WHSBLA Playoffs - Semifinals Preview
The same weekend the NCAA decided the Final Four grouping for Memorial Day Weekend, the WHSBLA Quarterfinals were held across the Evergreen State in order to iron out the four teams who would move on to the next round from both divisions. It’s a new week and now we can look ahead to Wednesday night when all eight of Washington’s semifinals are set to be held. When the dust settles, only four teams will be moving toward the two championships, here’s what we know about the eight remaining squads.
Division 1
Bainbridge Spartans (14-4) at Bellevue Wolverines (18-3) - 7:30 p.m.
The opening showdown of Semifinal action kicks off in under the lights in Bellevue with the top-seeded Wolverines hosting the Bainbridge Spartans making the ferry trip over from the Island. Bainbridge, the Metro #2 seed, earned their right to the Final Four with a recent 14-9 victory over Skyline after dropping Woodinville,16-7, in the first round. The KingCo #1 seed, Bellevue, has cruised through the postseason so far with a 20-3 win over Stanwood, before taking down O’Dea, 14-1, on Saturday. The two schools didn’t have the opportunity to meet in the regular season, yet Bellevue leads the all-time record, 7-6, winning their last five meetings.
Issaquah Eagles (17-4) at Eastside Catholic Crusaders (15-2) - 8 p.m.
Game two from Division 1 pairs the KingCo #2 seed, Issaquah, with Eastside Catholic, the #1 spot from the Metro, for a shootout in Sammamish. The visiting Eagles were challenged by Emerald Ridge in round one, but came out ahead 16-10, before heading out on the road to break down Kamiak, 12-5, punching their ticket to the Final Four. After a dominant regular season, the Crusaders locked up the top seed in the Metro which matched them against Eastlake in round one, where they came out on top, 8-3. The win led them to a showdown they handled cleanly against Mercer Island, earning a 12-6 victory and trip to the Semifinals. Like the Bainbridge/Bellevue game, these two programs have yet to meet in 2016, giving another unclear look at how the two teams stack up. The all-time record favors heavily for Issaquah, with the Eagles leading the series 9-1.
Division 2
Gonzaga Prep Bullpups (12-2) at Union Titans (12-2) - 8 p.m.
The top team in the Eastern region, Gonzaga Prep, drew two of Seattle’s Eastside teams to kick off the postseason. The Bullpups took on Overlake in Spokane first and barely got by with a 15-14 win before squeaking by KingCo’s top-seed Liberty, 12-11, to earn their spot against the Union Titans. Winning their last nine regular season games, the Titans locked up the Cen-South #1 seed, leading them to take down West Seattle, 20-5, before working past White River, 14-10, to send themeless to the Final Four. Keeping true to the blind date theme, Union and Gonzaga Prep have yet to meet through the history of the two programs.
Richland Bombers (13-4) at Seattle Academy Cardinals (10-4) - TBD
An excellent season for the Cardinals earned Seattle Academy the #1 seed in the Metro, which pinned them against North Kitsap first. They came out with a 8-6 victory in round one, leading them to a meeting with Shorecrest in the Quarterfinals, winning the game,11-6, to move on for a clash with the Cen-South #2 seed, Richland. Richland forced their way into the Semifinals with a 11-3 win over Central Valley, followed by a convincing 12-4 beating of Klahowya, serving up their only Division II loss of 2016. Now the Bombers are set to square off on Wednesday with the Cardinals, and just like the Gonzaga/Union battle, it will be the first ever meeting between the two programs.
