Feffie Barnhill Coaches and Players Clinics Wrap up.

Seattle, Dec.3, 2001

86 coaches and players, from as far away as Montana and U of O, participated and learned some serious  lax from lacrosse coach extraordinaire Feffie Barnhill over the weekend Nov. 30-Dec. 2 on Mercer Island.  Barnhill's coaching resume is extensive and includes among many other accomplishments 18 years as head coach at William and Mary, Asst. Coach to the champion US National Team in the 1984 World Cup, current Head Coach of Scotland's National squad, and the current Chair of US Lacrosse's Board of Directors.  Feffie has coached many of the world's most talented lacrosse players and currently resides over Barnhill Enterprises in Wilmington, DE.

There were four sessions of clinics this weekend, Beginning Coaching Technique, Advanced Coaching, College Level Players and Advanced High School Players.  Feffie introduced a wide range of lacrosse concepts to coaches and players...from new basic skill techniques through advanced crease defense, as well as how to make the most of college recruiting. The clinics were organized by the NWSLA-Northwest Schoolgirls Lacrosse Association.  Our sincere gratitude to Byron Stuck and Jane Gallup for arranging and overseeing the facilities. For more information contact Stephanie Cone.

In the Friday evening coaches session, Feffie demonstrates a clean check on Kitsap Coach Val Torrens.  This is a highly effective way to check the ball from your opponent after she's picked up a ground ball AND get immediate possession before the ball hits the ground. With a quick snap of your wrist, check down on your opponents stick where the head meets the shaft.  This motion forces the stick down while the ball remains in the air allowing you to take possession.

Feffie demonstrates a clean check to the strings while your opponent is in throwing position. Not recommended when other players are in front of the ball carrier OR when she's shooting on goal! Notice Feffie's hand position on the stick...she "shoots" the stick through her top hand, getting the extension necessary to carry out this type of check.  The ball is propelled forward away from the ball carrier's head.

Feffie is given the undivided attention of over 40 high school players on Sunday afternoon.
