The Sunday Stroll - Midway
As we leave behind yet another Spring Break, we can begin to look forward to the midway point of the season. But first, we’ll recap the week that was – one filled with many out of conference games, and even some out of state games. Without further ado, let’s get to it!
Division I & II Power Rankings:
Division I:
1. Mercer Island – The Islanders have done nothing but impress all season, handling all of their opponents. 3 wins this past week over in New York only bolster their case.
2. Issaquah – With wins over Oregon power, Lincoln, and two big wins down in Arizona over Spring Break, the Eagles are currently sitting solid at #2.
3. Bellevue – Bellevue is right on pace as usual with Mercer Island and Issaquah. With matchups against Mercer Island and Eastside Catholic looming, the Wolverines will look to prove that they are the top team in the state.
4. Skyline – Skyline is a team that doesn’t get too much press, but their great play this season has them at #4 for the week. The Spartans have wins over skilled Faith Lutheran (NV) and Centennial (NV) teams on their resume, as well as 2 wins in Maryland this past week. Their only loss was a 1 goal decision to Bellevue.
5. Eastside Catholic – The Crusaders have been quiet, but impressive thus far in the season. With wins over Juan Diego (UT) and Palo Verde (NV), as well as a very good Claremont team from up north, Eastside Catholic sits at #5 for the week.
Division II:
1. Providence – Providence is undefeated so far on the season, with a 5-0 record. With a talented Overlake team coming up on the schedule, Providence will look to prove their standing as #1 in Division II.
2. Lake Washington – The Kangs have suffered only 1 loss on the season, dropping the rest of their opponents pretty handily, including Division I squad, Newport.
3. White River – The Hornets have been impressive on the season, suffering their only loss to Curtis. Their resume include wins over a talented Vashon squad, and an overtime victory over always tough Auburn-Riverside.
4. Overlake – The Owls have dominated their competition so far this season. Though, the opponents have not been the most competitive, allowing just 3 goals through 3 games is always impressive. With Providence next up on the schedule, we’ll see if Overlake is for real.
5. Gonzaga Prep – All the way over in Spokane, the Bullpups are undefeated on the season, dropping a talented Richland team to start off the season.
Division 1 Notes:
- In our first ‘Game of the Week,’ Bellevue travelled south to face a tough Centennial team from Nevada. The Wolverines continued to state their dominance, handling the Bulldogs in a 16-4 romp.
- Mercer Island flew out east to face some talented New York high school teams. The Islanders made sure to represent Washington State well out there, leaving the Big Apple with 3 big W’s - downing Lakeland-Panas 18-7, Shenendehowa 14-11, and Shaker 14-8 in the process.
- Issaquah continues to impress behind the scenes, posting a 9-1 record with their only loss coming to a very skilled Coronado team out of Nevada. Over break, the Eagles posted a 3-0 record, dropping Desert Vista and Gilbert in Arizona, and dominating Bainbridge on Friday, 14-2. Mikey Giannopulos continues to impress, putting up 5 goals in the bout.
Division II Notes:
- In our Divison II ‘Game of the Week,’ Everett proved to the state that their dominant start was no hoax, downing a Roosevelt 25-1, and a good Burlington-Edison team, 15-2. Everett has allowed just 12 goals on the season thus far. With some good competition soon approaching, we’ll see if Everett can keep their streak going.
- Richland and Southridge battled it out in an close one last Wednesday. Tanner Ricketts and Hayden Ruckhaber both had hat-tricks in the 11-9 win for Richland, putting the team at 4-3 on the season, and atop the Central-South Conference.
