Washington Girls HS League

Week of April 28th, Seventh week of games
April 28-May 2

As the regular season is rapidly coming to a close, the two teams who were seemingly untouchable have suffered unexpected blows to their perfect records.  In the A league it was the Panthers who, while still undefeated, ended in a tie with a Bainbridge Island team that they not only beat in the early season, but had beaten badly.  In the B league Bellevue truly looked to be sailing through their competitions.  This past week Kitsap beat the seemingly unbeatable Bellevue squad.

A League Recaps

The Bainbridge Island SPARTANS  had a busy week.  As they say, "two out of three ain't bad".  But their biggest victory of the week was perhaps not their win over a Forest Ridge team they had previously lost to, nor their second win of the season over Mercer Island.  No, the biggest victory of the week had to be their tie game against the  unbeaten Panthers team.  For the Panthers, coming off of spring break had not done them any favors.  They were unable to generate the passing game that usually keeps the ball out of the sticks of the other team.  Bainbridge played tough in the midfield was able to even up the score in the closing minutes and gain possession when it counted.  Even though their final shot was unable to find the back of the net, the Spartans have done what no other team had done as of yet this season; deny a Panthers victory.  Also helping Bainbridge Island is the distribution in scoring that has emerged to a greater extent as of late.  Jen Utley is still the clear leader on offense, but she getting an awful lot of help from her team.  Specifically Whitney Hume and Maggie Pettit.  Hume contributed with 5 goals total this week and Pettit had 6, two per game.

Mercer Island was busy as well this week.  They have climbed themselves up to 5th place in the league adding two more wins to give them a record 3-7.  Losing to Bainbridge by six points did not stop the Islanders from coming back to beat Holy Names twice this week.  The top four scorers for Mercer Island are Sara Utzschneider, Tara McTavish, Dani Zorn, and Carrie Philbrick.  Those for combined for 12 of the teams 18 goals this week.  While the team is not in playoff contention this year, they have certainly made huge strides this week, and this year.

Lakeside added two more wins to their record this week beating Overlake and Holy Names for the second time each this season.  The Lions currently sit in 3rd place in the A league with a record of 7-2.  Mallory Lobisser took over the league scoring lead with 51 goals on the year.  Lobisser scored 10 goals on the week.  Lobisser also entered herself in the assist column this week.  She now has 1 assist to go with her 51 goals on the year.  Liz Morbeck had 5 goals and 4 assists on the week.  Morbeck still leads the league in assists.  Also continuing to play strong this week was Sara Axelrod.  Axelrod scored 4 this week but also had an impressive 5 assists.

Forest Ridge came away with the win last Monday against Overlake.  Despite being slowed up by a sore knee, Spencer was still able to lead the scoring charge with 5 on the day.  Also having a strong day was senior captain Katie Malone who was able to find the back of the net 3 times.  Right with her with 3 goals was Freshman Erika Spencer.  Spencer and Malone have both quietly racked up 10 goals on the year.  Also playing strong for the Raiders was Junior A wing Kate Phillips.  Phillips had 3 assists on the day.  Junior Liz Voeller was all over the field scrapping for ground balls and was able to score and assist twice.  Leslie Walker and Lauren Borucki also helped in the scoring.  For the Owls, Anna De Regt and Alex Philips each scored 3.  De Regt again proved very difficult to contain with her combination of speed and drive.
It was the transitional play of Bainbridge Island that was difficult for the Raiders to stop.  And while the Forest Ridge attack was unable to come up with enough in the end, the settled defense, Led by Monica McQuaid, Brooklyn Lewis, and Christine Jones was very impressive.  Also of note was the freshman goalie battle of Jamie O'brien and Dimitra Lokatis.  Both Goalies were a factor and both came up big for their teams.  While in the end Jamie O'brien was out shot and came out with the loss, she had 16 saves on the day to the 10 saves of Lokatis.  Both proved to be goalies of the future.

The Panthers went on the their winning ways in their second match-up of the week defeating Overlake by a score of 14-7.  Defensive leader Noelle Anderson again came out the high scorer for the team with 4 goals.  Lauren Bailey had the high on assists for the day with 3 and also scored 3 goals. Scoring her first goal of the year was Meredith Rockwell.
For Overlake it was also their defensive standout, Raffinee Eller, leading the scoring.  Eller had 3 goals and an assist.  Anna De Regt, Amy Elliason, Julia Hunt, and Laura Uhlmansiek each scored one goal.  It was also the first goal of the season for Amy Elliason.

Up coming Match-ups

Mercer Island and Holy Names meet for the second time.

Forest Ridge faces Holy Names and the Panthers.

B League Recaps

Bellevue came out the better against Curtis.  Brittany Allen was able to find the net 3 times and led the scoring along with Bellevue stand out Emily Shubin who had 3 goals and 2 assists.  Kaity Vowels had 2 and rounding out the scoring for Bellevue was Lindsey Anderson, Brittany Deal, and Courtney Hull with 1.
For Curtis it was Lindsey Brown and Sara Ball leading the their team each with two.  Curtis did a good job finding different players as 3 others were able to score.  Katie Galligan Becki Hunter and Justine Parisio each had 1.  Lindsey Brown is quietly having herself a very good year.  She has 47 goals on the year and has shown she can score against any opponent.  Against Snohomish this week Brown scored 8 goals.  Against Mercer Island B she scored 6 of the teams 7 goals.  Sara Sipes is also having a good year in goal.  Sipes saved over 50% of the shots taken on her against Snohomish.  Sipes is 3rd in the B league in save percentage but has by far taken the most shots against her of any goalie in the B league and has the most saves.

Greenwood, who is having a fantastic season, also came out the winner of Mercer Island B this week.  Scoring 6 of the teams 10 goals was Sarah Bryant.  Katy Osbourne had 2 wit Katherine Remarcke and Chelsea Wong each scoring 1.

The big game of the week was Kitsaps win over 1st place Bellevue.  With Bellevue dealing with some key injuries, Kitsap was able to see an opportunity and execute for the win.  Playing together very well as a team, they were able to spread the scoring around and find  the openings.  Krista Brown and Bonnie Cordoza each scored two.  Amanda Divyak Cori Johnson and Megan Lockart each had one.  Bellevue had previously been undefeated.  Kitsap stands in 3rd place in the league.
Kitsap also won their game against the Panthers B squad by a score of 16-7.  Again the team got a good spread of attack but it was Megan Lockart with the dominant performance of the day.  Lockart scored 8 goals.  All in all it was a good home stand for Kitsap this week.
