Redhook Places 5th in South Lake Tahoe Lax Tournament

Labor Day Weekend: A group of the NW's finest competed in the second annual Sierra Nevada invitational tournament in South Lake Tahoe. The tournament hosted 12 teams, 7 from California, and one from NY, Utah, Tahoe, Texas and Seattle. The Seattle team, sponsored by Redhook Brewery, finished a respectable 5th, going 3-2. San Francisco won the championship by beating Marin 12-10.
This was a great tournament. The location, weather and tourney spirit were perfect. The level of play was PNLA "A" caliber. If we had brought a few more players (we only took 10  we could have easily won this event. We will definitely bring a team again next year.
Redhook highlights:
  • Joe O'Donnell was the team MVP and easily the best goalie in the tourney
  • Scott Bissell scored a great goal in OT to win game 4
  • Matt Sauri had a hat trick against Palo Alto
  • Adam Burker played solid "D" all tourney
  • Matt Cone lead the team with 5 goals for the tourney

Game Recaps:
Game One: Marin 6 – Redhook 4
This was a really well played game. Being our first, and playing the PNLA Champs (ok it wasn’t exactly the same Marin team, but they were very good) we were a little surprised how well we played together. We were tied 3-3 at half, and were only down 5-4 with less than a minute to go. Joe played awesome in goal and kept us in the game. Matt Cone should have had a goal at the end, but hit the goalie in the chest as he was falling down.
Goals:
  • Matt Cone - 2
  • Richard Barton – 1
  • Matt Bilken – 1
Game Two: Red Hook 10 - Palo Alto 6
After building up confidence in the first game of the day versus Marin, Redhook came out smokin’ and beat a deep Palo Alto team (they had 20+ guys to our 13). We went up 5-1 early and never looked back. Matt Sauri had a hat trick, and Joe stopped a number of weak shots.
Goals:
  • Matt Sauri - 3
  • Rich Barton – 2
  • Matt Smith –2
  • Matt Belkin – 1
  • Matt Cone 1
  • Bryan Curtis – 1
Game Three: The Clinic 6 - Redhook 5
This one was a heart breaker. We were seeded number one in the consolation bracket after day one play, and this loss knocked us out of contention for the little trophy. We were up 5-1 in the beginning of the 4th and blew it, they scored with 30 seconds left to prevent OT. The Clinic was a solid team from San Fran that had a number of quality players. Although we lost, this was probably our best game.
Goals:
  • Burke Culligan – 2
  • Matt Cone - 1
  • Marc Bissell - 1
  • Richard Barnett - 1
Game Four: Redhook 6 – Olympic Club 5 (OT)
The Olympic Club (NY) had troubles fielding a team, so they recruited a bunch of players from The Clinic to play for them. This gave us added motivation as we had just lost to them that morning. This was a back and forth game. Marc Bissell scored a pretty goal in the third which had the fans jumping, a high heat riser from the line. The star Clinic player scored with 20 seconds left to force the game to OT. Scott Bissell scored off a nice face dodge to win the game 3 minutes into the OT period. Joe as usual played huge! Dave Vannoy realized he is not as young nor fast as he used to be at midfield so he played solid at attack.
Goals:
  • Scott Bissell - 2
  • Marc Bissell - 2
  • Matt Cone – 1
  • Bryan Curtis – 1
Game Five: Redhook won by forfeit over Alcatraz
After the nice OT win over the Olympic Club we were pumped to play one more game Monday morning versus a solid Alcatraz team. The losers blew us off. They left to beat the traffic back to San Fran. To pass the time Dave Vannoy organized the first annual Redhook Tahoe Golf Tournament which featured some of the worst golf ever played in the state. The event was held at the Bijou Municipal Golf Course, home of the annual Hacker Classic. Rich Barnett won the event scoring a 40 on the 9 hole course. Scott Bissell won honorable mention with his high score of 108! Although we plan on playing in the Lax tourney again next year, we will likely need to find another course to hold the golf outing. I doubt they will let us play there again, after losing some of their rental clubs, drinking a case of old Milwaukee that we snuck on and placing a record number of divots. Complete golf scores for the par 32 course:
  • Rich Barnett – 40 (Champion)
  • Joe O’Donnell - 43
  • Dave Vannoy - 44
  • Adam Burker - 46
  • Matt Cone - 47
  • Marc Bissell - 68
  • Scott Bissell – 108 (Honorable Mention)
