, an
annual party were the whole town gets down.
There were bands to suit most any taste, fire dancers, good
food and beer, and lots and lots of art.
Unfortunately, due to terrorist actions at the
World Trade Center and the Pentagon, the festivities this year were
subdued and the idea of having a standard tournament just didnt
feel right. As a result the championship games were canceled and a more
simple, round robin format was utilized.
The game of lacrosse was played for the sake of lacrosse,
nothing more, nothing less.
On a brighter note, the weather was good and
the tournament was renamed after its founding father, Tom Foster. Tom has been playing the great game of lacrosse for over 40
years! (Thats right, all wooden sticks, no face masks!)
He began playing with the Eugene squad in the mid eighties
and came up with the idea of a fall tournament back in 1990.
He was the heart, soul and vision of Eugene Lacrosse for many
years. Finally, at the
age of 55, he decided to hang up his stick and retire from the game
he loves. It only
seemed fitting to pay tribute to the man that had done so
much. In addition to
naming the tournament after him, the entire Eugene team wore jerseys
with his soon to be retired number seven on the back.
This year, the tournament featured 10 teams
from the Pacific Northwest and British Columbia.
The teams that participated this year are as follows: Squamish Nation (North Vancouver, BC), Steelhead (Mt.Vernon, WA) , Old Growth (Seattle), College Inn
(Seattle), Tentawon (Bellevue), WA), Huron (Tacoma, WA) Multanomah
(Portland, OR), Bigfoot (Portland, OR) Fosters (Eugene) Eugene
(Eugene)
All
teams reported having a good time and plan on returning next year.

festivities please contact Dave Shinnlinger at [email protected].
