Mercer Island vs. Woodinville - Game Report

MERCER ISLAND – The Islanders proved to the state that their undefeated 8-0 start to the 2015 season was no hoax after defeating a previously undefeated Woodinville squad, 16-8 Saturday night at Mercer Island High School.

It was an exciting back-and-forth game in the first quarter with both teams exchanging points. Senior Evan Condon had himself a game, racking up 5 goals including an absolute ripper from the top of the box with under 25-seconds left in the first quarter to tie things up at 3. Woodinville’s Alexander Blue answered just seconds later with a goal of his own to send the Falcon’s into the break with a 4-3 lead over the Islanders.

The dominant offense of Mercer Island appeared in the 2nd quarter, putting away 6 goals including a pair from the junior midfielder, Ian Kelly-Hedrick. On the flip side, the Islander’s aggressive defensive play and well placed checks made things tough for the Woodinville offense, resulting in a scoreless quarter.

In the second-half, the Falcon’s were able to get things going on offense. Freshman long-pole Jake Baillie took it straight through the Islander’s defense, burying one early in the third to get the Woodinville faithful hyped up. Mercer Island’s Jack Counihan had himself a 4-goal performance, including 2 back-to-back in the fourth within minutes of each other to separate the two teams on the scoreboard.

In 36 minutes of play, Falcon’s keeper Matthew Corbin made some incredible point-blank saves, including several on the crease but 7 goals from a potent Mercer Island offense was too much to handle, and the Islanders ran away with the big W to stay undefeated on the season.

Woodinville (6-1) hosts Bothell (3-3) on April 8th, while the Islanders (9-0) head out east to face Lakeland-Panas HS (NY).
