The Sunday Stroll - Playoff Picture
May has arrived which means that it truly is time to turn our focus on the playoffs! These next few weeks will decide the fate of many teams while rankings will constantly be shifting with every win and loss. Let’s get to the key happenings of this past week:
Division 1 Notes:
- Mercer Island and Skyline faced off in our first ‘Game of the Week,’ under the lights on Friday night. The Islanders continued to do what they do best all season, and that is score, dropping the Spartans 14-7 to remain a perfect 17-0 on the season. The loss was just Skyline’s 3rd of the year, putting them at 11-3 on the season.
- In a battle of two teams with undefeated conference records, Bellevue and Issaquah went down to the wire Saturday afternoon, sending the game to sudden-death overtime. In OT, Justin Angelel put away the game winner with a top-shelf bullet to lead the Wolverines to the 8-7 victory. Bellevue faces conference leader, Mercer Island on May 4th for the #1 spot in the KingCo Conference.
- David Funes and Riley Johnson both scored hat-tricks for Seattle Academy on the way to a convincing 9-3 win over O’Dea. The win keeps the team in a two-way tie with Eastside Catholic for the #1 spot in the Metro Conference.
- The state’s top scoring team, Tahoma, continued its pursuit for conference excellence with a 16-7 win over Emerald Ridge, Saturday afternoon. Dakoda Barger had 5 goals for the Bears, moving them to 9-0 in SPSL conference play.
Division II Notes:
- In our Division II ‘Game of the Week,’ we focused on an Eastern Conference matchup of Wenatchee and Gonzaga Prep. A 5-goal 1st quarter was too much for the Bullpups to climb back from, and Wenatchee walked away with the 9-7 victory behind the production of Nathan McCarthy and Cole Helton.
- Providence improved to 10-0 on the season with dominant wins over West Seattle (20-10), Garfield (19-1), and Franklin (19-0). The team looks to remain undefeated as they prepare to face Inglemoor and Overlake to close out the 2015 campaign.
- Sumner has remained behind the scenes all season, but their 8-2 record is something that should not be overlooked. With wins over White River, and most recently Auburn Riverside, Sumner may be a team to watch as we get closer to playoff time. The squad is currently 1st in the SPSL Division II, putting up 130 goals on the season.
