What an amazing run.
Few places in sports history are seven consecutive years of title held
by any one team. Matt Sauri's Team Green held that title until
the 2004 Men's Summer League Championship game. Until last year,
summer league was a combination of both High School players and
college or club players all playing together in the same league.
After the growth expanded over such a short time, the league expanded
and grew the men's summer league to six teams in its own right.
This year was no different. Captains got together on draft day
to make their selections to see who would put together the unit to
take the title, hotly contesting each player. While half of each
team is drafted, the other half is assigned to ensure parity.
With the stage set in a battle over big shooting guns between
Seabiscuit and Team Green, a playoff and championship featuring those
two seemed inevitable.
The playoffs are not for
the timid, to win the championship, a team must play and win three
games in one week. Playoffs and championships are consecutive
nights and often battles of attrition. As we finished lining the
fields, both teams seemed ready and pumped to play. Team Green
beat FunkyMonkey for their championship spot, while Seabiscuit beat
Kelley's Heros for their shot at the title. Both came to win the
championships. With creases lined, nets fastened the heavens
opened up as one would expect of the stuff of legends. The
opening face-was no different, and the battle was underway.
By the end of the first
quarter, 'Biscuit had taken an unanswered lead, 2-0. Sauri
rallied Green in the huddle with calm patience. Both teams
moving the ball well, 'Biscuit using the 2-2 and Green the 1-4.
Duke Pham, kept a rally from happening in a blazing second quarter
stopping all but one ball. At half-time, the score was 5-1.
These games run 20-minute
running time for 4-quarters. much of which was complete
downpour. Though the rain was tough, the level of play didn't
diminish. New legs showed up late in the game for Green, but for
the Seabiscuit Juggernaut, new legs would not be the answer.
with a few ticks left on the clock, aScotty Carlin's Seabiscuit had
unseated a streak which may never be matched, 10-6. Duke Pham
was awarded the game MVP for stellar goalie play.
Having won a well-played
game, Seabiscuit is now the reigning Walax.com Summer League
champions... waiting anxiously to emblazon their name on the Trophy of
Champions. Next year, I have no doubt we will see more of the
same. In fact, the teams will increase to 8 as two masters teams
will be forming to compete! See you there!
