Washington Chapter of US Lacrosse

Meeting Notes 6/8/04

Washington Chapter of US Lacrosse General Membership

WASHINGTON STATE LACROSSE FOUNDATION

Minutes of June 8, 2004 Board Meeting

Present:  Mark Larson, Kris Snider, Michael Moore, Matt Hipps, Fred Wilmot, Paula Wilkinson, Effie Wardenburg, Tony Olney, and Gail Shelton.

C-Lax Robert Chinnapongse made a presentation to the Board regarding promoting non-modified field lacrosse to novice adult players.  The only equipment necessary would be a stick, no pads or helmets and little or no contact.  Kris Snider said he had played a game similar to this in Australia and thought it was worth looking into.  Robert proposed co-ed novice leagues with clinics to teach the fundamentals.  Robert suggested the UW Experimental College as the administrative body but was asking the board to provide coaches to teach skills clinics.  The discussion developed from non-modified lacrosse to C-lacrosse and the Board asked Robert to come back in September with a budget, structure and an agenda for starting up the C-Lax program.

New Program Equipment Grants Matt Hipps

Four grants were given to new teams Tacoma, Issaquah Youth, Lynnwood and Bellingham.  Rulebooks were also purchased for all Youth coaches.  Two programs needed full goals and two programs wanted beginner sticks.  Equipment was also sent to Spokane for their start-up program.  Matt will provide a LaxWall as well as mens and womens equipment to raffle at LaxFest.

Coaches Clinic/Referees Clinic Tony Olney and Effie Wardenburg

Tony Olney (Mens Coaches) Tony Olney coordinated the coachs clinic and felt it was a very successful event that was well attended - 78 middle and high school coaches.  Ben was the clinician and did a great job.  Grants will be posted June 15 and are due August 15.  Tony suggested two or three clinics for 2005 one for experienced coaches and one or two for newer coaches.  There are so many new youth teams that it is imperative to have basic coaching clinics closer to the start of the season with local coaches.  Tony will be writing the Grant for a national coach to come out also.

Effie Warden burg (Womens Coaches) Effie is suggesting middle school clinics with local coaching talent and also bringing out a national coach for a clinic.  Effie will work on the Grant for the womens council.  She is also working on having a coachs corner and parents corner posted on walax.com

CPR Clinic- Tony Olney - Tony felt the CPR clinic was not as well attended this year as in the past.  The Chapter needs to encourage all coaches to complete first aid and CPR classes.

Video Library Tony purchased new materials at the National Convention but finds there arent enough to fill everyones needs.  He suggests we buy at least one set of the US Coaches video series and two if possible.  Kris Snider will follow-up with USL to see if we can get three complete sets.  Tony would also like to have the video library budget be $300-$400 for 2005.

LAXBASH The value of LaxBash was discussed.  In 2003 it was held at EMP and was adults only.  This year in an attempt to attract a larger audience of all ages a clinic was held for the kids.  Youth boys turned out for clinics but attendance by other groups (girls, women, men) was not good.  It was felt that April was the wrong time of year for the event and it seems to work better as an all-adult event than a family event.  LaxBash needs to be reconceptualized from the ground up before the Chapter puts energy into it in 2005.  Mark Larson will talk with Matt Sauri and put together a new plan.

2004 Championships We were tied up by the MLL this year and delayed on getting a deal signedthe event wasnt locked up until February.  In the end it worked out well for everyone.  We promoted a great event for the community, the organization went well all day, the MLL was happy and 6,000-7,000 fans were happy.  Financially, we had about $15,000 in sponsors money and $10,000 in equipment.  $8,000+ went back to individual clubs.  The t-shirts and programs broke even.

Looking to the future, a smaller venue may be better downsize in 2005.  The womens side likes a smaller venue, we wouldnt have to pre-sell tickets and it would be more reasonable to rent.  The combined finals fulfill the Chapters mission of unification and it is an important aspect of our Chapter.

Michael Moore will talk with Steve Eckerson at First & Goal; Mark Larson will investigate Mercer Island Stadium, Memorial Stadium and the new complex in Tukwila.

LaxFest LaxFest will be held at the Mercer Island stadium and adjoining fields on June 12.  Food, concessions, a raffle, fastest short competition etc. will fill in the day.  A game is being planned between the young alums and coaches as well as ten or twelve other games involving youth girls, youth boys, high school girls and high school boys.

Year-End Banquet Mark asked the Unified Council about hosting a year-end banquet to honor our All Americans, Academic All-Americans, Coaches of the year etc.  It would be at a venue where each person would pay for their own dinner no expense to the Chapter.  Planning will begin in August and perhaps the Sunday after the championships would be a good date for the banquet.  Need-based scholarships will be presented to graduating seniors
