New York’s Long Beach ends lacrosse state champ Bellevue’s 24-game win streak

LIDO BEACH, N.Y. – Entering its contest with Long Beach Polytechnic High School on Tuesday, undefeated Bellevue had high hopes of adding another win to its 2013 resume, but instead dropped its first boys high school lacrosse contest of the season, 10-5 to the Marines in Lido Beach, N.Y.

The loss, the Wolverines’ first since a 7-6 overtime defeat to rival Issaquah on March 30 of last year, ended a 24-game win streak for the defending Washington state champions.

Coming off a 7-6 win on Saturday to Port Washington at the U.S. Military Academy at West Point, Bellevue had extended its record nine straight this season and was in hopes of carrying that momentum entering Tuesday’s component.

With loss, the Wolverines still remain deadlocked with Mercer Island on top of the King West Conference with a 5-0-0 conference record.

Bellevue struck first with Hank Bethke putting a shot into the Long Beach net at the 8:35 mark of the first quarter.

Long Beach then came back with a pair to take the lead before Cole Johnson netted a pair to knot the game at 3-3 early in the second.

But Long Beach then put on the pressure, scoring four unanswered goals stretching into the third to stretch the Marines’ lead to 7-3.

The Wolverines, mounted a comeback, scoring another two as time expired in the third to narrow the gap to 7-5.  But that would be as close as Bellevue would come as the Marines delivered three more in fourth while holding the Wolverines scores to close-out the game.

Cole Johnson led Bellevue with three goals, an assist and a ground balls, while Bethke logged two goals and five ground balls.

On defense, Andrew Matthews, Simon Jenkin and Dakota Jones combined for 15 ground balls while goaltender Bradley Medeiros had 10 saves.

Bellevue (9-1-0) next faces Wantagh (N.Y.), Wednesday, April 10 in Wantagh, N.Y.

“I’m proud of the team for getting the win after the long travel,” said Bellevue head coach  and Long Island native John Baumann who’s Wolverines arrived in New York at 10:30 p.m. the night before the game following a cross country flight from Seattle. “To put a win together against a quality team speaks a lot about our guys.”

After matching the Vikings’ two goals in the first, Bellevue fell behind the #9 prep lacrosse team on Long Island by a single goal to trail 4-3 at the half.

In the third, the two squads again matched one another before the Wolverines turned up the head in the fourth, outscoring Port Washington 3-1.

Other Bellevue goals came from Hunter Lien, Dakota Jones, Bethke and Eric Hael, while goaltender Bradley Medeiros had five saves.

Port Washington was led by Luke Rizzo with two goals and two assists while goaltender Nick Ferrero recorded 12 saves.

“We want to win (these games), but ultimately we want to learn something about ourselves, so we pick some tough opponents,” said Baumann whose squad will look for a repeat win against its next opponent Long Beach on Tuesday.  “(The Long Beach game) will be a battle,” said Baumann, whose squad defeated the Marines during its 2012 trip to New York.  “Hopefully we’ll be rested up for it,” he said.  “There are no walk-through on this trip.”

Saturday’s game was the first of three for the 9-0-0 Wolverines against New York high school opponents this week.  On Tuesday, Bellevue faces #7 Long Beach in Lido Beach, N.Y. and on Wednesday the Wolverines take on #8 Wantagh.  Bellevue returns home on Tuesday, April 16 for an 8 p.m. matchup with rival Lake Washington at Bellevue High School.

Mercer Island boys drop Massachusetts lacrosse champion Concord-Carlisle

CONCORD, Mass.  – Erasing any doubt that Mercer Island High School is a force to be reckoned with on the national prep lacrosse stage, the Islanders emerged from their latest East Coast foray with a respectable 2-1 record after dishing out back-to back defeats of defending boys state champions in Maine and Massachusetts.

After dropping only its opening game to defending Massachusetts Division I champion Duxbury ranked #24 in the country in the bi-weekly Nike/US Lacrosse pole, the five-time state champion Islanders who have made it to the Washington title game in nine of the past 12 years, stepped up their game.

On Thursday, Mercer Island toppled Maine champion Scarborough 15-2 and then handled Massachusetts Division II champion Concord-Carlisle with a 7-2 win on Saturday.

“This was our goal.  We were expecting 2-1,” said Mercer Island head boys coach Ian O’Hearn, whose squad attracted two to three NCAA coaches in each of its three outings.  “The point of these trips is to get better and to get better competition,” he said.

On Saturday, O’Hearn’s Islanders were hot, asserting themselves against Concord-Carlisle despite a frigid wind-chill factor with temperatures dipping into the mid 30s.

Putting up four unanswered goals in the first before giving up the second quarter’s lone goal to the Patriots, Mercer Island entered the half-time break with a healthy 4-1 lead.

In the third, the Islanders again stepped forward outscoring the Patriots 2-1 before closing-out the game with a single unanswered score in the fourth.

“This was the best game we’ve played all season.  Our entire attack unit had a terrific game,” O’Hearn said after trying several new combinations including matching junior attackman Charlie Vetter with veterans Grant Preisler and Justin Rorem.

“(The three) were clicking, scoring and creating opportunities,” O’Hearn said.  “Vetter saw the field very well.  I liked what I saw.”

Vetter finished the day with a goal and a ground ball while proven MI threats, senior Steen Swedstedt and junior Peter Mahony, continued to drive the Islanders attack.

Swedstedt and Mahony finished with two goals apiece while Preisler had a goal and an assist and junior goaltender Benji Rothenberg recorded seven saves.

On Tuesday, the Islanders opened their East Coast swing against Duxbury, falling 8-4 to a Dragons’ squad stacked with six NCAA Division I commits.  In the loss, the Islanders put 23 shots on Duxbury goaltender and Georgetown commit Nick Marrocco who stopped 19.

On Thursday, the now 9-2 Islanders regained their legs after the cross-country flight to New England, unleashing the full force of its attack on defending Maine state champion Scarborough High School for a 15-2 win.

Against the Red Storm, Preisler, Mahony and junior Cooper Johnson, a student at the Bush School in Seattle, all delivered hat tricks, while Mercer Island’s defense kept Scarborough at bay as Rothenberg recorded just a single save.

The Islanders (9-2-0), which own a share of the King West Conference lead with Bellevue (8-0-0), are back in Washington state prep action on Tuesday as they travel to Bothell High School to face a 2-4-0 Bothell-Inglemoor squad in the Washington State High School Lacrosse Game of the Week on The Lacrosse Network.  The game will be streamed live at www.YouTube.com/TLN and also available at www.WashingtonHSlax.com
