Port Angeles JV 4 - Bainbridge JV 5

Port Angeles JV Recap: Port Angeles JV vs Bainbridge JV.  The Rider JV team finally got on the board scoring 4 goals in their second game.  Our skills seem to be improving in quantum leaps on a daily basis.  Just two nights ago we could only get 4 shots on goal, and tonight we scored that many.  We were able to get up two goals on a solid Bainbridge team after falling behind by two initally.  However, the Spartans were able to tie it up just before the end of regulation.  Overtime was hard fought, and was capped by an outstanding feed and quick stick goal by Bainbridge with 1:30 to go.  We look forward to the next two contests.

Nathan Hale 7 - Lakeside 13

Nathan Hale Recap: The Raiders struggle to put together 4 solid quarters of lacrosse was exposed by a hot shooting attack. Despite some great individual efforts, including another 25 saves in goal by Ryan Garrett and the begining of a new Haynes scoring era.The Raiders are still searching for that one solid game.

Vashon 9 - Burien 8

Eastside 6 - Mercer Island 12

Eastside Recap: Good ball game.  The score did not really reflect Eastside marginal imrpovement in play.  For the first time all year, the team in black came out strong in the 1st quarter and actually had a 2-1 lead.  The offense began working as a unit, as evident by 4 assisted goals.  Matt Sinkula also began to find his rhythm.  However, at this pointy in the season, Eastside continues to play with too many lapses.  Mercer Isalnd was clearly the superior team.  They held the ball well offenively.  Two big keys in the game: First, Mercer cleared the ball extrememly well, while forcing Eastside into several turnovers on our clears.

Second, with the score 8-4, Mercer went 3 men down and handed Eastside a chance to jump back in.  Eastside got the looks, but couldn't stick it in the back of the net.  Then a silly unforced turnover gave Mercer the ball and their penalty killers were able to stave of the rest of the time....ball game.

Bellevue 12 - Bainbridge A 13

Bellevue Recap: Goalie Matt Stanley kept Bellevue close with a seven save first quarter.  The Wolverine offense caught fire in the second quarter with four goals in four minutes will Brandon Deal and Andy Young connecting repeatedly.  Freshman Joel Weber sparked the emotion of the team by coming off the bench in the second quarter and popping one to the upper corner right away.  A slow start in the second half again let Bainbridge extend their lead but the Bellevue defense, led by Eric Heilman, clamped down in the fourth quarter to blank the defending state champs for the final seven minutes.  Outstanding faceoff play by Brandon Moore-Walker kept the ball in Bellevue's hand!

s and led to a late 6 goal rally that brought the game to within one goal.  Matt Stanley finished with 18 saves.  Team defense and confidence were the keys to the strong showing by Bellevue.

Port Angeles JV 0 - Bellevue JV 2

Port Angeles JV Recap: PA JV vs Bellevue JV.  Thanks to Bellevue for hosting our new JV players on the turf and under the lights at Bellevue HS.  It was a great experience for our players, who have improved drasticaly since the jamboree.  Even though we didn't score we were able to play the game on both sides of the field.  Defensively, we did things pretty well, keeping the game scoreless for two and a half quarters.  Fatigue and a few mental mistakes gave Bellevue the opportunity to get a couple goals in the third. As our skills improve and we start to get a feel for offensive play, we should start getting more shots on goal. Look forward to our next game in a couple of weeks.

Lakeside 12 - Mercer Island 8

Lakeside Recap: Great game!  Well officiated, well played, good sportsmanship all around.  Everybody had fun under the lights and in the rain at Mercer Island.  Solid game turned in by Lakeside overcoming a one goal deficit at halftime to win going away.  Cramer Gillin, Cole Wright, Matt Miller, Doug Rooke and Jon Bodanski at LSM played solid, swarming defense all game long.  The attack really stepped up with all three starters, Ian Redman, John Fluke and Kyle Lane recording hatricks.  Redman had another 3 assist game.  Ball movement and toughness were the keys in the game.

Eastside 6 - Overlake 8

Eastside Recap: Eastside continues to shoot themselves in the foot.  This game was fairly sloppy due to the weather, muddy field and the huge amount of penalties called.  Unfortunately, Eastside failed to capitalize on their oppurtunities despite tremendous games by a few individuals.  Senior defenseman, John Trenkamp was all over the field even notching two goals on man-up situations.  Defenseman Ryan Birchler also played the best game of his career, notching his first career point with a sweet assist.  Eastside offense was up and down, struggling mightily at times.  Although, Eastside showed guts coming back from 2-0 and 6-3 deficits to tie the game 6-6 headed into the 4th quarter. But, Overlake kept composure and closed out the game strong to take the contest.

Curtis Recap: Curtis picked up their first win of the season.  Everybody got playing time to make this a total team effort.  We held the ball, ran some great plays on offense,  and played a strong defensive game as well.  Game MVP goes to Sean Bobadilla for a solid showing at crease defender.  Great game guy's!

Maple Valley A 6 - Bainbridge A 7

Maple Valley A Recap: Seven time state A champ Bainbridge travelled to two time state B champ Maple Valley and came away with a hard fought 7-6 overtime win in the ran and mud.  It was a close game throughout, with MV taking a 3-1 lead after one, a 3-3 tie at half, and MV leading 5-3 at then end of three.  But BI took control of the 4th, taking a 6-5 lead midway through the quarter.  MV's Collin Anstrom answered with a tying goal in the final minutes.  Both sides had opportunities in the OT, but BI's A. Smith scored his 4th with 22 seconds left to end it.  MV's Brian Johnson scored 3 while Anstrom, Travis Cornelison, and Weston Butt each added one.  Nick Johnson went 4-1 on face-offs, while Weston Butt and Adam Running combined for 11 groundballs and 11 takeaways on defense.  Goalie Mark Louvier had another solid game with 15 saves.  It was a great comeback and win by BI, but MV did a fine job in their first game with the state's top team.

Panthers Lax Club 8 - Franklin 6

Panthers Lax Club Recap: Great game by both squads under tough conditions. Rain, wet field and one rookie ref to start the game. Both teams played clean ball. Franklin jumped out to an early 3 game lead, but the Panthers kept their cool and played disciplined fundamental lacrosse. Stellar game by Alex Aigner who had 18 ground balls, 5 assists and 1 goal. Tyler Carr and Nick Heilbrunn kept their man from scoring on the d and Adam scored 4!  We look forward to what I am sure will be a barn burner rematch between these two squads in late April.

Bainbridge A 18 - Bellevue 3

Bainbridge A Recap: Renewing a vigorous rivalry, Bellevue came to the Island to compete in Bainbridge's first season game.  Initially, both teams had difficulty picking up the groundballs and then keeping the balls securely in the baskets once possession was obtained.  Faceoffs in the first half continued for 30 seconds or more as the ball would be touched repeatedly by the mid fielders and often kicked into one end or the other beyond control would be established.  Bainbridge was able to capitalize on getting close position to goal to take high percentage shots and running out to a 11 to 1 lead at half.  Both teams executed fundamentals better in the second half.  The Bellevue attack converted its increased possession time into 2 goals as the third period was played evenly.  New combinations were used in the fourth period with the game ending at 18 to 3.  Bellevue played hard and showed good sportmanship; both characteristics will likely carry over to the rematch in five days at Bellevue.

Eastside 4 - Lakeside 5

Eastside Recap: Good battle.  Both teams put out a lot of effort.  Final came down to execution.  Eastside played way too sloppy- too many unforced errors.  Lakeside jumped out to a 4-1 halftime lead.  Both teams traded goals in the 3rd quarter and only the stellar play of Justin Patterson in net kept Eastside within striking distance.  Eastside finally picked it up in the 4th and closed to 5-4 with about 2 minutes remaining.  Eastside had the ball and a chance to tie with under 30 seconds, but Lakeside held on.  Brady Lynch had a big day for Eastside notching his first career hat-trick.  John Trenkamp also played well on the defensive end.  Justin Patterson finished with 14 saves.

Franklin 10 - Maple Valley B 4

Franklin Recap: On a Hot day At Franklin's Field, the smell of Barbeque was in the air as Franklin held its own festival of fun. Maple Valley's B Squad did very well. Coming back for a rematch with Franklin after being defeated, MV played much more harder and had put the tight grip on Franklin. But Franklin managed to squeeze out. Franklin started out well with 4 goals in the first half.Maple Valley had score one for the first half. 3 More goals for Franklin during the 3rd period. While Maple Valley came back strong with 3 goals in the 4th period, Franklin managed to hold on and win the game. Good game Maple Valley B.

Port Angeles 11 - Bainbridge B 3

Port Angeles Recap: A big game between two rivals in the western conference of the "B" division. After our dismal performance against Bainbridge B at the jamboree, we knew we had to play at a high level and keep Bainbridge from getting into their game. We were fortunate to be able to control the first quarter and as a result jump out to a 5 goal lead. Good ball control and scoring on 44% of our shots were the keys to this game.  We know Bainbridge will reload and be ready for the next game at their house in a few weeks. It will undoubtedly be a good one. Congratulations to Logan Smith on scoring his first goal as a Roughrider in divisional play.

Burien 11 - Roosevelt 3

Burien Recap: We didn't play well, and were short of players due to sickness.  Roosevelt played with heart and determination, but couldn't generate enough offense to take advantage of our poor play and multiple penalties.  Generally we are not playing with our heads nor practicing good sportsmanship and I'm not happy with our play.  The score does little to reflect the level of play.

Port Angeles Recap: A very young Roosevelt team starting out with a new program made the long trip to Port Angeles and played with a lot of heart and determination. To their credit, they played hard to the final horn against a much more experienced squad. They have the nucleus of a good defensive squad to build their team around, and will improve as the season progresses.  Congratulations to PA players, Brett Witters, Nick Crabb, and Spencer James, who scored their first goals as Roughriders.

Maple Valley A 12 - Bellevue 2

Maple Valley A Recap: Thank you Bellevue from moving your game to 7:30 to allow our double-header with  the B team.  MV finally put together 4 quarters of focus, intensity, and concentration with a 12-2 win over a well coached and solid Bellevue squad.  MV again started fast, however, leading 6-0 after one quarter and 8-0 at half. Mark Louvier turned in another solid performance in goal with 12 saves.  Co-captains Weston Butt and Adam Running led the defense combining for 11 groundballs, 4 takeaways, and 1 goal. Co-captain Travis Cornelison led the middies with 2 goals and 1 assist, while the three lines went 9-4 on face-offs. Junior Brian Johnson again led the attack with 6 goals on only 8 shots, but junior creaseman Kelly Kriska deserves credit for 9 ground balls, several of them in heavy traffic.  The man-up went 2 for 6 while the man-down unit was successful on 7 of 8 opportunities.  MV is off to a good start;  we finally saw four solid quarters, but a lot of hard work still needs to be done in the transi

Port Angeles 7 - Eastside 3

Eastside Recap: "B" League beware:  Port Angeles is for real!!  The Roughriders showed the "A" leaguers how lacrosse should be played and sent Eastside home with their tails between their legs.  Port Angeles played an extremely solid, disiplined game.  They swarmed groundballs, controlled possession of the game and made few mental errors.  Port Angeles came out tough from the get go and took a 2-0 lead.  Eastsdie collected itself and controlled the 2nd quarter to cut to a 2-3 defecit at halftime.  But Port Angeles stayed composed and their goalie kept the nets clean.  Port Angeles is simply the better TEAM and a class program.  The scary part: only 3 seniors!!!  The future is bright.  Justin Patterson played well in net for Eastside or things could have been much worse.

Port Angeles Recap: The Riders were priviledged to host Eastside on Saturday and fortunate to get them in their first game of the year.  From our point of view an extremely well played first half ended with the Riders holding a 3-2 advantag

Mercer Island 9 - Overlake 6

Mercer Island Recap: Hard fought game, Overlake has a tough defense, including Goalie, Boswell, who is like the Eveready Bunny...never stops. Boswell got over 40 shots hammered at him, only let 9 in. Look for good things from Overlake this year.

Port Angeles 13 - Vashon 2

Port Angeles Recap: The Riders want to thank the young Vultures for a hard fought game. Vashon made us work hard for each and every goal. Our team depth was just a bit too much over the course of the game. We feel bad about the hard check late in the game, and again want to reassure all the Vultures that the intent was not to hurt anyone. We are looking forward to our next two meetings as competitive and enjoyable contests.

Vashon Recap: Port Angeles has talent and athleticism at virtually all positions. Vashon was without four players and had to play ironman lacrosse with an undersized and less talented bunch. But, Vashon players scrapped until the end.

Maple Valley A 14 - Nathan Hale 5

Maple Valley A Recap: In a well played game, MV defeated Nathan Hale on Franklin's home field.  The last minute move to Franklin seemed to unsettle Hale as MV jumbed to 4 quick goals in the first quarter and led 6 - 0 at half.  Hale then settled down and came back with 3 goals in the 3rd quarter on some well executed fast breaks. MV re-asserted control, scoring 8 goals in the second half.  Goalie Mark Louvier had another good game, making 14 saves.  His defense was led by Weston Butt and Adam Running who combined for 8 ground balls and 6 takeaways.  Attackman Brian Johnson led the offense with 4 goals on 6 shots, while middie Travis Cornelison scored a hat trick.  Other scoring was distributed among the attack and 2nd and 3rd midfield lines.

Franklin Recap: It was a very hard faught game on a very water and mud filled game. Kris scored and gave Franklin a lead. The score was tied by a goal with less than 5 seconds by Demarquis to end the half. Franklin then scored 4 more goals. Good game MV

Port Angeles 9 - Panthers Lax Club 2

Port Angeles Recap: The Riders were impressed with the composure of the first year Panthers. They will obviously be a team to recon with in the future.  The Riders continue to place a heavy emphasis on defense, holding the Panthers to only 9 shots on goal. Offensively, we are starting out much better than we have in the past with improved ball handling and shooting (72% shots on goal). Congratulations to Ryan Anderson and Dan Perez on scoring their first goals as Roughriders

Panthers Lax Recap: The Panthers Lacrosse Club competed in its first ever WA HS game. We thank Port Angeles for making the trip over and providing a tough/fair competitive game. Port Angeles had solid athletes at every position and proved to be too much for the young but greatly improving Panther Club. Joe Grant proved stellar in goal with 16 saves. Alex Aiger provided the game highlight with a sweet pass to Tommy Mangold who finished nicely and the Coaches award for the game went to Adam Sangeorsan who hustled his butt off.

Maple Valley B 4 - Roosevelt 0

Maple Valley B Recap: The rain held off and the weather was cool for first game of the year between Maple Valley B's and Roosevelt H.S.  Maple Valley was fortunate enough to gain a three goal lead by the end of the first quarter. Roosevelt buckled down at the end of quarter #1 and the rest of the game turned out to be a back and forth battle for control of the field.  Maple Valley was able to score one more goal toward the end of the game.  Final score Maple Valley 4, Roosevelt 0.

Roosevelt B Recap: Thanks to Maple Valley for a good game. Roosevelt overcame the "Jamboree jitters" to display a disciplined defense in the team's debut.  MV countered with 3 first quarter goals from #88 (who was that guy, anyway?.)The next 3 periods were hard fought with MV scoring once.  Several second half fast break attempts by Roosevelt standouts Rick Martell-Scott and Sam Harlow weren't enough to turn the game around.  Next week we travel to play Port Angeles and Burien.

Maple Valley A 8 - Lakeside 5

Maple Valley A Recap: Maple Valley opened its season with an 8-5 win over a tough Lakeside squad. The thrill of victory was marred, however, by a cheap and unexcusable hit from behind in the fourth quarter.  Luckily, the Lakeside player was not seriously injured.  The MV coaches can only apologize to the Lakeside players, their coaches, and their parents for such a cheap hit.
