August 17,
2002: In the Fall of 2001, Christian Folk a
teacher at Spring Street School in Friday Harbor,
contacted the Washington Chapter of US Lacrosse
inquiring about starting a new boys lacrosse team at
his small private school of 80 students. The US
Lacrosse chapter, eager to help, donated a dozen
sticks and a goal, and provided training to help the
team get started.
The Spring Street Dragons competed in 5 WA State JV
games during the 2002 season with a limited squad of
12 dedicated players. The entire Spring Street
School community got behind the program and are now
very committed to seeing the program flourish and
ultimately compete in the WA HS Varsity League.
The community is also interested in starting a girls
team for the upcoming season.
To further support the growth of the program, this
past weekend, Matt Cone and Stephanie Cone, members
of the board of WA Chapter of US Lacrosse conducted
two-day clinics for boys and girls of the Spring
Street teams. The clinics were well attended and
publicized on the San Juan Island with coverage in
the local newspaper.
Brendan Cowan, asst coach of the team organized the
clinics and hosted the Cone's in what was a great
weekend! Lacrosse is definitely here to stay on San
Juan Island!
