Seattle Women's Team Takes 2nd Place at 2001 Western States Tournament The Seattle Women's Lacrosse team torched the field in the Davis sunshine before falling to tournament host UC Davis in the Championship game Sunday, April 1st. Seattle outscored their opponents by a combined score of 42 to 21 while winning 4 out of 5 games. The tournament started out with a very tough match against Seattle rival ReLax. ReLax came out really hard hoping to avenge a previous week's loss. The first half was played very close before Seattle was able to pull away in the 2nd half to win 8 - 3. Next up for Seattle was the Colorado State team. Seattle dominated play and was able to use the opportunity to really begin to work their offense. 1st year Goalie Tarsi Burnside also played very strong in goal as Seattle seemed to just take over the game and overpower C-State mentally and win 14 - 1. The late game Saturday was against UCLA. Again, Seattle came out very strong and outplayed the Bruins 11 - 4. It was a good all around for Seattle. The Sunday morning game against Cal-Poly really focussed on speed. Cal-Poly featured tremendous all-around speed which Seattle countered with superior stick skills. Cal-Poly was one of the best teams in the tournament. However, Seattle was able to prevail 7 - 4 setting up the Tournament Championship game against UC Davis. The win came at a high price as Jen Naylor, a key player for Seattle, was lost when she tore two ligaments in her left (dominant) hand ring-finger. Short on subs and worn from the hot California weather Seattle faced the Aggies for the title Sunday afternoon. Davis featured better stick skills than Cal-Poly with comparable speed. Seattle seemed to be a step behind and unable to get off good clear shots. UC Davis jumped out early and Seattle was never able to catch up - failing to use the strong team play that had been a key to getting them to championship game. The final score was UC Davis 9, Seattle Women's 2. Many on the team are already talking of returning to Western States in 2002 to reclaim the title. |
