Washington Girls HS League

Week of April 7, Fourth week of games

Calling all coaches!!!! It is very important to get all player stats and game results entered into sportability so I can fully report on individual and team records.  I very much want to give a full picture of who is doing what in the B league.  Every time a score is not reported the standings are not accurate.  Please help me to report on the hard work your players are doing!!!

A League Recaps

Fresh off winning the Western States Tournament, the Panthers came back into town to go 2-0 for the week and find themselves on top of the A League standings for the first time in the teams history.  The Panthers bettered Forest Ridge by a score of 18-13.  Noelle Anderson led the charge with 4 goals and 2 assists.  Chelsea Hansen also contributed to the win, not only by scoring 3 goals, but also with a team high 4 assists.  The Panthers continue to do a fantastic job spreading the scoring around making them extremely hard to defend.  Eileen Cahill also came up big for the team with 4 caused turnovers and 2 draw controls.  The Raiders did their best, though, and it was not a weak effort.  The most the undefeated Panthers had been scored on in one game was 6.  Forest Ridge racked up a season high 13 goals against the Panthers.  Coach Cone was forced to call a time out with ten minutes to go as the Raiders had gone on a run to bring the score to 13-12.  After the time out the Panthers went on a 5-1 run to close out the game.

Next up for the Panthers was the Mercer Island A squad.  While Mercer Island was defeated by a score of 17-3, it does not reflect the effort of play that they put out.  Goalie Kelly Nakata had an extremely strong showing saving as many as she allowed to earn herself an impressive 50% save ratio on the day.  Mercer Island had scoring contribution from Tara McTavish, Sara Utzschneider, and Dani Zorn.  Joanne Krochalis was one of many Panthers to lend a helping handl.  Krochalis had 3 goals on the day, as well as 7 goals and tow assists on the week.  In the end the dominant attack offered up by Jessica Verrilli scoring 5 goals was simply too strong.

Forest Ridge won what turned out to be an epic battle to remain in second place in the A league standings.  Bainbridge had a strong first half looking in control but the Raiders brought it back within reach by halftime.  The second half saw several lead changes.  Jen Utley led the attack for Bainbridge and was difficult to contain.  For Forest Ridge it was Jackie Spencer leading the scoring.  With 10 seconds left, however, and the game all tied up, it was Leslie Walker with the ball.  Walker missed her shot but was awarded a free position for a shooting space violation in the waning seconds.  Walker missed her free position shot but was quickly awarded another free position for another shooting space violation.   Walker would not miss again as Forest Ridge won the game with only fractions of a second left.  Bainbridge coach Janelle Mueller was not happy with the second shooting space violation call, but the call stood in what was surely a tough loss for the Bainbridge Island squad.

Player Highlights

Jessica Verrilli is the top overall scorer for the Panthers.  This week she netted 8 goals:  5 Against Mercer Island and 3 against Forest Ridge.  But scoring is not the only area where Verrilli makes an impact.  She is second in the A league for caused turnovers and third in the league in controlling the draw.

While Noelle Anderson does not dominate the league in any one statistical category, she is definately one of the leagues best all around players.  Playing 3rd man and Center, Anderson is a strong contributor for the Undefeated Panther's on both the offensive and defensive end.  This week saw her scoring 7 goals to add to a season high of 13.  She also has the second highest number of draw controls on the season for the A league sparking many Panther scoring drives.

As the team is still struggling to find it's first win, the play of Mercer Island goalie is not going unnoticed.  Kelly Nakata is a fantastic goalie.  Mercer Island has allowed 136 shots on goal this year.  Nakata has managed to save an impressive 76 of those shots.  That is 16 more saves than any goalie in A or B league play.

Jackie Spencer was the high scorer for Forest Ridge this week with 11 goals.  She now shares the league lead in scoring with teammate Leslie Walker.   Spencer is also leading the league in assists with 15.  Just behind is Lakeside's Liz Morbeck with 13.

Up Coming Games of Note

On Tuesday 4/15 Undefeated Lakeside gets back into action against undefeated and 1st place Panthers.

Lakeside also takes on Bainbridge Island.

B League Recaps

Bellevue is sailing right along in the B league.  The team contested 3 games this week and now stands 8-0.   Brittany Glant led the strong challenge for Mercer Island with 3 goals, but Bellevue was able to come away with a 4 point win.  Also losing to Bellevue by 4 points was the Panthers B team.  The Panthers played well with a strong defensive effort but were unable to hold off the league leaders.  Kitsap found themselves simply over powered in what was a 17-7 loss to Bellevue.

In what seemed to be a tight game, with a final score of 14-14, neither Eastside nor Kitsap were able to claim final victory.  In fact the teams simply traded halves.  Kitsap dominated the first half and led at one point with a score of 8-2.  Eastside was able to come back and dominate in the second half leaving the teams dead even on the day.

In the second tie this week, Mercer Island B found themselves all even at 8 with the Panthers B squad.

Player Highlights

Mercer Island B's Brittany Glant Scored 3 goals in their losing bid against Bellevue.  Glant was aided in scoring by Kelsey Mesher, Carolyn Peterson, Kassidy Standefer, and Tanya Swartz each with 1 goal.
