National Women's Tourney Results

Results from the National Tournament. The team played great, ending up 5-1 with the loss to South (by one goal) who ended up winning the division. I would encourage everyone to think about trying out next year - we'd like to send at least two teams (one in Division 4 and perhaps one in Division 2?). All in all a great tournament! It was even better to have a well-mixed team representing a true cross-section of the Northwest. Everyone played very well together, especially considering we never fully practiced as a team. The greatest indication of the success of the weekend was that no one person, but all players, stood out over the course of the weekend. Great job everyone!!! Next year - total victory is ours!    Julie Bennani

Game Summaries:

Colorado (Won 3-1)

A lot of history exists between the Northwest and Colorado; most recently Colorado suffered two major defeats at the hands of NW club teams. Tensions were high and the game proved to be a defensive struggle as neither goalie was willing to let a cheap one past them. Jennifer (our goalie) was a superstar with at least 11 excellent saves, many coming off of free positions. Miki Kondo scored the first goal by driving and scoring in the upper right hand corner on Colorado's ex-World Cup goalie. Heather Roffey kicked into high gear off a midfield pass and flew past the defense to score the second goal in fine style. Julia Veghte sealed the victory with a great pickup of a loose groundball around the crease - whipping it past the goalie before she could adjust. A fine start to the weekend!

South (Lost 8-9)

There is also some history in this arena as the Northwest team defeated South two years ago to win Division III. The Northwest came out fast and furious with two quick goals to start the game. However, South obtained the momentum using quick wheels and aggressive tracking of ground balls to take the lead at halftime 4-5. The Northwest came out fast again in the beginning of the second half scoring 4 unanswered goals (including nice shots by Emily and Samantha), but the humidity began to take its toll and South prevailed in the end with an onslaught of speed and some luck. The go-ahead goal was scored by South on settled attack by a nice feed to a middle cutter with under one minute remaining. A tough loss and a good argument for always allowing playoffs in a tightly contested division.

Southern California (Won 13-1)

In a rematch of numerous past tournaments, the Northwest met Southern California early on a hot and humid Sunday morning. The Northwest dominated from the get go - gaining possession of every loose ball and definitively shutting down the Southern Cal offense. Highlights included goals by the defense - first, Patti Favero (point) sprinted out for an outlet pass and proceeded to gallop through the entire offensive end of the field uncontested for the shot. An especially nice touch on this goal was the jump and jig Patti performed after scoring! In another change of roles, defense wing Jeannette Wake intercepted a transition pass at the 20 yard line and turned on the burners to score before California could adjust. A fine dominating performance by the Northwest as the team began to really gel.

Philadelphia (Won 11-5)

Following an inspiring exhibition game by the U.S. squad team, the team came out with fire against an overmatched Philly team. Feeding the flame were Jen Brown's astonishing five goals. Amy Alvord also exhibited enflamed enthusiasm and scored a couple beautiful goals and made some nice assists throughout the game. The heat intensified as the sun ignited player tempers - a few yellow cards were received by both squads. However, Northwest proved to be the cooler heads in this battle - the score is a bit misleading as the game was not quite that close (3 junk goals were included in the 5). All in all a satisfying victory.

New England (Won 7-2)

The final day of the tournament started off with a tight victory over New England. Transition defense proved to be critical in this game and the midfield stepped up to the task. With Maggie and Julie increasing the defensive pressure and assisting in moving the ball downfield, the offense had numerous opportunities to take shots on goal. After sustaining a large lump on the forehead from a hard check, Juliet Baker charged back into the game with some amazingly acrobatic maneuvers including scoring 2 goals as she fell to the ground, running over a small precipice for a loose ball, and making a fantastic sliding catch at midfield. A solid game from the entire team - setting up a good tone for the final game.

Central (Won 9-2)

The culmination of the successful weekend came with the matchup against the Central (New York) club. Both teams took a little bit to get into the game after a fast and furious weekend. Andrea Schatz broke the stalemate, overcoming a hamstring pull to put one in the upper corner. Julia Veghte then kicked into high gear and carried the offense for the rest of the first half, scoring three goals after weaving through their defense. At halftime the score was 4-2. After a quick pep talk and a lot of water, the Northwest team came out with a bit more zing and began to dominate possession of the ball. Newby (Carol Noonan) was a constant presence in the midfield, making stellar cuts to the ball to help make the transition from offense to defense. Julia, Jen Brown and Juliet continued their scoring ways and by the end of the game, a solid lead was established and Central was out of gas.
