Washington Oregon Old Farts

Compete in '99 Vail Lax Shootout

The Washington Oregon Old Farts SuperMasters team had a memorable experience in their inaugural showing at the Vail Lacrosse Shootout. The team, comprised of crusty players from Washington, Oregon, Canada, California, Colorado and an English transplant now living in Connecticut, finished 1-3 in tournament play. Despite the fact that we had a higher age per player ratio and that we had to play 4 games while the other teams played only 3 games we felt we were competitive against every team we played. Our last game against a Holy Cross alumni team from the Baltimore area was a real heartbreak as they scored two garbage goals that gave them a 9-7 victory. We did have one secret weapon in our favor. Oxygen! We were the only team that brought oxygen tanks to the tourney and we made good use of it at 8000 feet. Two of our teammates, Kris Snider (Attack-Seattle) and Buddy Joseph (Defense-Canada) made the SuperMasters All-Star team. Dennis Joseph (Goalie-Canada) anchored a strong defense and made incredible save after incredible save. Wally Thomas (Midfield-Seattle) and Doug Brown (Midfield-California) were stellar on faceoffs and clearly won the majority of their faces. Sam Seward had the goal of the tourney with a beautiful box-style fake shot that faked everyone out and made us all wish we had a big screen instant replay. The WOOFs takes its hats off to our oldest warriors, Geoffrey Clarke (Midfield-Connecticut), Ned Brittain (Defense-Oregon) and the forever-crafty Tom Foster (Attack-Oregon). Thanks to all those who played for the WOOFs (several with injuries) and to those who worked so hard to put this great trip together. Everyone on the team had an incredible time both on and off the field, we all made new friends and vowed to return for the 2000 tourney.
