Oregon 12

University of Oregon:
Oregon and Chico State played a fast paced, high scoring, shoot out with plenty of action and hits on Feb. 2. Chico jumped to an early lead, going up 3 goals to 1 middle of the first quarter. The Ducks after goals from Mike Christensen and Josh Waldman ended the first quarter with a 3-3 tie. The Ducks held the lead for most of the game, leading by as far as 4 goals in the 3rd quarter. With three minutes to go in the game, Chico tied the game at 12, and was able to seal the victory with 2 quick goals.

Both teams played outstanding lacrosse. The stars of the game were LSM Chris Gaffney of the Ducks for his hustle, ground balls, and outstanding defence, and attackmen Andrew Wesley of Chico State for scoring 5 goals.

Washington 9 (OT)

Washington:
Washington won a thrilling 9-8 victory on Senior Attackman Cal Blethen's game winning shot in overtime. Freshman attack Ian Fair (W.Harford, CT) led the Huskies with four goals and winning the last four faceoffs of the game, the final one setting up the winning goal.

A hard-fought defensive battle throughout, the game will most likely be remembered for the bizarre and unlikely end to the fourth quarter. As the final horn released a horde of jubilant Dawgs onto the field in celebration of an apparent 8-7 win, Chico
had actually been given a time-out with two seconds remaining. Wildcat Rob Meinbress was awarded the ball outside the box and let loose a desperation shot on the inbounds whistle, which somehow snuck through a wall of defenders and past goalie Nick Pollock, forcing overtime.

Senior Chet Costales, who was elevated to co-captain with Justin Penn out of the line-up, and Mike Smith, who replaced Penn on the first midfield line each had two goals. Pollock recorded 13 saves coming off the bench as the Huskies starting keeper had to miss much of the first quarter in an off-field scramble to replace an illegal mouthpiece.

Meinbress and Andy Wesley paced a balanced Wildcat offense with two goals apiece.

"A very satisfying win against one of the best Chico clubs I've seen in 16 years." said a tired and wet Coach Wishengrad during the post-game. "Coach Dini and his staff have done a great job preparing them to play. We owe a huge thanks to our fans and to the incredible Husky Marching Band, who inspired the Dawgs throughout and lend the game a special atmosphere. And thanks again, Wildcats, for roadtripping up to the Northwest to make our Opening night so memorable. See you in the Big Valley on WCLL turf next season, where I hope someone wins in 60 minutes -- I'm not sure my heart can take another game like this one!".

Well, SFU is good. We were without 4 of our regular starters so we feel like we could have given a better game perhaps, but we still learned a lot. A lot of rookies got some solid time in the game and they are all coming along really well. Clark and Yuen are great players, and the whole SFU team showed us how much stick skills can change a game as they killed one penalty after another on us. It was a fun game and we are taking a lot away from it, and hopefully we'll see the Clansmen again later this season. Thanks guys for the game.

Simon Fraser:

PLU kept it close for the first quarter buy we were able to open it up.Jr. midfielder Athen Yuen had an amazing game with 6 goals and 6 assists and freshman goaltender Matt Johnson made a strong debut with 17 saves. Thanks to PLU for coming up and good luck to them the rest of the season.

University of Oregon played an exciting game against Western Washington last Saturday. The lead changed hands several times over the course of the game, with the Ducks ending up on top, 17-14. The game was a high scoreing, fast paced shootout, with lots of break away goals, big hits, and fast action. The Duck's attack was lead by Mike Christensen (4 goals, 3 assists), Jared Blanchette (4 goals, 5 assists) and Pat O'Donnel (5 goals, 1 assist). Dominic Kan was unstoppable on face offs, and Tyler Douglas played amazing at LSM. Keith Cournover (6 goals) and Mike Moorgan (3 goals and 3 assists) led Western's attack.
The Ducks player of the game was goalie Mike Zienkewicz who made some amazing saves that completely kept the Ducks in the game. Western Washington's player of the game was Keith Counover with his 6 goals.
(Brian Platz)
The game was very close for 3 1/2 quarters, the majority of that time the difference in score was +/- 1. During the last half of the 4th quarter, Western seemed to lose their spark/edge and U of O came up with the Win 17-14.

Wow... Western gave us a bit of a scare. We got into penalty trouble early and Western capitalized on it. Great games by Athen Yuen and Ricky Clark, combined with sticking to our guns and playing a great fourth quarter (7-1 for SFU) won the game four us. For the second year in a row we took it to overtime with Oregon this year. It was a really fun crazy game with all kinds of lead changes, big hits and great plays. We had a chance to put it away with a one goal lead and only a few minutes left, but Oregon tied it up and we went into overtime. We committed a costly penalty that left us man down, and Oregon took advantage and put the game away. But certainly this one could have gone either way, and it was our first game this season being full strength so we were excited about how we played. There was one scary moment when one of our defensivemen (Reed) appeared to have hurt his neck pretty severely and was taken off in a stretcher, but after the game we went to the hospital and he walked out on his own power and will hopefully be playing again before too long. Thanks for all of your concern guys, and great game.

Oregon
Brian Platz:
Very well played/exciting game. PLU looked strong throughout, but especially the second quarter. There was a PLU injured player 8 minutes into the third quarter (neck injury), which required an ambulance (25 min. delay). Oregon tied the game with :52 seconds left in the 4th, which put it into Sudden Death overtime. PLU was penalized for a 1 minute slash about 1:35 into the overtime and Oregon scored the winning goal 1:53 into the overtime period.

Josh Barbour:
The Oregon Ducks played PLU in an extremely exciting high scoring game that saw several lead changes and heartstopping hits. PLU took an early lead, scoring the first goal a mere 7 seconds into the game. The Ducks were able to come back, by scoring several goals, and took a 4-3 lead after the first quarter. PLU played a strong second quarter, going into half time with a 10-8 lead over the Ducks. The lead changed hands once again, and after the third, it was 13-12, Oregon lead. PLU took the lead for most of the fourth, however, Doug Hamilton of Oregon was able to tie the game at 16, with less than one minute to go in the game. Josh Waldman of the Oregon Ducks scored the winning goal 1:39 into overtime.
Josh Waldman and Dave Burnette were the players of the game for the Oregon Ducks. Waldman scored an impressive 5 goals during the game, and Burnette made 2 key assists, one to Hamilton to force the OT, and one to Waldman for the win. PLU's player of the game was attackman Aaron Henderson for his impressive 5 goals.

After playing such a tough and long game with Oregon the day before, we were a bit sluggish and tired in this one. It was mostly our sharpness that suffered, and we missed a lot of shots and made some bad passes. But that is not to take anything away from Oregon State. They have a lot of strong long sticks and they rotate them in and can wear down an offense in a hurry. This game saw some lead changes and more big hits. Rookie Shaffner scored his first goal in the game at a clutch time and played great. The score was close until late in the game, but we were able to hold them off for a win. Thanks for the game guys.

The Oregon Ducks played their first away game in the 2001 season, and walked away with a 10-5 victory over Lewis and Clark. Attackman Senior Jamie Hall earned his first start of the 2001 season and scored 4 goals for the Ducks. Freshman Jim O'Neil also netted his first 2 goals of what is sure to be an impressive collegate career. The game had many penalties; Lewis and Clark's man down unit was able to keep them in the game and kept Oregon's EMO in check.
The Duck's players of the game were the 5 long sticks and goalie: Mike Zienewitz (G) Dave Bergeron (D), Randy Nellon (D), Ryan Daley (D), Chris Gaffney (LSM), and Tyler Douglas (LSM) for their tenacious defense and effective clears. Lewis and Clarks' player of the game was goaltender Colin Flynn, for his tough goal and amazing saves.

Both teams had great scoring opportunities in the first two overtime periods, but with a man-up advantage the Cougars won on Jon Morgan's goal off a Ryan Kelley assist fifteen seconds into the 3rd O.T. period. Washington Goalie Nick Pollock recorded 26 saves in the loss.
Maybe the most exciting PNCLL game ever, which a huge crowd on a warm, sunny day enjoyed to the fullest. Congrats to Wazzou for pulling this one out, and thanks for being such good Cats. Hope to see you in the Final Four.

A week after receiving a scare from Western Washington, the Simon Fraser University Men’s Lacrosse team got back on track with a convincing 29-12 victory over the University of Montana Grizzlies. The win moved the #6 Clansmen to 3-0, while Montana dropped to 1-1.
Despite freezing cold temperatures at game time, Simon Fraser came out scorching hot. Sophomore attackman Ricky Clark scored 5 first quarter goals as the Clansmen dominated the first 15 minutes, outscoring Montana by an 8-1 margin.
It was more of the same in the second quarter, as the Clan tallied 9 goals, while freshman goaltender made 9 stops en route to a 17-3 half-time lead.
The second half degenerated into a bit of a nasty affair, as both teams racked up penalties and Montana even had one player ejected for fighting. Despite all the rough stuff, SFU continued to score. Sophomore midfielder Curtis Hodgson scored 4 second half goals, while Clark and freshman midfielder Steve Kojima each had three. Montana managed to get a few goals on the scoreboard themselves, the last three with defender Aiden Ball in net replacing Johnson.
It was a record setting night for the Clan, as Ricky Clark broke Peter Morgan’s record for goals in a game (8 vs. Oregon State in 2000), scoring 9 on 14 shots. In addition, the 41 total goals scored is a record for SFU games. Clark ended up with 12 points on the night (9 goals, 3 assists), while Curtis Hodgson (7 goals), Athen Yuen (3 goals, 4 assists), Steve Kojima (5 goals, 1 assist), and Pinder Shahi (4 goals, 1 assist) all had strong games for the Clan. Matt Johnson made 21 saves in net.

We came into the game with some players out and a little distracted because of the tragedy that happened last Saturday night, but we still started strong and felt like we played pretty decent lacrosse most of the game. The second quarter really hurt us when WSU outscored us 6-1 and we just couldn't gain any ground after that. Tackitt had another great game, and Campbell scored his first goal for us of the season. Good game by WSU and good luck with your season fellas.

Whitman
Whitman came out on fire for its opening game of the 2001 season, with attackmen CJ Calvert coming up with a hat trick in the first period. Whitman was in charge of the game for most of the first half and went into the break with a 7-3 lead. However, the Missionaries came out flat in the third quarter, allowing Oregon to score two early goals and another one later on in the quarter. The intensity level for Whitman had depleted since the first half and the Ducks exploited this willingly. Whitman knew it had to hold its lead going into the fourth quarter and super-middie Ben Boynton put one in as the 3rd quarter was winding down to give Whitman an 8-6 lead going into the fourth. Doug Royer came up big in goal for Whitman, especially in the fourth, allowing only two of the countless Oregon shots to get by him. Attackmen Andy McKeever sealed the deal for Whitman with the game winning goal early in the fourth, as Whitman held on for an opening day win. Thanks to the Ducks for comin!g out and good luck the rest of the way.

Oregon
Another close game in the PNCLL; this time the Ducks wern't able to pull it out and suffered their first league loss of 2001. Whitman played a good, solid game of lacrosse. Whitman came out strong, going up on the Ducks 5-1 after the first quarter. The Ducks spent most of the second quarter in the penalty box, and Whitman ended the first half with an 7-3 lead. The Ducks came back in the thrid quarter ready to play, and shortend Whitman's lead to 8-6. Both teams played a strong forth quarter, and the game ended with Whitman winning, 9-8. Great game, boys.
The player of the game for the Ducks was their golie, Mike Zenkewitz, who came up with some amazing saves and stellar clears. Mike was able to keep the Ducks in the game with his solid play in the cage. Whitman's player of the game was attackman CJ Calvert and middie Ben Boynton. Calvert and Boynton combined for 6 goals and 4 assists for Whitman.

Great game by both teams. Both Whitman and WWU came out smoking as the score was 2-2 just four minutes into the game. Whitman dominated on the face offs and our man-up was executing well. The score was 9-6 Whitman at the half and 10-9 at the start of the fourth. Whitman scored with 5:42 remaining to go up 12-10 in the fourth, but could not hold the lead as WWU tied it up with :07 remaining on a man-up. Whitman got the ball after an illegal formation on the face off by WWU and Calvert almost won it, but his shot hit the back of the net just a split second after the whistle blew. Whitman had a chance to win it in OT but Boynton's shot hit the left pipe. WWU won it from a shot by Morgan with less than a minute left in OT. Good game WWU, we will see you in the post-season.

The first half was full of excitement as both SFU and Whitman played good lacrosse. Whitman's success on the face offs helped us a lot as it allowed us to get several unsettled situations that we were able to take advantage of. The score at the half was 10-6 SFU. Calvert scored two goals in the first minute to open up the second half and Whitman was within 2 goals at 10-8 SFU, but that was as close as Whitman would get. The Missionaries began playing sloppy and the awesome stick skills of SFU began taking their toll on Whitman. Whitman wasn't able to settle and run its offense the way it knows how in the 2nd half and our man-up wasn't running as smoothly as was necessary. Mike Yu played an awesome game in goal, his first ever game action. Yu made nearly twenty saves against SFU, several of them seemingly impossible saves. Yu surprised many of his Whitman teammates and got us excited for the future. Whitman showed SFU that it can play with them when we are able to play their game, and while SFU played a great all around game as usual and the score was lopsided, Whitman has nevertheless gained a lot of confidence as a result of this game.

The Ducks and Cougars played an exciting back and forth game last Saturday on WSU's amazing field turf. The Ducks were missing a few starters including their starting goalie, but they were able to stand strong. Back up goalie Beau Dickey (in his first ever start in goal) played an amazing game, making stellar saves and smart clears. The Ducks played a strong first half, but fell flat in the third quarter, when WSU led by 3 goals. The Ducks were able to come back quickly, and win the game 13-11.
The Ducks' player of the game was defenseman Jeff Schmid. Along with Schmid's strong defensive play and leadership on the field, Jeff also scored 3 goals and had 1 assist. The Cougars' player of the game goes to attackman Josh Saunders for his 2 goals and 1 assist.

Game no. 605 was really good. If not for Willamette's growing team Linfield would have have an easy win. However, that was not the case. With the final score being 9 to 7, Linfield Lacrosse did have to work for this victory against Willamette Lacrosse. They do have an excellent Coach, and I know that he will be worthy of a salaried position when Linfield-Corporate and all the other colleges does acknowledge the ever-growing PNCLL Programs and start funding Lacrosse outright.

The rivalry between Whitman and PLU continued being exciting on Sunday when the Missionaries came on out for a game. Whitman came out strong with four goals from Calvert and two from Boynton, but PLU answered for the most part with five goals of their own to make for a 5-6 first quarter score. Both defenses tightened down in the second and the Missionaries kept a one goal lead into halftime. But the third quarter was controlled by PLU who outscored Whitman 5-2 to take a two goal lead. In the forth quarter Whitman pulled within one, but with a man up situation Henderson drove to the goal and scored the game clinching goal. There were a lot of penalties called against both teams and it almost resulted in us losing one of our best defenders. Our goalie Forbes had another huge game and made some great saves for us. Thanks for the game Missionaries and good luck.

Oregon and Montana played in the freezing cold at WSU last Sunday. Oregon led most of the game, winning 4-0 at the end of the 3rd quarter. Montana was able to spark an incredible comeback, and scored 5 goals in the 4th quarter, but the Ducks did not give up, and they were able to net 2. With the score 6-5 (Ducks' lead) Montana had a man up opportunity with a 1:12 to play in the game. The Ducks' man down squad of Jeff Schmid, Randy Nellon, Dave Bergeron, Matt Fox, and Dominic Kan were able to hold off Montana's offense. The final score was 6-5, Oregon victory.
The Ducks' player of the game was goalie Beau Dicky. In only his second start ever in goal, Beau was able to hold Montana to a shut out in the first 3 quarters. Montana's player of the game was their goalie Patrick Lally, who came up with some strong saves, and kept Montana in the game for all 4 quarters.

Our first game against Oregon State ended with a 14-1 final score with no discrepancies. February 4, was the first game ever for 90+% of Willamette's 2001 Lacrosse Team: 18 players were brand new, and 2 did have some experience from High School. Nevertheless, on March 11, Willamette Lacrosse hosted Oregon State for their second meeting and controlled the first quarter with a 2-0 lead over the beavers. Then, Coach, Geoff Frost, did a very fine job of changing and setting the tempo of the game with a really good group of players and achieved a 9-6 victory over Willamette. Both teams enjoyed the good sportsmanship and competitive level of play. It was an excellent game.

Seven (7) minutes into the 2nd quarter, the Beavers responded with four (4) earned goals by the end of the 2nd, and held the lead against the Bearcats for the remainder of the game. It was impressive to watch the Willamette Bearcats continually scrap for the victory right to the very end. My guys did an excellent job, and did appreciate the game.

We look forward to more team success as the seasons come and go.

It was the same old story in Bellingham, WA Friday night as #22 Western Washington once again pushed #6 Simon Fraser early in the game but came up short. After Western attackman Jeff Maines tied the game at 9-9 9:28 into the second quarter, Simon Fraser outscored the Vikings 15-2 over the remainder of the game for a convincing 24-11 victory.
The Clan overcame freezing cold temperatures and came out scorching hot. Junior attackman Athen Yuen opened the scoring just 14 seconds into the game, and it was 6-2 SFU before Western got into the game.
With the score 8-4 to begin the second quarter, Western applied some heat of their own while Simon Fraser sort of fell asleep. Western midfielder Mike Morgan scored his third goal of the game on a 3 minute man-up situation 1:13 into the quarter. While the Clan was able to kill off the remainder of the penalty, Western still had the momentum, and was able to pick away at Simon Fraser’s lead, until attackman Jeff Maines tied the game at 9 with just over 5 minutes left in the half. Yet, as in previous contests, the Western run
only served as a wake up call for Simon Fraser. Attackman Ricky Clark and Athen Yuen scored goals just 20 seconds apart, and goaltender Matt Johnson shook off some early game jitters to go to the half leading 11-9.
Coach Daren Fridge had no interest in seeing a repeat of the previous
SFU/Western tilt, which saw SFU trailing the Vikings going into the fourth. He preached to the Clan a patient ball-control offense and a disciplined defense which had proved so successful early in the game. The Clan took his words to heart, and methodically took all the air out of Western’s sails. Led by Freshman attackman Pinder Shahi’s three third quarter goals, Simon Fraser took it to the Vikings to the tune of 8-1 for the quarter. The domination continued in the fourth quarter, as SFU pumped in five more goals and Johnson shut the door on Western, making 7 fourth quarter saves while
allowing just 1 goal. Final score: Simon Fraser 24, Western 11.
Pinder Shahi led the way offensively for Simon Fraser scoring 5 goals and adding 2 assists. Curtis Hodgson had 3 goals and 3 assists for 6 points, while Ricky Clark, Athen Yuen and freshman midfielder Steve Kojima all had 5 point games for the Clan. The game also marked the return of two-time USLIA All-Tournament Team member Peter Morgan. Morgan had 2 goals and 1 assist and played a key role in his first game back since finishing his commitments with the Simon Fraser Men’s basketball team.

The Dawgs squandered a four-goal, first quarter lead. SCU outcoached and outplayed UW in the second half, but Goalie Nick Pollock kept us in it throughout as usual. Thanks for the game, Broncos, and hope we see you next year in Seattle for a rematch. Good luck in the WCLL playoffs.

After the exciting win last week for some reason we weren't able to put it all together again this weekend. We had a four goal lead at one point on the Pioneers, but they are fighters and they rattled off eight goals in a row from the middle of the third on. We just fell flat and weren't able to convert on what has to be close to a record amount of penalties for Lewis and Clark. We have to give a lot of credit to them for playing so hard with such small numbers, and having talented long sticks scoring goals. Good job guys and good luck.
