Washington Chapter of US Lacrosse

Meeting Notes 1/28/04

Washington Chapter of US Lacrosse General Membership
  WASHINGTON STATE LACROSSE FOUNDATION

Minutes of January 28, 2004 Board Meeting

Present: Mark Larson, Gail Loveland, Effie Wardenburg, Greg Gutherless, Tom Wehe, Erik Smith, Kelly Nakata, Dylan Preble, Laurie Usher, Jana Lauderbaugh and Gail Shelton.

National Convention Philadelphia Tom Wehe, Greg Gutherless and Mark reported on their experiences at the convention. The San Juan Island Dragons received the Most Innovative Coaches national award. Convention was informational and everyone felt it was a worthwhile experience.

Chapter Equipment Requests have been made to borrow the goals from the Chapter. These goals were donated for the 2003 State Finals and would cost $1000 to replace. Mark asked for comments about loaning the equipment. Discussion followed regarding loaning to profit and non-profit organizations, asking for suggested donation from profit organizations, administering the loan policy, etc. Mark will take all the comments and write a policy to be presented at the next Board meeting.

2004 Championship Games May 22, 2004. Major League Lacrosse (MLL) is coming to Seattle and will share the day with our Washington Lacrosse Championships. This is probably a one-time event, but we are hoping it will bring attention to our lacrosse community. Contract negotiations with First and Goal and MLL have taken much longer than imagined. The day will be scheduled much the same way as in 2003. Sponsorships and ticket sales are our contributions to the success and we have zero financial risk. There will be three levels of tickets: Youth (16 and under) $10; Adult (16 and Up) $16 and VIP tickets $35. The VIP tickets will provide the holder with additional access to events, seats at the 50-yard line etc.

Patsy Pattison will oversee the ticket sales again this year. There will be incentives in place for teams who sell tickets. For every $10 ticket sold, the team will receive $2; for every $16 ticket sold, the team will receive $4 and for every VIP ticket ($35) sold, the team will receive $4. The incentive money comes directly back to the team. It is hoped that with the addition of the MLL game, it will be easier to sell tickets this year. Mark hopes to meet with each and every team in the boys HS/girls HS/girls youth/boys youth to talk about ticket sales, the finals and MLL.

Gail Loveland offered to help Patsy and Paula set up ticket sales using an internet company that she has experience with.

Michael Moore is responsible for sponsorships. Because this is the opening game of the MLL season it will be a televised event (ESPN2). The Chapter will receive 100% of the sponsorship money we bring to the event. MLL and First and Goal have strong incentives to market this event in the community.

The distribution of the proceeds will be determined by the Unified Board just as it was in 2003.

Coaches Clinic/Referees Clinic January 24/25, 2004 at SPU

Tony Olney (Mens Coaches) Although Tony was unable to attend the meeting, so he filed a report regarding the clinics. This was a very successful event. 78 middle and high school coaches attended. Ben Heinsohn from Forsyth County Day School was our clinician and did and awesome job. Our goal next year is to have three clinicians. One from our area to do an introduction to lacrosse for new coaches and parents and two from established programs to handle more advance topics. Special thanks go to Gail Shelton, Erik Smith, Mark Larson, Fred Wilmot and Kris Snyder for their hard work on the clinic. I would also like to thank Scott MacFarlane for hosting us at this restaurant, The Sandpoint Grill.

Effie Wardenburg (Womens Coaches) Effie brought the coach from the University of Oregon (Jennifer Larson) and Carol Kleinfelder from the East Coast out to Seattle. Effie enjoyed the process of finding the clinicians and felt they brought a lot to the coachs clinic. She thought everyone had a good time and the venue worked well.

Erik Smith (Mens Officials) Erik reported that over 100 officials were trained and the local officials did a great job as clinicians. Mike Bural presented a timers/scorers clinic for boys lacrosse. There were 20 attendees. Some suggestions for next year:
 Use SPU again
Secure the gym for both the officials and coaches
Sign-ups in the individual rooms rather than hallway
 Advertise more
Set schedule for the day earlier
Clean up the web page for easier access

There is such growth at the youth level and such a shortage of officials and coaches for this level; there was a suggestion to think about a clinic to teach parents coaching and officiating skills for 5/6 graders.

Mark thanked Tony, Effie and Eric for their tremendous hard work and presented each of them with a gift certificate to thank them.

Video Library Tony has updated the library and will give an updated list to be posted on walax.com soon. He reports that he is behind getting the videos out, but will have all requests in the mail by Jan. 30. He purchased new materials at the National Convention and will be working with the College Sports Television Network to tape the college lacrosse game of the week for the library.

LAXBASH Jana Lauderbaugh and Matt Sauri are working on this event along with Paula Wilkinson. The event will be held Saturday April 17 at Seahawks Stadium. Tickets will be $10 in advance and $12 at the door with an addition $5 charge for kids on the field. There will be two rooms set up. The first room will have the silent auction, a Chapter booth with information about the Chapter and ticket sales for the final games. The second room will have bands, a beer garden etc. On the field the Powell brothers will be conduction clinics, fastest shot contests and digital video on the field for purchase. Those over 21 years of age will get a wristband for alcohol, which wont be served until after 7 pm. MLL will be sending people and information out to market their game.

LaxBash profits will benefit the Chapter perhaps for scholarship funds. This event will be used to promote the finals and LaxFest.

Concerns expressed: Alcohol served with young people in attendance; insurance; recognition of female lacrosse equality is crucial. The Womens Council was asked to contact sponsors regarding sending women players out for LaxBash to put on clinics for the female playersthen contact Jana immediately with information.

LAXFEST Mark Larson is investigating the use of the Mercer Island stadium and adjoining fields June12 event.

YEAR-END BANQUET Mark asked the Unified Council about hosting a year-end banquet to honor our All Americans, Academic All-Americans, Coaches of the year etc. It would be at a venue where each person would pay for their own dinner no expense to the Chapter. Perhaps a keynote speaker will be invited. The general consensus seemed to be that although this is a great idea it is something the Chapter should plan for 2005.

Meeting adjourned at 9:30
