WALAX Boys High School Lacrosse Ranking - Week 2

Now two full weeks into the season, each and every team in Washington State has at least one game under their belts, some have as many as 5 finishes behind them at this point. With some of the dust starting to settle, we’re ready to take a look at the Division I and Division II fields to create some order amongst the chaos.

Teams are ranked based on their 2016 performances, head-to-head results and goal ratios. In the event of a close decision, teams with the most convincing wins against higher ranked teams were given the higher position.

Division I

1. Bellevue (2-0)

2. Mercer Island (2-0)

3. Issaquah (3-1)

4. Woodinville (3-1)

5. Eastside Catholic (5-1)

6. Eastlake (2-1)

7. Bainbridge (4-0)

8. Peninsula (3-0)

9. Stanwood (2-0)

10. Skyline (2-1)

Both of our 2015 Championship Game participants are off in the right direction. #1 Bellevue slipped past #2 Mercer Island for the top spot by taking down #4 Woodinville, 16-5, while the Islanders were only able to get by unranked Juanita, 11-5.

The big game of the coming weekend has to be #3 Issaquah’s visit to #4 Woodinville, which should give us a clear look at how the Top 4 will shake out. Another big loss for the Falcons would likely drop them out of the top half of the polls, but a win, or loss by close margin, will keep Coach Corrigan’s group on the coattails of #1 & #2, despite an 11-goal loss to Bellevue in Week 1.

Another big match-up is going down on Saturday night in Sammamish when #10 Skyline heads to #6 Eastlake for the Battle of Awareness & Strength. The highly anticipated east side showdown is shaping into a community celebration under the lights, featuring live music, plenty to eat and local vendors. Eastlake is collecting a $5 admission, with all event proceeds going directly to the National Alliance on Mental Illness - Seattle. Opening face-off is set for 8 pm, the clash of two Top 10 teams is guaranteed to be entertaining, plus your attendance supports a much greater cause.

Division II

1. Liberty (4-1)

2. Vashon (3-0)

3. Klahowya (3-0)

4. Gonzaga Prep (3-0)

5. Seattle Academy (3-1)

6. Shorecrest (3-0)

7. Richland (2-0)

8. Overlake (2-1)

9. White River (2-1)

10. West Seattle (1-2)

The top half of Division II has been impressive so far, to say the least. The season is still young, so many teams have yet to face a major test. On the other hand, one team in particular is already raising some eyebrows. After finishing 3-11 in 2015, #1 Liberty took the field in 2016 under a new head coach, Ryan Kelly, and have already captured a 4-1 record. The Patriots most notable performance came with a signature, 11-9, victory over the defending DII Champs, Lake Washington. Their only loss came by 6 goals to an impressive Juanita group, now competing in DI. If that’s how they’re stacking up with DI teams, Liberty is going to be the team to beat this season.

In the Narrows/Olympic Conference, Vashon (3-0) and Klahowya (3-0) are hip to hip at the top of the rankings. Unfortunately we will have to wait until April 20th to see the two conference rivals square off. Both teams will stay in conference this weekend; North Kitsap takes on Klahowya on Friday at 5 pm and Olympia takes the ferry to Vashon for a 1:30 pm start on Saturday.

Our lone team from the Eastern Conference, #4 Gonzaga Prep has earned their spot with wins over Mt. Spokane, Lewis & Clark and Wenatchee, all in one calendar week. They will play host to Sandpoint (ID) Saturday afternoon at 1 pm.

The rankings for both Divisions, I and II, will move and shake as the season progresses. With 29 games schedules between this coming Friday and Saturday, you can be certain that some new groups will make their case for cracking the Top 10. We’re here to share an early look at some of the success found by teams around the state. Our goal is to help you stay keyed in to how all of the varsity teams in Washington are stacking up.
