GAMBIER, Ohio Feb 25, 2006-- Powered by a balanced offensive
attack Saturday, the Kenyon College Lords lacrosse team had eight different
goal-scorers and defeated the Denison University Big Red, 15-11. Luke
Larson, High School All-American from Mercer Island, WA led the scoring assault
with 3 goals and 2 assists. The win for the Lords was their first over the
Big Red since the 1977 season.
Both teams came out firing in the first quarter, but it was Kenyon that took a
6-5 advantage into the second stanza. Play was a bit more cautious in the second
half and the Lords went into the break with a slim 9-7 lead. Kenyon outscored DU
3-1 in the third quarter, eventually pulling away for the four-goal victory. The
Big Red came back with their only goal late in the third period, as Ted Douglass
found the back of the Lords' net. But it was too little, too late as the Lords'
defense held the Big Red's potent offensive attack in check from that point on.
In 47 meetings with the Lords, this just the second time in school history the
Big Red have been on the losing end of things and the first time since the 1977
season.
Denison was led in scoring by freshman Dan Maude (Wayne, Pa./The Haverford
School) who finished with five goals and one assist. Ted Douglass (Englewood,
Colo./Kent Denver) scored four goals and had one assist. The remainder of the
scoring went to first-year Nate Hall (Columbus, Ohio/Upper Arlington) who scored
one goal and had three assists. Chris Chandler (Kent, Ohio/Roosevelt) also added
a goal. Sophomore goalie Alex Baruch (Richmond, Va./St. Christophers) had 11
saves in the cage.
Kenyons Charlie Floeckher also recorded 11 saves in goal for the Lords. The
Lords' scoring barrage was led by Larson, who had three goals and two assists.
Harvey, O'Neill, and Nate Pritchard (Narbeth, PA/Lower Merion) were among five
Kenyon players that tallied two goals each. Pritchard and Larson, along with
Catlin and junior Sean Wheeler (Darien, CT/Brunswick School), also chipped in
with two assists. Fueled by goals from Brad Harvey (Winchester, MA/Winchester),
Sean O'Neill (Darnestown, MD/Bullis) and one more from Larson, Kenyon's lead
grew to 12-7.
Kenyon was 3-of-6 in extra man situations and Denison was 2-of-6. Denison
committed seven penalties good for 6 minutes of penalty time while the Lords
committed six fouls for 5:30 of penalty time.
